Show moreThe IPRO 347 team is being sponsored by Abrasive Form to lead the company into a paperless form of tracking projects. Abrasive Form currently uses a paper folder, which they call the “job folder” to hold all the important documents for completing incoming projects. This job folder travels along with the pieces of the project until the project is completed. Once a project has been completed, and the final product is shipped out, the job folder for that project is then kept in an on-site filling cabinet. So far this has led to several problems for Abrasive Form. As the company is increasing in size and completing increasing amounts of projects, they have had to dedicate a large portion of their offices to the storing of old job files. Abrasive Form keeps all of their completed job folders to ensure that all liability for the company is covered, and whenever necessary throughout the lifespan of completed projects in the field, Abrasive Form is able to prove that their work was of the quality that was requested. This has also lead to a lot of time being wasted by the employees of Abrasive Form traveling to the back offices where the job folders are held to look up information. The IPRO 347 team will be helping Abrasive Form come up with a solution to this very serious problem. The solution generated thus far is to scan all the documents contained within the paper job folders into PDF form, and use a digital filing program (such as Bugzilla which is a free open source program) to organize the PDF files into sub folders, and allow for quick referencing based on critical criteria such as the job number, part number, customer name, or part number. All this information would then be contained in a single server that can be accessed on any computer throughout the company through an internal network.

There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook and the standard treble hook. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook helps resolve this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal of the hook. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water.

Show moreIPRO 364: Ramovation has the great opportunity to assist our community partner, Save the Ramova organization, in the development of preliminary design and business opportunity assessments for the renovation of the Ramova Theater. IPRO 364 is a continuing IPRO from the spring 2011 semester. From the spring semester, the IPRO 364 team created a preliminary program for the Ramova Theater renovation. The preliminary program was informed by analysis gathered from three research methods: case studies on other theater renovations, survey responses from the Bridgeport neighborhood and surrounding colleges, and contextual studies on neighborhoods similar to Bridgeport. A preliminary budget for the renovation was also determined. To tackle the summer 2011 IPRO workload, the summer team will divide into several sub groups which include the Design/Clean Energy Group, Budget/Finance Group, Case Study/Survey Group, and the Interview Group. In the summer semester, the IPRO team will expand on the preliminary program and preliminary budget created by the spring team. The IPRO group hopes the output from the Spring 2011, Summer 2011, and subsequent semesters will assist the Save the Ramova organization in presenting Ramova Theater renovation ideas to key stakeholders and also help spur development on the Halsted St. corridor of Bridgeport.

The quality of the water used is presumed to be the major problem that the people face, but the real problem is the quantity of water supplied. Quite a few organizations have been engaged with supplying drinking water to the community, but still not enough to address the needs of all the different sectors of the community, especially irrigation. In order to increase the availability of water to the people, it is necessary that the people have alternative means of supply of water, and a strong sense of the value of water.

Show moreThe Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) is tasked with protecting the public’s water supply and improving the quality of water in their service area’s watercourses. Principal in this mission are the seven wastewater treatment plants that are operated by MWRDGC. The greater Chicago area possesses a combined sewer system (CSS) that combines sanitary sewage and stormwater runoff. Because of this CSS, water reclamation plants are burdened with not only processing sewage and sanitary waste, but also stormwater runoff. As a result there can be a large variation in water quality and quantity. MWRDGC’s newest water reclamation plant is the James C. Kirie Water Reclamation Plant, which was completed in 1980. This plant operates as a nitrification plant with no separate distinct denitrification process. It is important to note that no clearly defined unit processes such as nitrification towers are utilized at the Kirie Water Reclamation Plant. Nitrification occurs primarily in the aeration basins and is currently sufficient to meet water quality standards. However, because of the current regulatory climate, stricter standards on effluent discharge are likely in the near future especially with respect to nutrients. Stricter standards on total nitrogen in effluent instead of the current ammonia limits are one such expected water quality change. As a result of this expectation, modeling modifications and processes at a treatment plant can be a key tool in adjusting to evolving standards. Because water reclamation plants vary greatly depending on their technology, influent and processes, computer modeling provides a convenient way to assess how the plant will react to dynamic changes in influent quality and still be able to meet static effluent standards. Although computer modeling has been applied to water reclamation plants for some time now, there are no clearly defined or accepted protocols for this modeling. Combined with the variation exhibited by various types of water reclamation plants, often modeling protocols must be custom created for individual plants or types of plants. What follows is a study and simulation of the Kirie Water Reclamation Plant. Simulation was used to examine wet weather events at the Kirie Water Reclamation Plant. Wet weather phenomena were explored in step-wise manner to determine the relative effects of different perturbations in influent water quality and quantity. The results show the various effects in effluent quality depending upon the variable or combination of variables deviated. Deviations in temperature and flow dominate all other variations simulated and result in the largest effect on effluent water quality. Deviations of 50% to both temperature and flow simultaneously yielded an increase in effluent BOD and NH3 at twice and six times the steady state values, respectively.

Show moreThe IPRO goal was to design a process for the production of the biotherapeutic compound IFN-Alpha from Chinese Hamster ovaries. After the process design was complete, a process flow diagram showing the actual process and separation steps was created and finally an economic analysis of the market feasibility of the product was prepared.
