Show moreIndustrial continuous processes may have a large number of process variables and are usually operated for extended periods at fixed operating points under closed-loop control, yielding process measurements that are autocorrelated, cross-correlated and collinear. A statistical process monitoring (SPM) method based on multivariate statistics and system theory is introduced to monitor the variability of such processes. The statistical model that describes the in-control variability is based on a canonical-variate (CV) stare-space model that is an equivalent representation of a vector autoregressive moving-average rime-series model. The CV state variables obtained from the state-space model are linear combinations of the past process measurements that explain the variability of the future measurements the most. Because of this distinctive feature, the CV state variables are regarded as the principal dynamic directions A T-2 statistic based on the CV state variables is used for developing an SPM procedure. Simple examples based on simulated data and an experimental application based on a high-temperature short-time milk pasteurization process illustrate advantages of the proposed SPM method.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 305 is to understand the usage of deep-rooted as well as emerging applications and trends that will drive internet usage over the next 3 to 5 years. These need to be personified in terms of various classes of users that will co-exist and the potential use by each. In a little over a decade, the internet has become a part of everyday life. What started with simple applications such as email, has expanded to providing Blogs, Social Networking Sites, streaming video content, low cost (sometimes fee) international calls and has evolved into massive e-commerce engine. {There will remain users who use the internet for simple tasks as email, while others will use it to get all their multi-media content and blogs with multitude of opportunities to monetize the same. } The overall increase in consumption (MB) as well as the need for ever-increasing speeds (Mbps) may require ISPs to embrace technologies beyond what is currently envisioned as the industry evolves from broadband technologies to wideband technologies. This change in the environment needs to be evaluated from the view of an ISP/ content provider like a cable company and the new technologies and capabilities it needs to embrace to ensure relevance in the ever-changing world.

Show moreFor the United States, substantial numbers of shipping containers must be transferred from one side of the country to the other. As the major highway and railroad crossroad, Chicago receives the bulk of this intercontinental inter-modal traffic, making it the third largest container port in the world. In many instances, containers are even moved from one railroad to another by truck, exhausting street and highway capacity. Meteoric growth in container movement is expected to continue.

Show moreA nonequilibrium statistical relativistic diffusion model (RDM) with three sources is applied to the analysis of charged-hadron distributions in Au–Au collisions at RHIC energies, in Pb–Pb collisions at the current LHC energy of 2.76 TeV, and in p–Pb at 5.02 TeV. The relative sizes of the particle production sources at RHIC and LHC energies are investigated in pseudorapidity space as functions of incident energy. The midrapidity source that arises mostly from gluon-gluon collisions becomes more important than the fragmentation sources as the energy increases from RHIC to LHC.

Show moreThe crossing number of a graph G, cr(G) is the minimum number of intersections among edges over all possible drawings on a plane. The pairwise crossing number pcr(G) is the the minimum number of pairs of edges that cross at least once over drawings. In the rst part of this survey, we deal with the conjecture that pcr(G) = cr(G), and prove that this is true for 4-edge weighted maps on the annulus. Moreover, we develop methods for solving analogous n-edge problems including the classi cation of permutations on a circle. In the second part, we de ne the generalized crossing number cri(G) as the crossing number of a graph on the orientable surface of genus i. The crossing sequence is de ned as (cri(G))g(G) i=0 , where g(G) is the genus of the graph. This part aims at the conjecture that for each sequence of four numbers decreasing to 0, there is some graph with such numbers as its crossing sequence. We come up with a particular family of graphs which have concave crossing sequences of length 4, but partially prove it.

Show moredistribution operation which will aid companies seeking to outsource logistics operations. However, the team’s main objective is to add a Request for Proposal tool to the existing model allowing companies to determine the effectiveness of outsourcing different aspects of warehouse operations. This team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically warehouse logistics pricing. For the spring semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Analyze existing model (Shipping, Manufacturing, Transportation, etc.) in terms of being user-friendly and effectiveness at accurately predicting cost versus revenue and whether the operations input should be outsourced. Refine the current model given the suggestions of a surveyed group, not differentiating the contributions of the IPRO students from the software users. Research costs associated with logistic processes. Develop a multi-purpose activity outsourcing tool for common use called “Request for Proposal”.

Show moreThe mission of IPRO 363 - Language Link is to develop a social network website that connects IIT students to learn languages, integrate cultures and build friendships. The basis for this solution is an online framework allowing students to build a personal profile, matching people based on common interests, goals, schedules, and other factors, so as to promote and improve language learning via natural every-day interaction and use of languages. The envisioned efficacy of Language Link is based on the theory of immersion, which is widely regarded as the best way to learn a language[1]. As the developers of the website, we will provide a matching system based on pairing algorithms in order to allow each user to build a relationship with a student most equipped to facilitate language learning, so that the immersion process can really begin. Language Link will not be designed to equip users with lessons, translations or vocabulary; rather, the site is envisioned as a social networking site connecting those that are interested in teaching, learning and studying languages. We plan to start off providing this service to IIT affiliates. As the project progresses we hope to extend Language Link to other city colleges as well.

Show moreIPRO346 will focus on familiarizing itself with British Petroleum’s (BP) wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for its oil refinery in Whiting, IN. Specifically, this IPRO will analyze the current permits and their stipulations regarding the amount of ammonia and total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater being dumped in Lake Michigan. Ultimately, possible methods and designs will be devised to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS remaining in treated wastewater. These designs will take the form of a process flow sheet with a computer simulation to model the designs. At the culmination of this IPRO we will have several different models for possible upgrades to the Whiting refinery wastewater treatment plant to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS in the wastewater entering Lake Michigan as well as a cost to implement each solution.

Show moreLicense Plate Recognition (LPR) is an image-processing technology, also known as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). This technology is very popular in fighting crime, locating stolen car, identifying parking-ticket and so on. In LPR system, the image is taken of the front or rear of the car and its quality needs to be enhanced for further process. With this enhanced image, first license plate region is located and extracted. Then character segmentation is performed on extracted license plate image. In this thesis, we use K Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm to recognize these segmented characters. Keywords: LPR, Plate location, character segmentation, Image Processing, KNN
