Show moreThis is the second phase of this project as a continuation of Spring 2008 IPRO 317 and will have a focus for Summer 2008 on the computer program, the user interface, as well as completion of the first geographic area of the scale model. The objective of this project is to design and construct a 3-D scale model for the first portion of downtown Chicago (downtown Chicago has been subdivided into 6 portions). The model will be used to simulate and test the effectiveness of fire defense strategies to address fire or other catastrophes related to public health and safety. This model will include streets, buildings and detailed information that help the Chicago Fire Department in planning interventions, considering various scenarios and case studies. The model is being built in phases, with the overall design incorporating a sophisticated, computer-driven illumination scheme built within the model base. The model thus will be able to display animated scenarios of virtually any depth and focus, by means of time-varying color and brightness. CAD Computer-generated images and laser-cutting methods are the main techniques used to design and build the model, but hand craftsmanship is also necessary. The completed model will be fully modular, designed to transport easily to various facilities. The usefulness of the model thus will extend to many needs of the Chicago Fire Department and City of Chicago, as an educational tool within the department and for community outreach. Possible additional uses for the model will be wind tunnel measurement of pressure distributions to inform building design and City infrastructure needs, as well as the study of urban microclimates and the impact on building energy demand. There is also the potential for this model and its design approach to inform the development of scale models to depict the venues associated with the proposed 2016 Olympics along the Chicago lakefront. This project will include: (1) Identification of the scale, materials, technologies, and strategies for construction; (2) Physical mapping and computer modeling of the downtown built environment; (3) Design of the physical model and computer/electronic components; and (4) Construction of a reduced-area mock-up for final review and approval by the City of Chicago.

Show moreThe goal of this project was to determine the feasibility of using the heated waste water from the Braidwood Generating Station for use in greenhouse applications. Though extremely efficient, the Braidwood Generating Station, like all nuclear power plants, still wastes two-thirds of all energy generated and pumps 1.5 million gallons per minute of warm waste water into its cooling lake. All of this thermal energy pumped into the cooling lake is wasted. IPRO 342 was looking to change that.

Show moreFabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to provide digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (MSI) has partnered with this IPRO to further develop their existing Fab Lab. IPRO 333 has been assigned the task of working with the Fab Lab administrators to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and determining its end goals for both the museum and the community. Once these goals are established, we will support them with a list of projects that we will create and execute. By working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, we hope to encourage hands-on learning in local schools. This will promote membership at MSI and involve the community in science and technology programs and education. To accomplish this, we have broken into two teams, each of which will focus on a different audience. The first team will be responsible for designing and creating programs for more advanced and knowledgeable users of the equipment specific to the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program as well as museum members; the second team will be responsible for designing and implementing programs for less advanced users with more constrained timeframes, such as visiting families or groups of school children.

Show moreA new high-charge RF gun is now operating at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) facility at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The 1.5 cell 1.3 GHz gun uses a Cesium telluride photocathode driven with a 248 nm laser to provide short-pulse, high charge electron beams for the new 75 MeV drive beamline. The high-gradient RF gun (peak field on the cathode > 80MV/m) is a key piece of the facility upgrade. The large Cs2Te photocathode (diameter > 30 mm) was fabricated in-house. The photo-injector will be used to generate high-charge, short pulse, single bunches (Q > 100 nC) and bunch-trains (Q>1000 nC) for wakefield experiments, typically involving dielectric-loaded accelerating structures. Details of the photocathode fabrication process and the results of associated diagnostic measurements are presented, including QE measurements and work function measurements performed with a Kelvin probe. Field-emitted dark current from the Cs2Te cathode was measured during RF conditioning and characterized. Fowler-Nordheim plots of the data are presented and compared to similar measurements made using a copper cathode in the initial phase of conditioning. The results for cesium telluride exhibited non-linear regions within the Fowler-Nordheim plots similar to previous experimental results for other p-type semiconductors. Results of quantum efficiency (QE) studies are presented with the cathode operating in both single and bunch-train modes. QE uniformity and lifetime studies are presented. During commissioning, the cesium telluride photocathode produced bunch-charge of 100 nC, breaking the previous record. No evidence of bunch-train position-dependence of QE was found when generating four-bunch trains with total charge up to 200 nC.
