Show moreThe purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 320 is to create an online professional network for school teachers at the kindergarten through twelfth grade level to allow for the sharing of ideas, lesson plans and other professionally relevant information. This is a continuing project which saw limited success in the previous semester in that a functioning web site was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers but it saw very little use. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the research generated last semester by performing additional market research with teachers. Following that, IPRO 320 will rework much of the previous web site by refining some of the features, adding additional ones as the research indicates and improving the website in general, both functionally and aesthetically.

Show moreC-ward is the neighborhood (in Mumbai) that was designed and developed around 1940 and thereafter there has been no or very little improvement in infrastructure, which has led to narrow street, unsafe pedestrian and limited open space. C-ward in one of the most prime real-estate location considering it right next to financial district , close to major train station and close to Shoreline. ROMF (Remaking of Mumbai Federation) has taken the initiative to develop the C-ward and the project site part of ROMF development area. City centers have always been source of density because of scarcity of land. The sensible and effective use of such land would be to build vertical (high-rise) and also to have the possibility of expansion for the future development. A mixed use high rise development diversifies the use of space within a single building structure. Combination of living, entertainment, shopping and lodging in single urban structure, helps to utilize the full potential of an urban site.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for 2016 Olympic Games and currently remains a strong contender for this title. If Chicago is selected as the Host City it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympiad participants including athletes, coaches, organizers, and media reporters. Continuing in the vein of last semester’s IPRO, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards in the Chicago area and to convert them into low-cost housing units. With proper foresight, this challenge can become an opportunity for the I P R O 3 3 9 City to demonstrate an attitude of sustainability that can serve as a model for other cities around the world to follow suit. The intense media attention directed towards the Olympic Games could be channeled to showcase our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible actions.

Show moreHamid Arastoopour in Chemical Engineering has developed and patented technology for processing scrap rubber from tires in an extruder. This technology breaks the chemical bonds that result in the rubber being vulcanized. This allows the rubber to be reformed into new shapes and re-vulcanized resulting a true recycling of the material into new rubber parts. Most other rubber recycling technology only grinds up the rubber. These technologies allow the rubber to be used as a filler but does not allow true recycling of the rubber. There is a tremendous supply of used tires are a significant environmental problem as well as waste of a potential resource. This technology could provide the means to effectively use this waste. This EnPRO will look at the issues and opportunities associated with commercializing this exciting technology. This will include an assessment of additional technology development that is needed, an analysis of the cost of implementing this technology, sources of scrap rubber, as well as the market for the recycled rubber. It will also look at possible ways to fund the development. The EnPRO will be supported by a business representative in addition to technical faculty.

Show moreThere are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back.

Show moreSpatially distributed systems such as reactor networks hosting multiple autocatalytic species demonstrate a rich spectrum of complex behavior. From a control systems perspective, spatially distributed systems offer a difficult control challenge because of their distributed nature, nonlinearity, and high order. Furthermore, manipulation of the network states may require simultaneous control actions in different parts of the system and may need transients through several operating regimes to achieve the desired operation. The lack of accurate and computationally efficient model-based techniques for large, spatially distributed systems results in complications in controlling the system, either in disturbance rejection or changing the operational regimes of the system. A hierarchical, agent-based control structure is presented whereby local control objectives may be changed in order to achieve the global control objective. The performance of the control system is demonstrated for several global objectives. The challenge posed is to control the spatial distribution of autocatalytic species in a network of five reactors hosting two species using the interaction flow rates as the manipulated variables. The multi-agent control system is able to effectively explore the parameter space of the network and intelligently manipulate the network flow rates such that the desired spatial distribution of species is achieved.

Show moreIIT’s core vision is built around the principle that no matter how good we get, we can always improve. As the University seeks to assert itself as a member of the top tier of academic institutions in the U.S., there are many ideas for improvement up for implementation. Among these ideas is the goal to make IIT the most sustainable, urban university campus in the United States. IPRO 326 (“A Greener IIT”) is based upon the idea that in order to accomplish this, we must improve the sustainability of IIT’s main campus landscape.

Show moreVehicle-to-vehicle communication system enables vehicles to share various traffic information such as road surface condition, real-time traffic congestion, crashing alert or weather situation. Thus, it has a great potential to improve traffic safety, mobility and environmental sustainability. To grant this great promise, information availability plays a critical roles. Accordingly, many previous studies have investigated statistic characteristics (such as mean and variance) of information propagation (such as speed/time delay via instantaneous transmission, connectivity, etc.) integrating traffic flow features. However, few of them are able to capture the information spread dynamics based on V2V. Motivated by this view, this research seeks to develop a discrete mathematical approach to capture information coverage dynamics built upon traffic flow dynamics, which is described by discrete traffic flow dynamics, i.e., cell transmission model. The approach is entailed by developed mathematical model to capture inner-cell information propagation delay and inter-cell transmission based on the proposed information-traffic cell transmission model. Show moreThe introduction of the robotics IPRO program in its few years has already served the IIT community some rather practical and innovative concepts of robotics. Through an impressive and beneficial advancement, the program has successfully carried on to the spring 2005 semester. The goals of the program remain simply a quest to advance the art of robotics in the IIT community. The stage has been aptly set by previous IPROS for higher and more substantial progression on this cause. The goals of the IPRO Spring 2005 team will be to create four prototypes of not merely user friendly robots but a sophisticated utilitarian bunch that would gain enough attention in support of the ultimate cause of the introduction of a robotics course. The Peppy, Roomba, Darpa and the Pyro are the four prototypes set for construction this semester.
