- We would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced processing of signals from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released this spring. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. Show moreAn estimated 2.7 million people die prematurely each year due to smoke and toxic emissions from wood burning. Around 3.1 million people died in 2002 as a result of diarrhea related diseases which are contracted from polluted water; 90% of whom were children. Out of 792 million people suffering from malnutrition, 5 million children die each year. 4 out of 5 of these 792 million people do not have access to needed fruits and vegetables. For the past four semesters, IPRO 325 has focused on helping solve problems of the world’s rural poor. This semester, the team is focused on improving last semester’s designs and developing better field manuals. Our team implemented our past projects in Sincape, Peru last semester, and we also intend to go back to look at them after a semester and implement more of our projects.

Intermodal transportations are the use of multiple types of transportation such as ships, planes, locomotive and semi-trailers to transport goods in and out of the United States. An example of this would be the importation of goods from overseas that arrive in the United States via cargo ships. Distribution of these goods can vary depending on the distance the container needs to travel. Containers that travel short distances will be done via semi-trailer, whereas containers that have to travel cross country are loaded into locomotives and transported the Midwest for sub-distribution or the other coast for distribution. Why is intermodal transportation important? The efficiency in moving products is what makes Intermodal Transportation important. The more efficient a product is distributed the more money is saved, due to less time and less labor involved in the process. What is the scope of this IPRO? The scope of this IPRO is to provide a manifesto of good practices that will improve intermodal transportation to be environmentally conscious and friendly. The IPRO team will produce a book containing good practices in the design of an intermodal facility. The team will also implement the methods by producing a build-out. The team will also focus on the Clark Road bridge design from previous semester to help improve the commerciality of Gary, Indiana. There is a growing concern today to be more environmentally conscious and friendly. Cities like Chicago are introducing green roofs to help the environment by reducing carbon dioxide therefore lessening the green house effects. The challenge for this IPRO team is how we can improve intermodal yards while 3 keeping in mind the environmental and ethical issues. Some of the environmental issues the team is dealing with are noise, water, air and land quality. The ethical issues are the effect on the individual and the community of having an intermodal facility at your back door. The team will research and find solutions for these issues and write up a report to publish in the book.

During the course of this workshop, we will implement the formative stages of a user-centered design process by developing and prototyping design concepts based on an understanding of existing social networks in small business communities in two neighborhoods, Pilsen/Little Village in Chicago and Powai in Mumbai. The goal will be to develop product, communication or service designs that contribute to increasing prosperity and small business growth within the Chicago and Mumbai neighborhoods. This project will be undertaken in collaboration with graduate students at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) and their Industrial Design Centre, (comparable to IIT Institute of Design), as well as staff at Honeywell in Bangalore and Minneapolis. By working on this project students, both undergraduate IPRO students and graduate IIT, Chicago’s design school students are intended to gain proficiency in remote research methods and collaborating with your contemporaries abroad on a global design project. The flavor of this effort will be a practical or professional one, working towards implementation and design refinement. Show moreThe two research questions that guided this study were: (1) How do preservice teachers develop mathematical knowledge for teaching during a coordinated math methods course and field experience? and (2) What types of portfolio tasks lend themselves to documenting mathematical knowledge in teaching? Six, female, elementary (K-8) teacher candidates who were co-enrolled in Math Methods, K-9, and Field Experience II, during the 15-week, fall 2012 semester at Lewis University were the participants in this study. The six teacher candidates all completed their field experiences in the same K-8 school, St. Joseph, in Lockport, Illinois. Three of the teacher candidates had elementary placements (grades K, 1, and 4) and three of the teacher candidates had middle school placements (5, 6, and 7). Each of the teacher candidates completed pretest and post-test DTAMS assessments. All candidates taught three mathematics lessons, which were videotaped and observed by the researcher. After each lesson was taught, a debriefing interview on the strengths, improvements, and next steps was conducted. Math Methods class sessions and Field Experience II seminars were recorded. Finally, each teacher candidate submitted a Math Teaching Portfolio. Results illustrated the growth of mathematical knowledge for teaching that occurred for each participant. In addition, results indicated which portfolio tasks are best for documenting mathematical knowledge for teaching. Implications for the field of mathematics education, future research, and teacher preparation programs are also discussed.

