Show moreLocated in Oakbrook, IL the architects and engineers of IPRO 315 will design a 22 story hotel. Together architects and engineers will modify and re analyze a structure created by pervious designers, and select any new materials for construction. In creating the hotel students will be responsible for the structural analysis of columns, beams, foundation, steel, and concrete design required to insure all serviceability requirements. The students will be required to follow the 2006 International Building Code, and secure the safety of all possible occupants. Management, leadership, ethics, and teamwork will be an integral part of building a large scale structure as students learn to work together on a “real life” project.

Show moreA method of making a molded biodegradable food receptacle product including the steps of grinding up non-toxic agricultural waste plant material like soy, rice, oat and wheat hulls into particles having a range of sizes so that, if compressed in a mold, the smaller particles substantially fill the spaces between the much larger ones. Where necessary, there is added to the particles a natural and biodegradable binder-forming material, like an edible vegetable oil which will bind like a food receptacle the particles together to form a leak-proof receptacle, when inserted into a mold and compressed by the mold walls at elevated temperatures will produce compact well bound together particles. Without any chemical or physical pretreatment of the ground particles and particle-binder feed mix, the unpretreated mix, with or without small amounts of coloring, aromatic or foaming agents, is fed into a pressure-applying mold. The initial pressure and temperature preferably squeezes inherent binding-forming oils from the preferably seed hulls which freely flow through the mix. The high pressure is then partially reduced and the mold temperature is elevated to maximize the binding action of the binder materials as they solidify.

Show moreDuring the fall 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to continue the development and creation of mock-ups for the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) as well as lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The members of IPRO 358 will work together to design mock-ups of the DHT, test the mock-ups, and determine measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing. Simultaneously, we will be working towards better understanding the consumer’s behavior. This will aid in the determination of the probable distribution channels and the strategies to best use them.

Show moreUltrasonic systems, applied in the field of Medical Imaging and Non-Destructive Testing, have evolved from the trolley-based units to more portable, hand-held devices. These systems are built to suit a specific application or aim at specific target material. In order to make these systems portable and adaptable to the testing environment, a flexible and programmable hardware is built. A fully configurable Analog Front-End (AFE) is presented, which possesses the capability for dynamic re-configuration by using ARM processing core for real-time control, data acquisition and signal analysis in a Linux environment. This system supports up to 8 ultrasonic sensors. The flexibility built into the AFE allows for various beamforming and signal conditioning requirements. This reconfigurable system enables ultrasonic researchers to efficiently prototype different experiments and to incorporate high performance ultrasonic signal and image processing algorithms. This system provides real-time signal processing for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and imaging applications using ultrasonic sensors ranging from 60 KHz to 15 MHz operating frequencies. A dynamically reconfigurable sensor interface is presented for ultrasonic pulse-echo measurements targeting flaw detection and parametric echo classification applications. For real-time implementation, a SoC-based system is developed on an ARM platform. For a working system, a BCM2835 SoC on a Raspberry Pi hardware system is explored with a further upgrade to Xilinx Zynq 7020 SoC in order to achieve a higher throughput.

Show moreThis project aims to help visually impaired individuals to exercise independently. While the primary focus this semester will be enabling visually impaired swimmers to swim independently, other physical activities will be researched for the purpose of choosing three activities to be considered for future projects. A passive device, which is a mechanically-based device that offers tactile feedback to the swimmer, and an active device, which is a sonarbased device, will both be developed in parallel to aid the swimmers. This project, overall, could potentially increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals, as well as improve their quality of life.

Show morehe proliferation of the Internet in recent years has led to more people using, and being confused by, computer interfaces. Usability testing is a formal laboratory procedure used to identify problems with user interfaces during the development of a product. It involves creating tasks for users to accomplish and watching whether they can complete the given tasks. More importantly, the testers observe how users interact with the interface in an attempt to understand why they perform the actions they do. The testing allows developers to identify issues with their designs early enough in the product development cycle to be able to change them, saving money and resources later, in addition to creating an easier-to-use product. Unfortunately, many companies do not implement usability testing or do so too late into development to make any substantive changes suggested by the testing. The result is often a product that is needlessly hard to use. The team will conduct usability tests during the semester to gain first-hand experience in all aspects of usability testing. This project will test the interfaces of products produced by other IPROs and will work closely with other teams to identify and address issues arising from their work so that students on this team and others can appreciate the value of usability testing and designing with the end users in mind.

Show moreCalamos Investments provides professional money management services to major corporations, public and private institutions, pension funds, insurance companies and individuals and is an investment advisor to open-end and closed-end funds. The company was founded in 1977 by John Calamos. The company’s cornerstone strategy is risk management. Calamos Investments underwent rapid growth, from managing $5 billion in assets in 1999 to over $45 in 2006. During this period, a lot of the personal touch that permeated the interaction between clients and the company’s leadership was lost. The number of clients grew too quickly. A high level of personal interaction between John Calamos and its core investors became difficult to attain. The IPRO 303 team attempted to digitally leverage John Calamos by researching and piloting new methods of customer interaction utilizing digital communication technologies.

Show moreIn the last two decades, mixed use has taken center stage in urban planning development in the United States. The research frequently cites this development as a model that can address a variety of socioeconomic problems. Also, it has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity in redeveloping cities by providing more affordable housing opportunities, ensuring safety, reducing auto-dependency, and for providing a sense of place and community. However, its affordability, physical design, and outcomes are highly variable. This study is particularly interested in whether and how mixed use affects the socioeconomics configuration of the built environment. This study uses multilevel data from the county level to the zip code level that represents all US neighborhoods. I use different implementation methods of mixed-use development and different cultural and historical backgrounds to examine the data. The study adopts six mixed-use models that present different methodological interactions between socioeconomic spatial metrics and urban forms. These models represent the realistic constraints of urban geometry and of the socioeconomic structure that comprises the charateristics of race, income, accessibility, safety, adjacency, accessibility, environment, and density. This study finds that the built environment produces a rich landscape of information that appears to guide the opportunities for facilities. The analysis shows that mixed-use development may have certain effects on the number of facilities, housing, income, diversity, crime rate, employment, health, and environment. The analysis of this research works in two dimensions. First, urban models (Hybrid and Social Condenser in general and under two categories Metropolis and Neighborhood Community). The second dimension is the urban characteristics (zoning programming, land use mix, streets fabric), socioeconomics variables (Population density, occupied housing, median age, diversity of race, income, and employment rates), and location variation (states, and cities). The results confirm that mixing the facilities in hybrid communities create more jobs opportunities but limit the affordability of housing, social cohesion and the race diversity. But in Social Condenser models, there are more race diversity safety and healthy environment. These results reflect complexity demands more than mixed-use developments, beyond Jane Jacobs' requirements, and beyond the designation of selected mixed-use zones. This study contributes to the study of how mixed-use development models shift because of various social and economic conditions. The findings from this study can inform architects, investors, policymakers, economists, and planners about factors that sustain mixed-use neighborhoods in the United States and beyond. Urban designers will be able to inform how the seemingly necessary act of laying out mixed-use development can affect the socioeconomic structure of a city. Thus, this study is a useful source for more accurate planning ideas than generic abstract theories or slogans.
