Show moreIPRO 303 begins its first semester as a project designed to enhance the operations of both coal-burning power plants and the Smart Signal© Corporation. When critical equipment fails, it sends a shockwave throughout an organization and into its supply chain. Smart Signal’s EPI*Center software solution enables companies to fill the equipment performance gap between current operations and corporate objectives through early, actionable warning of any abnormal performance.

Show moreThe Mont e Carlo (II IC) Method is commonly used to approximat e mult ivariat e integrals, which can be interpreted as means of random variab les. The IIIC method uses th e sample mean to estimate the tr ue mean. In this thesis, we focus on minimizing th e sample size in MC simulat ion needed to sat isfy the specified error tolerance. Based on t he algorithm proposed by [5], we explain that t he cost of reliable IIIe est imat ion depends not only on variance but also on kurtosis. T herefore, when we try to improve th e efficiency of MC simulation by reducing variance, such as with Importance Sampling (IS), we need also look into the change of kurtosis. We analyze the change of cost in terms of the change of kur tosis and the change of variance. For a special case of IS we explore how to find th e optimal density in order to reduce variance.

Show moreIn 1983, a group of students from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology began work on a project that described what a house of the future would entail. This team ended up winning the grand prize (10,000,000 yen) at the first International Design Competition held in Osaka, Japan because their creative and innovative ideas about how a house of the future should be built 22 years later, in 2005, IIT’s Interprofessional Projects program started the Sustainable Village Project, an endeavor to build a sustainable and environmentally-aware community on the IIT campus. Part of this project was to design the house of the future in such a fashion as would fit in with the Sustainable Village. Through use of research both in the 1983 House of the Future, as well as the House of the Future developed in the spring of 2005, this semester IPRO 301 – Back to the House of the Future had the task of establishing a system of ideas and concepts which could be globally integrated to change the way modern housing is viewed and approached by builders and residents alike. Instead of simply being a structure that disrupts the environment and depletes natural resources, the house of the future will allow for the building of units which can be integrated into the environment and are more sustainable and efficient. By developing a methodology based on next-generation design principles, key technological advances, and considerations for building regulations and human health and safety concerns, IPRO 301 will lay a universal framework for constructing Houses of the Future of all shapes and sizes.

Show moreA nodal apparatus for sending and receiving digital data in multiple data slots has a transmitter for transmitting a request for multiple data slots during a control minislot. A conflict resolution queue representative of nodal apparatus sending substantially simultaneous requests for transmission resulting in a collision in a minislot is maintained and stored in a memory. A transmission queue representative of nodal apparatus that have successfully transmitted in a minislot and can be queued for data slot transmission is stored in memory. The transmitter sends multiple data slots signals comprising multiple slots of digital data in response to the transmission queue. A receiver receives multiple data slots signals comprising digital data. A high priority transmission queue may also be stored in memory.

Show moreThe IIT IPRO 370 Crisis Management and Security Program (CMS) is in its fourth stage of development. The current goal is to further develop the capabilities of our web based program that can be used by organizations to assist when determining how well their crisis management plans stand up to different methodologies, assessments, and scenarios during the testing process. Also to start marketing our web site to attract a community of many users to assist in the growth of the CMS program. The initial grant for this project was funded by the Homeland Security Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center. Ms. Irene Rozansky, CEO and founder of R&A Crisis Management Services Inc. will be our sponsor to ensure that we develop a program able to test existing crisis management plans for companies, organizations, and individuals who lack a response ready approach in times of crisis.

Show moreHelping in Orthopedic and Prosthetic Education
Sponsorship: H.O.P.E.
The overall goal of our IPRO team is to create a curriculum and a program that helps all practitioners and employees better understand how to utilize and build upon their knowledge and talents in the medical work setting. This will be achieved by promoting the awareness of treatments available, organizing demonstrations and lectures to help educate others, developing a course load for an accredited student. By achieving the aforementioned, our IPRO team hopes to increase the availably of funding to help create public awareness as well as to increase the quality and durability of the products we produce. In addition, we hope to expand on the QR Code invented by the Japanese. With this invention, we hope to develop a low cost solution for developing nations to be able to have quick and easy access to maintenance instructions, use instructions, and contact information of medical professionals. With the QR Code, we hope that potential problems will be able to be solved on site, wherever one may be.

Show moreThe purpose of the Inflatable Greenhouse IPRO was to design an air supported structure that was cheaper than the current greenhouse solution. The structural support of current greenhouses creates shadows that prevent an even sunlight exposure for the plants. The other issues we investigated were the cost, size, thermal control, and pest control of current greenhouse designs. The majority of the cost for a traditional greenhouse goes towards the structural support therefore an air supported structure should be significantly cheaper. The basic greenhouse design is oriented towards human occupants and is subsequently quite large. If the greenhouse was instead designed to house the plants already in the ground, just for the months that they needed shelter to grow, the cut back in size would also greatly affect the cost. We also looked into the thermal qualities of greenhouses. The very nature of a greenhouse absorbs and traps the light and heat of the sun. Without a cooling system a greenhouse can overheat and harm the plants within it. The other problem we found with current greenhouses was the pest control solution. Most greenhouses use strong chemicals that require special training for use and safety. Even the “organic” solutions use natural chemicals in concentrations considered toxic. Our goal was to design a greenhouse that would address each of these issues with a cheap and practical solution.

Show moreIn this thesis, evidence for antiferromagnetic spin uctuations as the pairing glue in high temperature superconductors is presented through a modi ed Eliashberg analysis of experimental tunneling data of Bi2212 over a wide range of doping. In particular, the normalized conductance data of the junctions, from optimal to overdoped, will be tted at T=0K using d-wave Eliashberg equations where the spectral function is modeled after spin uctuation spectra seen in experiments. The corresponding real and imaginary diagonal and anomalous self-energy curves are extracted and compare well to photoemission experiments. This is followed by a temperature dependent Eliashberg analysis where the spectral function is now temperature dependent, based on trends seen in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. New results for temperature dependent self energy curves are also compared to experiment with slight deviations. Finally, the Josephson product is calculated as an independent check of the tunneling matrix used in tting the data.

Show moreIPRO 313 Advanced Systems Applied to Student Loan Rehabilitation Processes worked with the IPRO sponsor Financial Management Systems Company (FMS) to to design and build a student loan rehabilitation tool. FMS is primarily a collections company that is growing rapidly. Each year FMS receives accounts from private and government agencies and must collect from those accounts in order to receive a commission, their payment. The IPRO team had met with the sponsor many times over the course of the semester to gather requirements, map and layout FMS’ process model and in general have a better understanding of what FMS does. The team needed a better understanding of the problem and what the problem meant for FMS. FMS is in need of a tool that is able to track accounts over the course of their loan rehabilitation program quickly and effectively allow the tracking of trends over a period of time.
