Show moreTurbulent boundary layer flow research uses oil film and oil drop interferometry to measure wall shear stress of air flows. Oil film interferometry determines the rate oil decreases on a surface as the function of the shear stress magnitude. Current traditional methods have proven to be accurate but the solution is obtained by assuming a linear height distribution [3]. This assumes a constant shear stress along the oil drop and assures that there is no effect of the oil drop on the incoming boundary layer [3]. This effect maintains the continuity of shear stress at the air/oil interface, but the stream-wise velocity at the interface is discontinuous. It is thought that these approximations contain small errors but this has not been verified for zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer [3]. A computational fluid dynamics numerical study was performed to simulate the two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) effects of air flow over an oil drop and the drop’s movement across the channel surface.

Show moreMost of the existing large scale urban food depositories / pantries are based on a model of food production and distribution which has not changed in the last forty years. It is essentially the same model used by large private grocery chains, involving off-site food acquisition (either through production or donation) and dissemination to large distribution centers. In some cases, these distribution centers are then accessed by either individuals or organizations which truck the goods to smaller, local urban distribution points. In other cases, patrons are required to visit the large facility, which it typically in a less accessible location.

To that end, the current semester is focused on several design projects based on concepts generated in the previous semester. These projects will then be analyzed regarding their appeal, both direct and methodological, to other members of the IIT community in order to inform the best model for sustainability develop to be promoted by future semesters of this project.

The decision was made between Joomla, Mambo, and PHP-Nuke. All three are CMS systems with varying capabilities and weaknesses. The description for each of the CMS systems is provided below. What is left is to continue getting feedback from the client as well as continuing to adapt and modify Joomla as needed to fit our needs.

Show moreGenetically modified crops have come to play an increasingly large role in our daily lives. Unfortunately these crops remain a mystery to much of the general population. For some, ideas about GM crops are exciting and represent hope for new potential in science and agriculture, for others they represent potential danger, and for others there are simply many unanswered questions. Our goal this semester will be to create a new source of information about GM products and to provide information that will answer the many questions we all have about this important subject. To do this, our objectives will be to: 1. Collect background information in an unbiased and comprehensive manner about laws and regulations regarding genetically modified crops. 2. Gather information about public opinion concerning GM crops. 3. Present facts about the processes and technologies that are used in this industry. 4. Create a database of known genetically modified crops, potential allergens, and traits in order to provide future IPRO’s with a foundation of knowledge concerning GM crops.

Show moreThe members of IPRO 318 are collaborating with the Brookfield Zoo to develop an iPhone application that will enhance the visitors’ experience and interactions with the zoo environment. This application will be an educational device in addition to trip planning tool. As such, it will be broken down into two major components. First, an educational module that includes the guided inquiry system for animal identification with other informative and interesting functions (such as games, social networks, etc.). Second, the commodity module, which includes an interactive map with GPS, basic park information (such as hours, tickets, parking, etc.), and functions related to other services provided by the zoo. Additionally, it involves designing a sleek, logical, user-friendly layout. By organizing the animal database and additional information provided by the zoo, and coupling this with the tools available on the iPhone, IPRO 318 seeks to design an efficient and entertaining means of utilizing modern technology to explore the zoo and its animals. This document provides a detailed overview of the project, including the plan of action, work breakdown, project goals, background information, and the organization of the IPRO team.

Show moreThis paper develops threat models and mitigation techniques for mutually consistent satellite faults that are not detectable using Advanced Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (ARAIM) methods but are potentially hazardous to aviation users. Faults in the generation of Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs), EOP Predictions (EOPPs) and their subsequent processing by the GPS Operational Control Segment (OCS) are of particular interest. In principle, if such faults are not detected by OCS, GPS satellite ephemerides could be corrupted constellation-wide in a consistent way, rendering existing ARAIM algorithms ineffective. The initial credibility of the EOP threat is established by the fact that it is explicitly listed as a potential integrity failure mode in the current GPS Standard Positioning Service Performance Standard (GPS SPS). Additionally, an observed EOP fault occurred on June 17, 2012. The dynamics of EOP faults can be reliably modeled as an initial bias with additive linear time variations. An initial broadcast ephemeris (A) is assumed to be EOP fault free and is verified as such via a ground monitor. If the second ephemeris (B) contains an EOP fault, then all satellite positions computed using ephemeris (B) would be rotated with respect to satellite positions obtained from ephemeris (A). Using the difference between the two computed satellite positions as the monitor 'measurement' in conjunction with the dynamic fault model, the parameters defining the EOP fault can be estimated using weighted least squares estimation. The two monitor components (airborne and ground) are bridged together by an Integrity Support Message (ISM). The ISM is needed to provide airborne users with essential information to bound nominal error distributions and fault prior probabilities. xiii The ISM also provides a means to inform airborne users of which ephemerides have passed civil ground monitor validation. The frequency of ISM updates needed to protect airborne GNSS users from the EOP threat is specified. Finally, global availability analysis show that the inclusion of the EOP fault detection algorithms does not cause any availability loss for LPV-200 aircraft precision approach applications.

Show moreA French company has developed new technology for a wind turbine that produces significantly more energy for a given diameter. This company has agreed to donate a 12 kilowatt prototype unit for research purposes. The project will not only be directed to assessing the efficiency of the wind turbine, but also to the development of a unique stable energy source that integrates several renewable energy sources. The City of Chicago Department of Environment has agreed to partner with IIT in the development of this system. This IPRO team will be responsible for developing the research plan which will include but not be limited to: 1) identifying and assessing alternate locations for siting the wind turbine prototype, 2) developing the research protocol, 3) evaluating wind data in the Chicago area, 4) reviewing the legal aspects of the project including permitting requirements, 5) identifying potential contractors for the installation of the prototype, and 6) developing a preliminary design for the electrical generating system described above.

Show moreA. Cinar et al. (1987) have shown that vibrational control of an exothermic continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) by vibrating the total flow rate modifies its behavior and leads to stabilized operation in its unstable steady-state region. Here, the effect of multiple vibrating inputs and the contribution of their phase shift are investigated. Theoretical and experimental results indicate productivity improvement and amplitude reduction in reactor temperature swings by vibrating both input flow rate and input concentrations.
