Show moreThe IPRO 326 Project aims at systematically testing both parallel and series vehicle configurations of the Hummer and HMMWV (High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) to find the optimum hybridization factor specific to each configuration. An additional objective of the team is to work in coordination with Ph.D. students to simulate a hybrid electric bus system that is scheduled to have practical implementations by the end of the year. All vehicle simulations and structured testing will be performed using ADVISOR, as well as other software packages available in the Power Electronics and Motor Drives Laboratory at IIT. Related work done by previous student teams shall be reviewed and integrated into this project.

Show moreMost of the existing large scale urban food depositories / pantries are based on a model of food production and distribution which has not changed in the last forty years. It is essentially the same model used by large private grocery chains, involving off-site food acquisition (either through production or donation) and dissemination to large distribution centers. In some cases, these distribution centers are then accessed by either individuals or organizations which truck the goods to smaller, local urban distribution points. In other cases, patrons are required to visit the large facility, which it typically in a less accessible location.

Show moreAn offset carrier longitudinal scan recording and reproducing system for television signals wherein an amplitude modulated video signal is derived from a television receiver and converted to an offset carrier with a full upper sideband and an attenuated vestigial lower sideband. A direct or offset carrier audio signal may be recorded on the same channel with the offset carrier video signal. During monitoring and playback, the offset carrier is heterodyned to a television broadcast frequency or intermediate frequency and coupled into the television receiver. The same receiver may simultaneously supply video I.F. and audio F.M. signals for recording, and monitor offset carrier audio and video signals supplied to the recording head to facilitate recording adjustments.

Show moreThe direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment.

Show more3 billion people cook their meals over open fires on primitive stoves inside their homes. Indoor air pollution from those primitive stoves kills 1.5 million people worldwide. Furthermore, indoor air pollution is fifth most costly environmental degradation issue in the Peru. Previous IPRO 325 classes have made stove for Peru. However, the stoves made from previous IPRO 325 classes did not work properly. The purpose of this subteam of the spring 2010 IPRO 325 is to improve the stove and help Peru realistically.

Show moreAziridinium ions are valuable reactive intermediates in organic synthesis. Regioselective and stereoselective ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions can provide various useful building blocks including optically active vincinal amines, amino alcohols and amino esters. Aziridinium ions are also involved in the biological process of anti-cancer agents. However, aziridinium ions are under-utilized in organic synthesis. In this thesis, we utilize stereoselective and regioselective ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions for synthesis of enantiomerically enriched compounds. Ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions were utilized in intramolecular Friedel-Crafts (FC) reactions for stereoselective and regioselective synthesis of 4-substituted tetrahydroisoquinoline. A series of β-haloamine were prepared as precuresors of aziridinium ions. The reaction conditions for ring opening of aziridinium ions for the FC reactions including temperature, catalysts, and solvents were optimized. Further, the reaction mechanism was studied to prove that the aziridinium ions were formed as the key intermediates during the intramolecular FC reaction. Intermolecular nucleophilic ring opening reaction of aziridinium ions was studied as a convenient method of carbon-carbon formation. Regioselective and stereoselective nucleophilic substitution reactions of aziridinium ions with indole analogues were carried out for the synthesis of optically active tryptamine analogues. The reactions proceeded smoothly to provide the tryptamine analogues in high yield in the presence of halo-sequestering agents, while the reaction provided the tryptamine products in significantly low yield in the absence of halo-sequestering agents. Ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions with malonic esters and Grignard reagents were carried out for the respective synthesis of optically active tryptamine analogues, γ-aminobuyric acid (GABA), and α-amine derivatives. The regiospecific ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions was directly applied for the synthesis of bifunctional ligands which have a potential use in targeted therapy and imaging of cancers. The novel bifunctional chelates with a shorter alkyl spacer C-NETA and 2E-C-NETA as well as the chelates with a longer alkyl spacer 5p-C-NETA were prepared. 5p-C-NETA was conjugated to a cyclic peptide c(RGDyK) as a targeting moiety for use in targeted radiation therapy. In addition, 2E-C-NETA was conjugated to a fluorescent dye Cy5.5 for theranostic applications. The experimental results indicated that the new bifunctional ligands have promising applications in the biomedical field. In summary, stereoselective and regioselective ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions have been successfully applied for the synthesis of optically active compounds such as 4-substituted tetrahydroisoquinolines, tryptamines, γ-aminobuyric acid, α-amine derivatives and the bifunctional chelators. We demonstrated that ring opening of versatile aziridinium intermediates is a strightforward and convenient method for the synthesis of various optically active compounds.

Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. Joliet, being so close, makes a great place as a depot to intercept much of Chicago’s goods, it is also far enough away to avoid further congestion in the city. Currently one hub exists in Joliet (Elwood BNSF), another is being developed (Centerpoint), and one is being proposed off of Lorenzo road. Our sponsor, Mi-Jack, has asked us to come up with solutions to make these freight hubs more efficient.

Show moreNew inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) measurements are presented, obtained with the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA. The results comprise (flavour) inclusive DIS cross sections as well as inclusive charm production. In the area of inclusive DIS, both H1 and ZEUS completed last year their high Q2 Neutral and Charged current measurements exploiting the large statistics from the HERA II running period. For inclusive charm production, H1 and ZEUS published a combination of numerous existing measurements based on various tagging methods. Among other things a precise determination of the running charm quark mass mc(mc) was obtained from the combined data.
