Show moreSpring semester 2007, the Manhattan Group came to IIT seeking advice regarding the improvement of their paper shredder. The paper shredders are manufactured in China and sold across the world, including the United States, under the Royal brand name. Each year, over a million paper shredders are sold. Consumers want paper shredders that are quiet and long lasting and are available at the lowest possible price. The Manhattan Group has asked us once again, the students of IPRO 321 and Professor Maurer, for the fourth straight semester to seek potential methods and problems in their shredder. These include improving the sound reduction, the gear optimization, and other features. The MMAE lab and machine lab will be used extensively for gear, sound, and material testing and design. Software resources, sound measuring equipment, and EE equipment will be used as well. Potential legal and/or ethical issues will involve patents and idea ownership. Since this a sponsored IPRO, all discoveries will be property of Mr. Seth Lewis and the Manhattan Group. This potentially could be an issue where this IPRO will be unable to provide necessary information to the IPRO office regarding work and progress due to ethics.

The device can be accommodated on a single chip and can be reprogrammed to accommodate index structures of different lengths and support varied posting-list sizes and varied term list sizes, thus sustaining high reusability and efficiency for a single device. The device can be used either as an internal slave component or as an external co-processor. The device controllers are efficient in resource demands and take only a minimal percentage of the logic and memory space of the hardware device.

Show moreTwo-dimensional angular correlation data from the STAR experiment at RHIC and from the LHC experiments provide critical information about dynamical processes in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The principal correlation structures of interest are a broad jet-related peak at small relative azimuth (φ) extending to large relative pseudorapidity (η), the dijet ridge at large relative azimuth, and an independent double ridge on φ represented by a quadrupole function. The broad peak at small relative azimuth has been attributed, in large part, to initial-state fluctuations and hydrodynamic flow which produce higher-order harmonics on φ. That conjecture is challenged in this paper. It is shown that the net effect of additional higher harmonic model elements is to describe small, non-Gaussian (NG) shapes in the broad jet-related peak. The quadrupole correlation, which is also conventionally attributed to hydrodynamic flow, is considered within the Balitsky - Fadin - Kuraev - Lipatov (BFKL) Pomeron framework. Preliminary results using this model for the quadrupole correlation for particle production from 200 GeV p + p collisions are shown to be consistent with recent data from STAR.

Show moreThe IPRO is pending to be sponsored by ComEd in order to research possible methods of energy conservation. The focus of this project is to design a system that encourages energy conserving behavior in residents by use of an interface that displays real time energy use of a residence. For this system to encourage conservation on a significant scale it is necessary that it can be installed in both new and existing buildings. The interface needs to give detailed enough data about the building’s energy consumption for the user to make well informed decisions of how to save energy, but at the same time the data must be presented in an easy to understand format. Also, the unit or units that provide the data must be accessible enough so that the user can at any time be aware of the impact that activating a certain device will have on energy consumption in their home.

Show moreIPRO 313 Advanced Systems Applied to Student Loan Rehabilitation Processes worked with the IPRO sponsor Financial Management Systems Company (FMS) to to design and build a student loan rehabilitation tool. FMS is primarily a collections company that is growing rapidly. Each year FMS receives accounts from private and government agencies and must collect from those accounts in order to receive a commission, their payment. The IPRO team had met with the sponsor many times over the course of the semester to gather requirements, map and layout FMS’ process model and in general have a better understanding of what FMS does. The team needed a better understanding of the problem and what the problem meant for FMS. FMS is in need of a tool that is able to track accounts over the course of their loan rehabilitation program quickly and effectively allow the tracking of trends over a period of time.

Show moreThe plan for this IPRO is to develop a design for a large scale parking garage that can accommodate about 500 cars. The objective of this project is to develop a design that goes beyond the standard parking systems used today. Rather, the attempt is to have a design which is more representative of “parking garages of future.” And as such, such features as quick handling of incoming and outgoing cars, efficiency in storage and aesthetics are considered in design. The building will be completely self-sufficient and will have to incorporate the architecture of the various buildings on campus. The design could have separate entrance and exit ramp towers, ramps incorporated with parking, or the futuristic design may be automated. An automated system will include a vehicle elevator of lift system to move the vehicle so the driver does not have to. The structure could be built with reinforced concrete or steel. The design will also include accessibility following the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Show moreIPRO 332’s objective is to develop the groundwork for a tool, to be implemented either in Chicago Public School classrooms or community centers, which will deliver balanced, non-biased information to its constituents about energy issues that affect their daily lives. We seek to do this, firstly, by familiarizing ourselves with the most pressing energy issues, identifying knowledge deficits concerning these issues, and selecting areas around which our concentrated effort will be most productive. Second, we will be studying current teaching methodologies and technologies in order to ensure our tool is as effective as possible. And, finally, we will identify companies, agencies and organizations currently working to deliver energy information, and learn from their expertise and experience. Through this research, we hope to learn from those currently endeavoring to spread fact-based information about energy, while developing a program of our own that ascribes to the requirements of the Chicago Public Schools’ Curriculum guidelines.
