Show moreThe purpose of this project is to show how a team committed to helping people help save the world can leapfrog today's best designs. As opposed to the tradition of minimum design standards that just meeting the building code, highest practical design standards are the focus. True sustainability is the goal of this project, including; Zero Carbon Emissions, Net Zero Energy, 100% Solar Power, 10 times the traditional design life, 1/10th the maintenance, rot proof, termite proof, fire proof, hurricane and earthquake resistant. The project team, using cutting edge technology, will develop all aspects of a start-up design and build company to promote High Performance Green Homes. This project will provide a great opportunity for IIT students to experience a challenging and interesting project and to significantly contribute to a better world.

Show morePotential power plant sites can become more difficult to determine if water is not available in great quantity. This is true in western states where it may be scarce and competed for by other industries as well as households. The aim of this project is to find an economical, as well as environmentally friendly way to recover water from the flue gas, which is produced when powder-river-basin (PRB) coal is burned in a 750 MW power plant.

Show moreProspective and longitudinal studies have demonstrated that rumination has a negative effect on mood and depression outcomes. The present study examined whether the type of flexible cognitive style needed to reevaluate maladaptive thoughts and interpretations (i.e. cognitive flexibility) acts as a buffer against the negative relationship between rumination and affect. Participants (N = 100) completed anonymous online surveys containing two measures of cognitive flexibility, including the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS; Beck et al., 2008) and the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI; Dennis & Vander Wal, 2010), as well as measures of depressive rumination and trait affect. Multiple regression-based moderation analyses showed that the tendency to be more objective, reflective, and open to feedback moderated the relationship between rumination and positive affect (PA), such that the negative relationship between rumination and PA was attenuated for individuals who were more self-reflective. We discuss the implications of this buffering effect for theories of rumination and research on protective factors, as well as its relevance to psychotherapy. A comparison of the cognitive flexibility questionnaires revealed differences in how flexible reinterpretation is measured and identified selective relationships to positive and negative affect. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations for future research on cognitive styles that promote flexible reinterpretation.

Show moreEfficiency in parking facilities has been set to low standards since self-parking was introduced in the 1950s1. As technology has developed, parking has been left in the past. Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National

Show more1. Determine the amount of force to cut 6, 8, 10 sheets of 20 lb paper, taking into account the width and length of the shred. Once the amount of force is determined, develop a computer simulation model that can predict the amount of force required based upon the following variable inputs: number of sheets, shred width, and shred length. 2. Through computer simulation or prototype development, design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size based upon data obtained from previous semester’s data. The goal is to develop and simulate a gear train that can withstand 500 cycles at maximum sheet capacity. 3. Develop acoustical sound dampeners or “tune” the shredder to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process, leveraging information obtained from previous semesters’ data. The goal is to reduce the noise output by 10 decibels

Show moreThe IPRO 338 task is to continue from past IPRO efforts in developing business strategies for electrical contractors through the use Building Informational Modeling (BIM). While past IPROs have focused on the efficiency and benefits of BIM for electrical contracting companies. Our teams focus will be on how the benefits of using these new technologies and other business development strategies can help guide electrical contractors towards improving and increasing their overall business endeavors in a recessional and competitive environment. We plan on concluding our project with a business development module presenting key successful marketing strategies. The developed deliverable is geared towards assisting members of our sponsoring Electrical Contracting Association (ECA).

Show moreThe Beam Energy Scan Program is launched by RHIC to study the QCD phase diagram. The goal is to explore the possible QCD phase boundary and search for possible QCD critical point. In 2010 and 2011, experiments collected data at √sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39 and 62.4 GeV, covering a wide range of baryon chemical potential from μB 420 to 70 MeV. In this presentation, we will report some latest results of the Beam Energy Scan Program from the STAR collaboration.

Show moreLow cost imaging radar systems are an emerging field today with very useful applications in automotive, healthcare and entertainment industries. The aim is to realize an effective and reliable radar system that has a good resolution and at the same time a low cost and complexity. The S-MFCW radar technique has been shown to achieve comparable resolution with the FMCW technique while at the same time maintaining the advantages of reduced hardware complexity and low power consumption. This makes the S-MFCW technique very useful in low cost and low complexity user end devices. The aim of this thesis is to develop a S-MFCW radar system that is capable of measuring distance of an object as well as its velocity. The radar system was implemented using two different approaches – a modular approach and an integrated approach. Both the implementations were tested and the results were found to be in line with expectations from previous research work.

Show moreIPRO346 will focus on familiarizing itself with British Petroleum’s (BP) wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for its oil refinery in Whiting, IN. Specifically, this IPRO will analyze the current permits and their stipulations regarding the amount of ammonia and total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater being dumped in Lake Michigan. Ultimately, possible methods and designs will be devised to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS remaining in treated wastewater. These designs will take the form of a process flow sheet with a computer simulation to model the designs. At the culmination of this IPRO we will have several different models for possible upgrades to the Whiting refinery wastewater treatment plant to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS in the wastewater entering Lake Michigan as well as a cost to implement each solution.

Show moreDue to errors on construction sites it is not uncommon for underground utilities to be struck accidentally while digging. Aside from the obvious monetary damages a significant number of people have died as a result of these types of accidents. The purpose of this EnPRO is to aid workers when they are in danger of striking an underground utility by successfully developing a software product that displays subterranean utilities to the workers. The end result being that the number of accidents decreases, saving both lives and money.

Show moreThe objective of this project is the design and cost estimation for various pollution control devices that can remove volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) from ground water. Effective and efficient treatment methods are needed to meet this clean up challenge. Full-scale performance and cost data that minimizes energy requirements and documents the costs associated with design, construction, and operation will be required. Integration of various technologies and the application of unit operations involving adsorption, absorption, and biological reactor systems will be addressed. The need to address present and future environmental emission standards will be integrated into the design procedures. The design process will be part of a general evaluation of emission standards required for the control and removal of hazardous waste.
