- Application of Solar Thermal Technology in Large-Scale Buildings in the Urban Environment (Spring 2003) IPRO 328: Application of Solar Thermal Technology in Large-Scale Buildings in the Urban Environment IPRO328 Spring2003 Final Presentation
- Students will work in teams to accomplish research and present findings and recommendations about solar thermal as a viable renewable energy industry. The IPRO team will address the following goals and tasks: Research existing solar thermal products in the marketplace. Determine geographic locations worldwide where solar thermal is currently a viable alternative to fossil fuel consuming heating systems. Outline the history of solar thermal development in the United States and other world markets. Research the history of and current technology available for solar thermal installations. Rate various systems by efficiency, cost benefit, physical size required for heat production, ease of operation, durability and other criteria determined significant by the team. Outline construction and design criteria for installation in new and existing buildings. Using an existing building on the IIT campus, develop a plan for installation of solar thermal to produce heat and domestic hot water for the building. Determine how much fossil fuel consumption would be avoided through the installation of a solar thermal solution. Determine the approximate payback of the new solar thermal system based on today's energy, solar thermal system costs and construction costs. Illustrate examples of solar thermal installations on existing and new buildings to determine the effect solar thermal will have on the overall architecture of a building. Develop methodologies for incorporating solar thermal into the design of existing and new buildings which is aesthetically appropriate., Sponsorship: NA, Project Plan for IPRO 328: Application of Solar Thermal Technology in Large-Scale Buildings in the Urban Environment for the Spring 2003 semester

- Our Energy Future: Lessons in Sustainability AND IPRO Teams for K-12: The Education Outreach Service Learning Cluster (sequence unknown), IPRO 332 - Deliverables: Project Plan F09
- The mission of the IPRO is to educate the community, focusing mainly on elementary and high school students, on the issues of sustainability and energy conservation. The group looks to expand on the work that has been completed in previous semesters, by adding multi-media presentations to enhance the current teaching modules. Previous modules have presented to classrooms simply with information, and the team looks to add upon this by adding interactive and entertaining materials to intrigue the audience., Deliverables for IPRO 332: IOur Energy Future: Lessons in Sustainability AND IPRO Teams for K-12: The Education Outreach Service Learning Cluster for the fall 2009 semester

- Collective dynamics of the p-Pb collisions at the LHC
- We review the signatures for the soft collective dynamics in highest-multiplicity ultrarelativistic p-Pb collisions and show that the effects are well described in a three-stage model, consisting of the event-by-event Glauber initial conditions, viscous 3+1D hydrodynamics, and statistical hadronization. In particular, we discuss the ridges in two-particle correla- tions in the relative azimuth and pseudorapidity, the elliptic and triangular flow coefficients, and the mass hierarchy of observables sensitive to flow., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory

- Energy Effciency and Audio Quality in Mobile Devices and Intercom Systems (sequence unknown), IPRO 344 - Project Plan
- The team's initiative is to evaluate the sound quality delivered by an audio system in a practical situation and compare it with industrial standards. A longer term objective is to incorporate adaptive measure so that noise cancellation and sound-level optimization can be realized., Sponsorship: Shure Inc., Project plan for IPRO 344: Energy Effciency and Audio Quality in Mobile Devices and Intercom Systems for the fall 2009 semester

- Video Recording System
- In the disclosed embodiments the video signal is recorded on successive longitudinal tracks with high frequency bias. The sound may be recorded transversely on adjacent tracks or may be recorded with the video as pulse modulation in the horizontal blanking intervals. The video bias frequency is selected so as to avoid beat notes with the video signal. The horizontal and vertical sync signals may be amplified separate from the composite video and then added thereto so as to record sync signals of increased amplitude. The picture signal from a television receiver may be recorded without further amplification., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

- Intermodal Container Transport (Semester Unknown) IPRO 307
- The direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment., Deliverables

- Apparatus and Method for Precise Angular Positioning
- An apparatus and method for precise angular positioning of an object. A first pivot arm and a second pivot arm each is pivotally mounted with respect to a base. A pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the first pivot arm and allows the first pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, within a particular plane. A second pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the second pivot arm and allows the second pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, and also within either the same plane or a different plane as the plane within which the first pivot arm pivots. Support structures maintain each of the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm within the particular plane or planes. An interconnect flex member connects the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm. With a relatively small base and thus overall apparatus, an input movement, such as a linear input of about 10 mm can be translated into an output movement of about 7200 radians., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Small-Scale Desalination (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 354
- Freshwater is one of Earth’s most precious resources and is now increasing in scarcity. Global warming induced climate change is now changing rain patterns and causing record drought, growing global populations are increasing demand, and the individual demand per person is increasing and human populations urbanize and adopt modern plumbing. The biggest contributor to increasing demand for water is mismanagement and pollution. However for this project we will be focusing on water quantity rather than quality., Deliverables

- Zoo Tech (Semester Unknown) IPRO 318
- Do you love the zoo? Do you wish you could see all of the animals and learn about them too in just one easy visit? Our IPRO team is creating an iPhone application to do just that. We’re working with the Brookfield Zoo education staff and animal researchers to develop a guided inquiry process that will assist users in finding and identifying animals. Getting closer to an animal is a breeze. Because the animals’ locations are mapped, you can find them easily on foot or identify them by their color, pattern, and shape. Learn fun facts about any animal you choose while watching videos and scrolling through pictures. We’re working to create the best tour guide for the zoo that fits in your pocket., Sponsorship: Brookfield Zoo, Deliverables
