Show moreThe IPRO program at IIT, since its inception in 1995, has become a signature program of the school for it not only benefits participating students but also the corresponding sponsors and prospective employers of IIT graduates. During a student’s participation of an IPRO, he/she is engaged in a multi-discipline, teambased learning environment to solve a real-world problem proposed by industry sponsors and/or IIT faculty. Additionally, the program is designed to allow students to develop and apply their teamwork, project management, communication, and ethical behavioral skills. Each semester, the projects courses offered change depending on the emerging social and technological trends in today’s world.

Show moreFinkl is an industrial steel manufacturer of custom, high quality steel parts for other industries (stamp molding for auto, aircraft landing gear, die steel for other manufactures, etc) The company performs the entire process from smelting the steel, casting and forging, heat treating, and machining of their parts. Currently in their heat treatment process at Finkl, approximately 10% of their parts that are below company quality standards. Finkl has no efficient way of tracking where specific parts are in relation to each other while in the furnace. So when a part comes out below standards, it is hard to trace back where that part was in the furnace and why it was not treated properly. Finkl has enlisted the help of IIT students, which plan to implement a software program that Finkl can use to create a virtual furnace with the parts that will be heat treated and their specific locations in the furnace. When parts come out below quality standards, the program would allow Finkl to examine the location of the parts within the furnace and determine the reason for sub-par quality. The previous semester IPRO was able to develop a software program that displayed the different Finkl shapes; however, the program only displays a single shape at a time without the ability to move or resize the shape. They were also able to model about half of the Finkl shape codes in ProE. . When a large number of parts fail, they must be retreated to meet company quality standards. Taking the time to retreat the process takes both time and money away from the company. If we can help to identify the cause of the heat treatment failure, this would save the company a large amount of money each year. To be able to determine the cause of the heat treat failure, the team hopes to develop a visual database of the furnace layout to help track parts location within the furnace.

Show moreThe world energy market is rapidly approaching a crossroads. As fossil fuel resources become sparser and fuel prices skyrocket, everyone is looking for the next best energy source. But not only does it need to be affordable, it also has to be safer for the environment and sustainable. There are many options being looked at including solar, wind and fuel cells, but there is one alternative that seems feasible in the immediate future: biodiesel.

- We would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced processing of signals from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released this spring. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage (Semester Unknown) IPRO 325: Developing Affordable and Sustainable Energy Solutions for the World’s Rural Poor IPRO 325 Final PresentationB F08

Show moreAn estimated 2.7 million people die prematurely each year due to smoke and toxic emissions from wood burning. Around 3.1 million people died in 2002 as a result of diarrhea related diseases which are contracted from polluted water; 90% of whom were children. Out of 792 million people suffering from malnutrition, 5 million children die each year. 4 out of 5 of these 792 million people do not have access to needed fruits and vegetables. For the past four semesters, IPRO 325 has focused on helping solve problems of the world’s rural poor. This semester, the team is focused on improving last semester’s designs and developing better field manuals. Our team implemented our past projects in Sincape, Peru last semester, and we also intend to go back to look at them after a semester and implement more of our projects.

- Title
This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage (Semester Unknown) IPRO 325: Developing Affordable and Sustainable Energy Solutions for the World’s Rural Poor IPRO 325 MidTerm PresentationB F08
