Show moreA. The focus of the IPRO 344 iFidelity team for the Fall 2009 semester is to gather and analyze data from our audio system and further refine and improve upon the hardware and procedures developed in previous semesters. B. The team has set objectives of improving the audio performance of our kiosk, experimenting, testing and demonstrating the improvement empirically, establishing a frame of reference to compare our design to currently used intercom systems, and refining the kiosk circuitry and enclosure.

Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. As a result, there is need for efficient routing of trains throughout the Chicago area. One aspect of railroad transport that directly affects the overall efficiency of the rail system is how easily accessible train intermodal yards are for trucks going to and through the intermodal yards. With this in mind, the overall purpose and objective of IPRO 307 is to improve the truck flow in and around an intermodal facility at Harvey, IL which is owned by Canadian National (CN) lines. CN is one of the six major railroads that serve the Chicago area. The intermodal facility at Harvey is surrounded by a network of highways including Interstates 80, 57, 294, 94 and 65. Interstates 294 and 80 cross directly overhead of the intermodal yard. In order to make truck flow around the intermodal yard more efficient, IPRO 307 will look into the addition of ramps and frontage roads, including a ramp that would be based off of interstates 80/294. A ramp connecting the major interstate to the intermodal facility would allow for easier access to the intermodal facility by trucks, thereby bettering the efficiency of the intermodal facility as a whole.

Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab is to get the fourth level of machinery hall off the electrical grid. The IPRO is moving towards transforming the space into a research space for future energy and lighting technologies. Since the end goals of the Zero Energy Lab are ambitious for one semester we are proposing to address solar hot water, a golf cart used as a mobile battery bank, and window efficiency this semester. We are also hoping to learn some tuck-pointing techniques to make the space more presentable. We would like for the team to learn new things about the technologies we are researching and using. We hope to have a good hands-on experience with energy efficiency and green technologies. The team is a collaboration of students from various majors including architecture, political science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and biophysics. Together we believe we will be able to create a cohesive end product and work well together along the way.

Show moreThis research's purpose is to optimize an existing method to simulate stochas- tic integrals using Monte Carlo when the cost of function evaluation is dimension dependent. In the area of mathematical nance, we often need to price a path- dependent nancial derivative. This will result in the computation of E[g(B( ))], where g stands for a payoff function, and B is the Brownian Motion. A simple way to approximate this expectation is to take the average of the functional over a large num- ber of sample paths. Each path is approximated by a d-dimensional random vector. A larger d will provide a more accurate result. However, due to the limitation in time cost and computer memory, some large dimensions are not easy to be implemented. Therefore, we introduce the multi-level technique that is based on multi-grid ideas. It can be used to reduce the computational complexity for these kind of problems. Moreover, when we apply the multi-level technique, the proper sample size for each subspace integration needs to be computed in order to satisfy our guaranteed conser- vative xed width con dence intervals. Thus, the automatic sample size algorithm (two stage con dence interval algorithm) is used in conjunction with the multi-level method.

Show moreDo you love the zoo? Do you wish you could see all of the animals and learn about them too in just one easy visit? Our IPRO team is creating an iPhone application to do just that. We’re working with the Brookfield Zoo education staff and animal researchers to develop a guided inquiry process that will assist users in finding and identifying animals. Getting closer to an animal is a breeze. Because the animals’ locations are mapped, you can find them easily on foot or identify them by their color, pattern, and shape. Learn fun facts about any animal you choose while watching videos and scrolling through pictures. We’re working to create the best tour guide for the zoo that fits in your pocket.

Show moreRecreational fishing is a sizable market, generating over a billion dollars of economic output and providing well over a million American’s with jobs. There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook, treble hook and the new “Trokar”, which is “surgically sharpened”. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook usually solves this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal process. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water.

Show moreA method and apparatus for electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) for fabricating a thin-layer yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte on a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode substrate constructed of nickel-YSZ cermet. By reducing the thickness of the electrolyte, and thereby reducing the cell internal IR drop, an intermediate temperature SOFC (ITSOFC) can operate at 600-800.degree. C. A collar positioned at a distance from a discharge end of a spray nozzle enhances a spray pattern of a precursor including the electrolyte material and thus provides a very thin electrolyte layer.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company.

Show moreThe objective of this work is to develop mathematical models (using machine learning regression) that can mimic human ability to perceive motion of a small object in an image sequence or a video. The motivation for this work comes from the diagnostic cardiac imaging where a small deformation of a cardiac wall motion represents a signi cant diagnostic marker. First a brief overview of the state of the art in image and video quality assessment is given. This overview also points out a need for a new task based quality metrics which can better quantify, subjective, image sequence quality under various degradations, like blur and noise. Next a study is designed to measure human observers motion perception under various degradation models. Later, the results from this study are analyzed to detect which image sequence features are the most relevant for motion perception and the development of a mathematical model aiming to emulate humans. The chosen features are based on so called visual attention and estimated object motion. Since the computation requirement to calculate visual attention and estimated object motion are considerable we also present a fast parallel implementations based on graphical processing units using NVIDIA Compute Uni ed Device Architecture. The preliminary results indicate that proposed machine learning regression models with the use of the visual attention and estimated object motion can accurately predict human motion perception.
