Show moreSpallation neutrons produced from cosmic ray muons are a major source of backgrounds in underground physics experiments. Experiments have been done to study spallation neutron production and yield, but our understanding of these processes is still limited. There are various interactions that can produce spallation neutrons. Most of these production mechanisms are fairly well understood; much of the uncertainty in our understanding of spallation neutrons lies in mechanisms such as virtual photon exchange and the assumptions used to calculate the photonuclear cross section. Even the experiments that have been carried out do not agree with each other or theoretical calculations. Spallation neutron production mechanisms are discussed, as well as a new experiment to study spallation neutrons. The impact of this study on current and future underground physics experiments is also explored.

Show moreThe goal of this project is to develop algorithms to be used in a virtual simulation of a garage door’s operation and to construct a working prototype that functions in the Thermotron environmental test chamber in The Chamberlain Group, Inc. facility in Elmhurst in order to collect data under a range of temperatures and humidity as well as a range of loading conditions. The simulator had to be made to fit as many of the operators under test as possible inside the limited size Thermotron that is not large enough to take the operator and a full garage door.

Show moreThe integration of a supervisory knowledge-based system (KBS) with a multivariable control system is examined to provide robust multivariable control of a chemical reaction process. The supervisory KBS is capable of monitoring the process to detect system faults as well as assessing control system performance. If a control system performance deficiency is detected, the KBS formulates and implements the necessary corrective controller tuning. This adaptive capability reduces the conservatism of the robust control system. The underlying mechanisms are discussed and the re-tuning ability of the KBS is illustrated by using rigorous simulations of a chemical reaction process

Show moreThe first and primary objective of IPRO 317 is to continue advancing the existing prototype towards full flight worthiness. This will be achieved through several overhauls of existing parts, as well as through consultation with outside experts in the radio control field. The team will also implement many new safety features as the prototype progresses toward the ultimate goal of free flight. The second objective of this semester’s IPRO 317 is to pick up where the previous semester left off on the construction of a second prototype design. Many parts have been ordered and are awaiting assembly; however several others must be developed and fabricated. The end result of this objective will produce a second viable alternative vehicle for use in marketing the idea of a VTOL aircraft to the public. The final objective of IPRO 317 is to review and analyze the results of previous semesters regarding the objectives, design goals, and feasibility of a full-scale prototype, including any existing models. Once the design goals of the aircraft are made firm a new model will be created from parts available on the current market.

The growing problems regarding the traditional methods of agriculture, and the rate of growth of the world population, the team plans to design a method to grow food more efficiently and economically in urban areas. Through this research the team will gain a basic understanding of the workings behind nanotechnology and determine applications which may interest our target audience (see second objective). The second objective of IPRO 341 is to determine a target audience. Since this semester’s team will focus on public assessment and education, a target audience must be chosen to present our research findings to. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to assess the current level of knowledge which the target audience has pertaining to nanotechnology. By determining what the audience already knows about the subject the team can organize and present the necessary information. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to educate our target audience. Public education of nanotechnology and its applications is the mission of this IPRO team. All previous objectives are part of this encompassing goal of public education. The team will work on putting together a tool for public education which can be used by the target audience to gain knowledge on the subject of nanotechnology. The team also plans to spread interest of the tool so that it may be used to educate the public.

Show moreWe have quite a few objectives for this IPRO. Our first objective is to research into both industrial and mass market applications of the Product Animations technology. After this first objective, we take 2 paths. The first leads to determining a screening criterion to select the best industrial prospects. We then plan to quantify the value propositions for the prospects selected from objective 2. When this is finished, we will create a deliverable simulation example, and finally write down any and all recommendations for future work with this IPRO. The other path leads to researching the idea or design of an ASP website. After this has been implemented, we want to use a PAI example of a milkshake machine, and show this on the ASP at IPRO day.
