Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities. Three major projects currently hold latent potential for the school: the communications center, the sustainability wall, and the overall greening of the facilities. If these projects are completed correctly, they will become a catalyst for positive change. We are proposing to create a transition from library to communication center because of its isolated state in the school. The sustainability wall is two-fold in terms of benefit. It will upgrade the current windows which are lacking and will create an interesting learning tool. Greening of the entire school is the third project and includes windows, roofing, etc. to improve efficiency. Through the use of all three proposals, IPRO 314 believes in the school promotion and what enrollment it could bring.

Show moreThe present IPRO is a continuing research based on the findings of the previous semester during which they concluded that planned maintenances in a coal fired plant are carried out by ‘Engineering Specialists’ and the ‘Operations Manager” whereas unplanned outages are taken care of by the ‘Shift Supervisor’ . These findings lead us to our primary goals, namely: • To conduct a “Day-in-the-Life” study for both the two categories of personnel described above by direct solicitation of information from plant personnel. • Develop methods to gather this information such as surveys and/or interviews. • Compile the gathered data into a comprehensive report which should benefit the sponsor in better understanding their potential users.

Show moreWe simulate the 3D O(1) (Ising) and O(4) spin models by the Monte Carlo method. Interesting high-order cumulants from the 3D Ising and O(4) universality classes are presented and discussed. They all show the non-monotonic or sign change behavior. The critical behavior is instructive to that of the high-order cumulants of the net baryon number in the QCD phase transitions. Maybe it’s difficult to distinguish the universality classes by the high-order cumulants in the heavy ion collisions.

Show moreThe purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan.

Show moreRenewable energy is one of the most important and widely researched topics today. It is classically defined as any form of energy that comes from renewable sources and, for all practical purposes, cannot be depleted. This may include solar, wind, or geothermal power, as well as biomass or biofuels. When considering biomass, or any living or recently dead biological material, the chemical energy of the molecules is generally collected through the process of combustion.

Show moreThis EnPRO project is the first of several designed to position IIT for a competitive proposal entry in 2009 for the Solar Decathlon 2011 competition. The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design. This year the event will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. October 12 - 20. The team houses are open for touring everyday except Wednesday, October 17, when they will close for competition purposes. An overall winner is announced on Friday, October 19 at 2 p.m. Teams of college students design a solar house, knowing from the outset that it must be powered entirely by the sun. In a quest to stretch every last watt of electricity that's generated by the solar panels on their roofs, the students absorb the lesson that energy is a precious commodity. They strive to innovate, using high-tech materials and design elements in ingenious ways. Along the way, the students learn how to raise funds and communicate about team activities. They collect supplies and talk to contractors. They build their solar houses, learning as they go. The 20 teams transport their solar houses to the competition site on the National Mall and virtually rebuild them in the solar village. Teams assemble their houses, and then the active phase of the Solar Decathlon begins with an opening ceremony for students, media, and invited guests. The teams compete in contests, and even though this part of the Solar Decathlon gets the most attention, the students really win the competition through the many months of fundraising, planning, designing, analyzing, redesigning, and finally building and improving their homes. The public is invited to tour the solar homes and event exhibits during much of the competition.

Show moreThis paper examines instability mode switching in various supersonic jet configurations that involve resonant acoustics. Resonant acoustics includes situations where flow instabilities are enhanced by feedback. The pressure spectra in such situations are rich in multiple modes, and mode switching can occur rather unpredictably. Our experiments reveal that mode switching and the number of nonlinear interactions are interconnected and this number increases just prior to a mode switch. We quantified nonlinear interactions by counting the number of such interactions occurring over a threshold level in the nonlinear cross-bicoherence spectrum and confirmed that nonlinear interactions are precursors to mode jumps. Further, this result was found to be independent of the threshold level. Moreover, if more than one instability mode coexisted, the decay of one and the persistence of the other caused a similar increase in nonlinearities. On the other hand, if there was no mode switch, the nonlinearities remained at comparable limits over the entire operating range. The latter part of the work focused on why difference interactions significantly outnumbered sum interactions in the spectra of shock-containing resonant flows. Using linear stability calculations it is shown that most of the difference interactions that occurred had a positive spatial growth rate and were, hence, unstable. In contrast, a majority of the sum interactions lay outside the amplified region which indicated that they tend to decay spatially. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Show moreAlternaria alternata, a clinically significant mold species is associated with allergic disease and asthma. An indoor growth of A. alternata may initiate atopic symptoms, accumulate in dusts, and discolor and deteriorate indoor building materials. Environmental control should be the initial approach to maintain a healthy indoor environment and manage allergic diseases. The current thesis investigated indoor dusts from various environments for mold spores and Alt a 1. Laboratory studies were carried out to determine if or which commercially available mold-resistant treatments and building materials could efficiently decrease A. alternata growth and Alt a 1. The mycoflora of indoor dusts was microscopically examined and the clinically significant allergen from A. alternata, Alt a 1 was measured in sampled dusts using a monoclonal anti-recombinant Alt a 1 (rAlt a 1) enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA). To investigate building material susceptibility untreated, mildew-resistant painted, and commercially available biocide treated building materials were inoculated with A. alternata spores, incubated in a humidity controlled chamber, and compared for mold growth and the presence of Alt a 1. A photo-monitoring technique was used to survey and determine mold growth surface area coverage. Alt a 1 immuno-reactivity of superficial mold growths was analyzed with the ELISA. The microscopic speciation of mold spores indicated that a diverse mycoflora can be found in indoor dusts. Although A. alternata was found in low concentrations in a few samples, Alt a 1was below the limit of detection. Nevertheless, mold spores can significantly contribute to the complexity of indoor dusts. A. alternata grew on all tested building materials but both painted and treated building materials inhibited mold growth in comparison to untreated samples. Not all material surfaces contained detectable levels of Alt a 1. Comparisons between untreated and painted building material groups indicated that a significant difference between the Alt a 1 accumulation content could not be established. To establish a standard sampling protocol and reliable prevention methods for mold contamination and exposure more knowledge about indoor molds must be gained.

Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. As a result, there is need for efficient routing of trains throughout the Chicago area. One aspect of railroad transport that directly affects the overall efficiency of the rail system is how easily accessible train intermodal yards are for trucks going to and through the intermodal yards. With this in mind, the overall purpose and objective of IPRO 307 is to improve the truck flow in and around an intermodal facility at Harvey, IL which is owned by Canadian National (CN) lines. CN is one of the six major railroads that serve the Chicago area. The intermodal facility at Harvey is surrounded by a network of highways including Interstates 80, 57, 294, 94 and 65. Interstates 294 and 80 cross directly overhead of the intermodal yard. In order to make truck flow around the intermodal yard more efficient, IPRO 307 will look into the addition of ramps and frontage roads, including a ramp that would be based off of interstates 80/294. A ramp connecting the major interstate to the intermodal facility would allow for easier access to the intermodal facility by trucks, thereby bettering the efficiency of the intermodal facility as a whole.
