Sustainable Entrepreneurial Economic Development (Summer 2011) IPRO 350
Sustainable Entrepreneurial Economic Development (Summer 2011) IPRO 350
Coal city is a small town in Illinois that has partnered with IIT. Its current population is 5,152 people and has been steadily increasing. Coal City is located just south of I-80 along the I- 55 corridor and less than an hour from Bolingbrook and Oakbrook. Along the northern border of Coal city, are adjoining lakes and abandoned coal mines. Small town atmosphere is conducive to community interaction and pride. The purpose of this project was to provide the framework for creating the most feasible and sustainable economic development model for the village of Coal City using generalized approaches that could be emulated in other small towns. the objectives that the team has set are: Gather information that will lead to the creation of an effective plan. Study models and components of Sustainable Economic Development focusing on small towns and rural areas. Study the demographics, human systems, existing industry systems, bio-physical systems, government and social policy systems and the existing industry clusters. Understand community, local, and regional assets and talent pool, town vision, mission and economic development plans., Sponsorship: NA, Project Plan for IPRO 350: Sustainable Entrepreneurial Economic Development for the Summer 2011 semester

Pneumatic Yaw Control Effector for Aircraft
An apparatus and method for controlling a yaw moment of a flight vehicle, such as an aircraft. A wing structure of the flight vehicle has a first opening or actuator positioned by a first apex section of a first side of the wing, and has a second opening or actuator positioned away from or at a distance from a second apex section of a second side of the wing. The first side and the second side can each be positioned or located opposite a centerline of the wing or wing structure. A pressure source or other pressure supply device is in communication with the first opening or actuator and the second opening or actuator to which a pressurized fluid, such as air, is controlled and delivered to control or vary the yaw moment of the flight vehicle., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent
Peer-to-Peer File Sharing
A peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing system is provided with an enhanced search method for a client computer therein. The method includes masking at least one term in a multi-term query entered into a client computer of the P2P system to obtain a masked query and routing the masked query to a plurality of server computers. The masked query is compared to a file descriptor of server files in each of the plurality of server computers to identify a plurality of matching server files. The server computers return to the client computer as search results the file descriptor and a mathematical identifier for each of the plurality of matching server files. The server computer may return to the client computer only a subset of the plurality of the matching server files. Enhanced P2P file searching accuracy is provided., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

The IIT Reality: Finding a Job (semester?), IPRO 333
This semester IPRO 333, Video Documentary – Getting a Job after Graduation, is aiming its effort to help Illinois Institute of Technology Students get better jobs after graduation. This continuation of an earlier IPRO will strive to produce a video that presents four different challenges to be completed in the job seeking process. Students will work together in four “challenge” teams as well as three technical teams to accomplish its objective., Deliverables for IPRO 333: The IIT Reality - Finding a Job for the Fall 2006 semester
Integrated Bi-directional Converter for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
This invention relates to a power module for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle including an integrated converter having a rectifier changing AC to DC, a DC/DC converter changing from a first voltage to a second voltage, and a battery storing electrical energy. The integrated converter operates in three modes 1) AC plug-in charging mode, 2) boost mode supplying power from the battery to the electrical bus and 3) buck mode supplying power from the electrical bus to the battery. The integrated converter utilizes the same single inductor during each of the three operating modes to reduce cost and weight of the system., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent
SYNTHESIS OF MODEL-BASED CONTROLLERS FOR AN AUTOTHERMAL REACTOR
Model-based controllers for a bench scale autothermal tubular packed-bed reactor have been formulated using the Internal Model Control (IMC) approach. The Structural Dominance Analysis technique has been used in developing the reduced-order models. Controller performance at robust and sensitive steady states have been assessed through simulations and experiments. Both PI and model-based controllers can regulate reactor operation at robust steady states, but only third order IMC controllers are able to regulate reactor operation at the sensitive steady state., Endnote format citation
Smart Specs for Civilian Military Applications (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 350
Smart Specs for Civilian Military Applications (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 350
In the real world, receiving the right information at the right time exacts success or failure. In the growing sport of paintball, every little edge counts towards victory. Real Time Initiative offers Smart Specs to our consumers to obtain an edge over the competition. Smart Specs relay real-time networked information amongst the users to distinguish friends from foes. The communication occurs through head mounted displays worn within the paintball masks. It reduces friendly fire which in turn reduces tension within the team., Deliverables

DYNAMIC ESTIMATION OF TEMPERATURE AND CONCENTRATION PROFILES IN A PACKED-BED REACTOR
A two-dimensional nonlinear distributed-parameter optimal state estimation algorithm has been developed and applied to an exothermic packed bed catalytic reactor. Temperature and concentration profiles were estimated from limited temperature and/or concentration measurements. Orthogonal collocation was used to solve the differential sensitivity and filtering equations. Both simulations and on-line experiments with a pilot scale packed bed reactor for the partial oxidation of methanol have been used to study the effects of measurement choice, model parameter errors, and unmeasured process disturbances. Excellent tracking of the reactor profiles was achieved with only one or two properly placed temperature sensors., Endnote format citation
The academic library building in the digital age : a study of construction, planning, and design of new library space
The Academic Library Building in the Digital Age: A Study of Construction, Planning, and Design of New Library Space is the first comprehensive study of planning and construction of academic library buildings completed entirely in the new century. Given digitization of collections, the dynamic mix of new learning spaces with traditional library functions, and other factors informing contemporary library design, the digital age has not raised so much the question of if libraries will survive, but how they will survive. This book answers this question, among others, by looking to academic library building projects completed in recent years.
