- Ethanol Ultra-Light Aircraft (Fall 2002) IPRO 317
- Students will continue the work of previous IPRO teams to convert a Quicksilver MXII ultralight airplane to run on E85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). This is technically challenging because the plane uses a 2-stroke Rotax 503 engine, where the oil must be mixed in with the fuel. After the conversion, the plane will be flight-tested. In the mean time, the plane can be flown by students to enjoy the experience of flying a personal-type aircraft. In addition to the technical aspects, the project involves developing and maintaining relationships with sponsors, public relations, and a study of the potential for ethanol in the ultralight aircraft market. This project may eventually lead to the creation of a student organization responsible for maintaining and flying the ultralight aircraft., Sponsorship: Cushing Air Field, Brandon Klein, Larry Garick, Project Plan for IPRO 317: Ethanol Ultra-Light Aircraft for the Fall 2002 semester

- Subharmonic Noise Reduction Circuit
- A subharmonic noise reduction circuit having an input terminal and an output terminal. The circuit has a first differential amplifier with a first non-inverting input, a first inverting input and a first output. The overall circuit input terminal is connected to the first non-inverting input. A low-pass filter is connected between the first output and the first inverting input. A second differential amplifier has a second non-inverting input, a second inverting input and a second output. The second output is connected to the overall circuit output terminal. A first resistor is connected between the second output and the second inverting input. A second resistor is connected between the first non-inverting input and the second non-inverting input. The circuit operates at unity gain of the DC voltage component and thus the DC output voltage follows the DC input voltage., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Process for Preparation of Hemoglobin Multiple Emulsions
- A process is provided wherein hemoglobin, a fragile material, is formulated into high hemoglobin content water-in-oil-in-water multiple emulsion while maintaining high yields and high oxygen exchange activity. A multiple emulsion of aqueous oxygen carrying material in oil in outer aqueous phase is suitable for provision of oxygen for oxygen transfer processes. A hemoglobin multiple emulsion in physiologically compatible oil in an outer aqueous saline solution is provided in sufficiently small droplet size to provide oxygen flow through blood vessels to desired body tissues or organs thereby providing a blood substitute., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, Sponsorship: Northfield Laboratories, Inc., United States Patent

- Development of a Portable Method for Preparing Previously Frozen Red Blood Cells for transfusion (semester?), IPRO 304C
- The objective of this project is to develop a system for washing multiple units of red blood cells (RBCs) to be used in an emergency situation. The major aspects of this system to be controlled will be: portability, minimum wash solution, minimum bio-waste, automation, and compliance with the standards necessary for transfusion. The goal of this project is to develop a theoretical design for a working system by the end of this semester., Deliverables for IPRO 304C: Development of a Portable Method for Preparing Previously Frozen Red Blood Cells for transfusion for the Spring 2005 semester

- Method and Apparatus for Electrostatic Spray Deposition for a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell
- A method and apparatus for electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) for fabricating a thin-layer yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte on a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode substrate constructed of nickel-YSZ cermet. By reducing the thickness of the electrolyte, and thereby reducing the cell internal IR drop, an intermediate temperature SOFC (ITSOFC) can operate at 600-800.degree. C. A collar positioned at a distance from a discharge end of a spray nozzle enhances a spray pattern of a precursor including the electrolyte material and thus provides a very thin electrolyte layer., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent, Primary US Patent Classification 118/624, US Patent Classification 118/504, US Patent Classification 118/621, US Patent Classification 118/628, US Patent Classification 118/629, US Patent Classification 239/706, International Patent Classification B05B 5/025, International Patent Classification B05C 11/00

- Hydrodynamic Cavitation Crystallization Device and Process
- A device and process for crystallizing a compound using hydrodynamic cavitation comprising the steps of mixing at least one stream of a feed solution of such compound to be crystallized with at least one stream of an anti-solvent in a nucleating section via collision of the feed solution and the anti-solvent, passing the mixed streams at an elevated pressure through at least one local constriction of flow to create hydrodynamic cavitation thereby causing nucleation and the production of seed crystals, passing the fluid stream containing the seed crystals through an intermediate section to a crystal growth section, passing the fluid stream containing the seed crystals through the crystal growth section at an elevated pressure through at least one local constriction of flow to create hydrodynamic cavitation thereby causing further crystallization of the compound contained in the solution., Sponsorship: Five Star Technologies, Inc., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- USHMM Mediator (semester?), IPRO 311
- The Spring ’05 semester IPRO 311 will focus on the task of implementing the Mediator, a multistructured search engine, on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum data set. It is our goal to provide a concrete example of Mediator working in a real world situation, so that we may use it as a reference during the future marketing of our product., Deliverables for IPRO 311: USHMM Mediator for the Spring 2005 semester

- Selecting a Compensation Strategy to Control Project Duration: Empirical Comparison of Lump Sum and Reimbursable Strategies (Working Paper)
- Reducing project duration is a significant concern for many industries in the speed-to-market era. Numerous studies have examined the effects of project delivery methods on speeding up the process of construction. However, no study has quantitatively compared the effect of using different compensation strategies on schedule duration and schedule reduction. Using the data obtained from 175 international construction projects, this paper focuses on examining the influence of compensation strategy (lump sum versus reimbursable) on project duration while specifically taking into account the industry sector (heavy industrial versus light industrial). The results of the study provide empirical evidence that using a reimbursable compensation strategy can potentially shorten the procurement duration, construction duration, and overall project duration of heavy industrial projects. However, reimbursable contracting did not appear to reduce the project duration on light industrial projects.
