Developing a Tool Crib Management System & Feed Mechanism for Semi-Automated Welding Process (sequence unknown), IPRO 347 - Project Plan
Smith & Richardson, Inc. manufactures hundreds of different metal parts using a variety of stamping and welding equipment. There are two projects that are to be undertaken by the IPRO team: first to identify methods and programs that can be used to create a cohesive and easy to navigate database for machine shop tool storage and to implement that system so that it meshes with an existing computer system; second to identify methods, materials, and systems that can be used to automate a manual sorting and placement process and to achieve a working prototype of the mechanism., Sponsorship: Smith & Richardson, Inc. Shock-induced Flow Resonance in Supersonic Jets of Complex Geometry
Jets with complex shock-cell structures exist in numerous technological applications. This paper describes a fundamental study of shock-induced flow resonance (commonly referred to as "jet screech") in supersonic jets with spanwise nonuniform shock-cell structures. Experiments that involve flow visualization and detailed mapping of the near field reveal unsteady aspects of shock-induced flow resonances, mode transitions, and directivity of the radiated noise. The following important results about the role of spanwise nonuniform shock-cells emerged: (1) It is possible to have two coexisting, independent feedback loops at nonharmonically related frequencies and different spanwise modes. (2) The same type of spanwise asymmetric mode was produced by two entirely different source configurations. (3) Nozzle geometry significantly altered the intensity and directivity of screech and broadband shock noise. The results presented here provide considerable insight into the fluid dynamics and acoustics of jets with spanwise oblique shock-cell structures and provide grounds for believing that shock-induced noise can be controlled by tailoring nozzle geometry. Holomoire Strain Examiner
A system and process for the measurement of strains in objects using holographic interferometry comprising a continuous point light source for illuminating the object, a fringe stabilizer for compensating for the vibratory motion of the object, a detector for capturing a holographic image, a rigid body motion compensator for compensating for the rigid body motion of the object caused by displacement of the object upon application of a force, and an electronic system for reconstructing the holographic image to permit comparison of the object before and after application of a force., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent
What's Congress Doing on Twitter?
As Twitter becomes a more common means for officials to communicate with their constituents, it becomes more important that we understand how officials use these communication tools. Using data from 380 members of Congress’ Twitter activity during the winter of 2012, we find that officials frequently use Twitter to advertise their political positions and to provide information but rarely to request political action from their constituents or to recognize the good work of others. We highlight a number of differences in communication frequency between men and women, Senators and Representatives, Republicans and Democrats. We provide groundwork for future research examining the behavior of public officials online and testing the predictive power of officials’ social media behavior.

Automatic Insulin Pumps Using Recursive Multivariable Models and Adaptive Control Algorithms
A method and device for monitoring or treating patient glucose levels. The device includes a glucose sensor for measuring a glucose level of a patient, a physiological status monitoring system for measuring at least one physical or metabolic variable of the patient, and an automatic controller in communication with the glucose sensor and the physiological status monitoring system. The controller includes a prediction module for automatically predicting a future glucose level using data measured by the glucose sensor and the physiological sensor., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

Design and Global Market Analysis of a Tool Cabinet (Semester Unknown) IPRO 341
Design and Global Market Analysis of a Tool Cabinet (Semester Unknown) IPRO 341
The objective of IPRO 341 is to assist Versatility Tool Works with the design, testing, and marketing of an industrial strength tool cabinet. Ideally, one or more of the drawers in the cabinet should be capable of holding 450 pounds of equipment, and have a lifespan of 20,000 cycles. (One (1) cycle is defined as one opening and closing of the drawer.) Extra features to include in the design of the cabinet will also be investigated to try to make the cabinet more marketable. However, it will be important to first determine what progress has been made thus far so that this semester’s design improvements can be better demonstrated., Deliverables

Our Energy Future: Lessons in Sustainability AND IPRO Teams for K-12: The Education Outreach Service Learning Cluster (sequence unknown), IPRO 332 - Deliverables
The mission of the IPRO is to educate the community, focusing mainly on elementary and high school students, on the issues of sustainability and energy conservation. The group looks to expand on the work that has been completed in previous semesters, by adding multi-media presentations to enhance the current teaching modules. Previous modules have presented to classrooms simply with information, and the team looks to add upon this by adding interactive and entertaining materials to intrigue the audience., Deliverables for IPRO 332: IOur Energy Future: Lessons in Sustainability AND IPRO Teams for K-12: The Education Outreach Service Learning Cluster for the fall 2009 semester
Method and Apparatus for Passive Mapping
A passive mapping system employs an antenna or other sensing means having a receiving beam pattern which is scanned in azimuth while moving along a path relative to the area to be mapped. The received signal, after detection and other processing, is recorded on a moving record medium in such a manner that each emitting element in the mapped area generates a straight line of a certain intensity or contrast on the record medium with a slope corresponding to the emitting element range, and the position along the medium corresponding to the location of the antenna along the path. Subsequently, the record medium is processed to collapse or integrate each straight signal line into a point on a further record medium to produce a radiometric plan view map of the area., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent
Global Warming and Community Outreach (Semester Unknown) IPRO 331
Global Warming and Community Outreach (Semester Unknown) IPRO 331
IPRO 331, its team members, and all involved faculty are devoted to enhancing awareness in the community to the issues surrounding global warming. Our goal is to give PowerPoint presentations to several different audiences, especially today’s younger generations in elementary school, high school, and college, in order to both educate and interest people in these issues. Our presentations are meant to be objective – we want to present the facts about global warming research from credible sources. Additionally, with the help of our website and contacts, we hope to be another driving force in the sustainability movement and climate change research. Our purpose can be summed up in a quote included at the end of each of our presentations: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin, Deliverables
Intermodal Container Transport System Solutions for Chicago Region (semester?), IPRO 307
Intermodal Container Transport System Solutions for Chicago Region (semester?), IPRO 307
This IPRO will focus on the road and rail modes of transportation. Specifically, the team will investigate intermodal rail yards that specialize in transferring containers from trucks to trains, and vice versa. It will then put this knowledge to use by designing an actual intermodal rail yard for the Gary, Indiana area. The objective of this IPRO is to produce a thorough site plan for the Gary rail yard, a computer program to communicate with truck drivers, and an encompassing business plan., Deliverables for IPRO 307: Intermodal Container Transport System Solutions for Chicago Region for the Fall 2007 semester