Show moreBreast cancer is a second leading cause of cancer related deaths. 15-20 % of women with Breast cancer are diagnosed with Triple negative breast cancer (ER, PR, and HER2 –ve) which is the most aggressive type showing higher incidence of recurrence at the local as well as distant sites. Conventional chemotherapy, which shows high levels of toxicity, is the only option available for triple negative breast cancer as hormonal therapy does not work. Thus new drugs which could successfully inhibit the growth of triple negative breast cancer along with the inhibition of metastasis are highly desired. Deguelin, originally isolated from an African plant Mundulea sericea is shown to be effective in skin, lung, breast and colon cancer, effect is thought to be mediated by downregulation of the PI3K/AKT pathway. However, its effect on triple negative breast cancer in vitro and in vivo has not been evaluated. There are few in vivo experimental models to study the effect of novel drugs for the therapy of TNBCs. Murine 4T1 mammary breast cancer cell model is so far the most appropriate experimental model to study efficacy of new drugs on not only tumor growth but also on metastasis to different visceral organs including lungs. This model is relevant and mimics stage IV breast cancer in women. We evaluated the effects of Deguelin on triple negative and highly metastatic breast cancer cell line MDA MB 231 and also In vivo in the 4T1 breast cancer model. We also evaluated effect of Deguelin in combination with low dose (IC30) Taxol. Deguelin treatment alone inhibited the growth of MDA MB 231 breast cancer cells in a time and dose dependent manner causing S-G2 arrest. Deguelin induced apoptosis and inhibited cell proliferation. Deguelin also induced changes in the cell shape and subcellular distribution of the cytoskeletal (F-actin and Tubulin) and cell-cell attachment protein beta-catenin. Growth inhibitory effect was enhanced when Deguelin was given along with low dose Taxol. In vivo, Deguelin (2 or 6mg/kg body weight) administered daily for 21 days significantly (P<0.05) inhibited growth of 4T1 cells transplanted s.c. in to 4-6 weeks old female BALB/c mice. Interestingly, as compared to vehicle only, Deguelin treatment also significantly (P<0.02) reduced the number of metastatic lesions from intravenously injected 4T1 cells. Western blot analysis of several key signaling proteins in MDA MB 231 cells suggested that Deguelin (250nM) reduces PI3K, pAKT, and NF-κB protein levels. Immunohistochemical studies in 4T1 xenografts and metastatic lung lesions obtained from vehicle and Deguelin treated animals suggested that Deguelin reduces pAKT, COX2 and HIF-1 alpha, major key players involved in angiogenesis, cell proliferation and metastasis. In conclusion, our results show that Deguelin has growth inhibitory effect on TNBC cell lines; it inhibits in vivo and in vitro growth of murine mammary cancer cell line. Deguelin has anti metastatic activity in 4T1 experimental model. Anti proliferative and anti metastatic effects of Deguelin are mediated through down regulation of pAKT, COX2 and HIF-1 alpha. Deguelin alone or in combination to Taxol showed promising results and could be further developed as potential drugs for the treatment of triple negative breast cancer.

Show moreThis thesis briefly introduces background subtraction which is one of the current advanced techniques for intelligent video surveillance. The paper also presents an improved background subtraction technique for motion detection in the area of intelligent video surveillance. The proposed technique is difference from the state-of-the-art background subtraction algorithms such as Gaussian Mixture Models or Behavior Subtraction, etc. The idea of this enhanced background subtraction is inspired by the ViBe algorithm. In the first step, which is the initialization of background subtraction, it takes samples only in its current location and 3x3 neighborhoods for each pixel. Then compare each pixel with the sampling set to determine whether this pixel belongs to background models or foreground objects. The next step is to update the sampling sets so that the algorithm can adapt to different scenarios. The final procedure is the post-processing method, which has better performance to overcome difficulties. This approach differs from those based upon the classical belief that the samples set of current pixels should be collected according to certain mathematic models. Experimental results of the proposed algorithm are better than earlier techniques that use the ViBe algorithm. Show moreFriction stir welding (FSW) has many promising industrial applications due to its solid-state nature and the associated benefits. However, some challenges still exist, such as: (i) a high tool loading force is required to generate the friction heat needed to soften the material, which often limits tool life, and (ii) FSW often desires a narrow temperature range near but below the melting point, which makes it challenging to get a deep welding depth without melting the top surface. Electricity-assisted FSW (EAFSW) has been previously studied in literature, where the current is applied from the tool. The electricity generates additional resistance heat, which may increase the welding efficiency and decrease the required tool loading force. However, this approach yields a relatively high temperature gradient in the depth direction, and is difficult to effectively enhance the welding depth without melting the top surface. In this thesis, a new EAFSW process is proposed and studied, where the current is applied from the workpiece side surfaces. The study is based on an experimentally tested physics-based model, and it shows that the new EAFSW process has a great potential to enhance the welding efficiency, decrease the required tool loading force, and increase the welding depth without melting the top surface.

Show moreIPRO 310 is continuing into its fourth semester of creating devices to assist the millions of blind and visually impaired people in the United States to swim independently and without sustaining injuries. Due to the size of the team, now and in the past, IPRO 310 divides itself into 3 subteams. The three sub‐teams are the passive sub‐team, the active sub‐team, and the research sub‐team; which this year has become the business plan/EnPRO sub‐team. Though we meet as a single IPRO several times a week, most of the work done outside of class will be in separate teams. Because of the great differences between each segment of the project, each sub‐team has devised their own plan. The passive team will first present their plan to create a large device that can be installed into a pool to assist blind and visually impaired swimmers. Following that, the active team will present their plan to create a small device that can be worn by a blind and visually impaired swimmer to warn them about obstacles. Lastly, the business team will present their plan to devise a business plan to start a successful start‐up business by using the device that the passive team is working on.
