Show moreThe purpose of IPRO 351 is to research and develop a device that will be a non- invasive blood alcohol concentration (BAC) meter. Our mission is to provide a safe and accurate BAC device that will help reduce the amount of people who drive while impaired. IPRO 351 has a vision of having a non-invasive biometric blood alcohol ignition interlock device (BBAIID) that can be installed on any vehicle.

Show moreThe project will be a continuing multi-semester development. The first semester will be a period where the students and faculty decide which route to take, research the feasibility, research old or create new designs, structure a plan, and set up the contacts necessary to achieve one or more of the following: (1) Plan and design a clinic, (2) Plan and design a school, (3) Research problems and difficulties that current relief organizations have been encountering and develop viable solutions, (4) plan and design (and build?) cost-effective homes in collaboration with other universities (e.g. University of Houston).

Show moreThe Communication Design Workshop is an IPRO and is cross-listed with this main campus program. The sponsor is Pace, a successful and forward looking suburban Chicago bus company serving a six county market the size of Rhode Island. The focus of the workshop is to identify factors that will help Pace retain riders. Retention is a significant issue as it has direct financial implications and Pace does not know why they lose riders. Communication issues may be part of the retention problem. Pace will share existing research with us — we will extend and supplement this work.

Show moreIPRO 342 aims to create a workable test bed for a hybrid electric school bus. The initial work will include the planning and design of the test bed (carried out this semester), followed by the implementation and testing of the test bed (most of which will be carried out next semester). The goal will be to create a scaled model of the bus with correctly modeled electrical and mechanical systems. A parallel HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system with a permanent magnet electric motor will be used, and research by previous student teams will be utilized and expanded upon.

Show moreDuring the milling operations at an industrial steel producer like A. Finkl & Sons (Chicago, IL), a substantial amount of time and money is lost due to the fact that cutting inserts break and without warning. The goal of this project is to devise an effective means by which a cutting insert breakage event can be quickly and reliably detected, thereby minimizing damage to the steel and other cutting inserts, and also freeing technicians to attend multiple machines at a time. This increases the productivity of their operations, and it has the potential to save A. Finkl & Sons substantial costs per year in time lost in rework and prematurely broken cutting inserts.

Show moreGPS modules and tracking devices have influenced many advances in modern technology. The data GPS provides has replaced the map and compass, and can be crucial in many situations. Its current platform for use however requires the user to utilize a handheld device and direct his/her frame of view to a screen. In many situations there is a need to have eyes on and full awareness of surroundings, something that simply can't be done while holding and viewing a handheld device. To solve this dilemma, team Smart Specs has integrated ideas of GPS, heads-up displays, and datalink technology to form a design that will give the user full hands free capabilities. This device, worn like glasses, allows the user to track objects and even designate objects to be tracked, which are all shown through heads-up display.

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.

Show moreMost of the existing large scale urban food depositories / pantries are based on a model of food production and distribution which has not changed in the last forty years. It is essentially the same model used by large private grocery chains, involving off-site food acquisition (either through production or donation) and dissemination to large distribution centers. In some cases, these distribution centers are then accessed by either individuals or organizations which truck the goods to smaller, local urban distribution points. In other cases, patrons are required to visit the large facility, which it typically in a less accessible location.

Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab IPRO is to design a universal format for occupying laboratories that utilize the minimal amount of energy. For the Zero Energy Lab to be usable at all hours of the day, proper lighting is a necessity. The installation of an appropriately designed lighting system, which will be both cost and energy efficient, will be a high priority in the overall scheme. A small section of the overall space will be the prototype of the design, which will in turn allow for the further development of lighting implementation.
