Show moreUnderground mining is a very high risk industry. There are many potential hazards in the underground mining these include fire, explosion, inundation, roof collapse, toxic gases, chemical pollution, etc. Over past centuries, in US alone, more than 100,000 miners lost their life in different accidents. The primary safety methods used in underground mines concentrate on the monitoring of the hazardous gases, fire detection and ventilation. Using advanced instruments and monitoring techniques have significantly reduced the accidents in the modern mines. However despite the advancement of these monitoring facilities, accidents still occur in underground mining annually around the world, and many miners were killed because they were trapped and unable to escape due to blocked of exit access. This thesis describes a new development of an emergency evacuation system in underground mines and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the system. It is expected that the new system will greatly improve the emergency exit methods and save more lives in the future. The new emergency evacuation system consists of vertical concrete mineshaft, high capacity mineshaft elevators, surface terminal and underground support structures. In addition, the study of numerical simulation was carried out to observe the ground response during excavation. A typical ground profiles for underground mining in south part of China was used in this analysis. The results selected from shaft excavation simulation indicate that fluid drilling method effectively prevents the soil around mineshaft from collapse hazard. Compared to soil strength, soil stiffness has a significant influence on the soil response induced by excavating shafts.

To determine the tension in the bolt during or after loading, polarized light is directed toward the photoelastic strip and reflected light from the strip is analyzed to measure fringe order. Show moreThe IPRO 326 Project aims at systematically testing both parallel and series vehicle configurations of the Hummer and HMMWV (High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) to find the optimum hybridization factor specific to each configuration. An additional objective of the team is to work in coordination with Ph.D. students to simulate a hybrid electric bus system that is scheduled to have practical implementations by the end of the year. All vehicle simulations and structured testing will be performed using ADVISOR, as well as other software packages available in the Power Electronics and Motor Drives Laboratory at IIT. Related work done by previous student teams shall be reviewed and integrated into this project.

The growing problems regarding the traditional methods of agriculture, and the rate of growth of the world population, the team plans to design a method to grow food more efficiently and economically in urban areas. Show moreProfessor Chapman has invented an x-ray procedure that greatly extends the technique's ability to diagnose tumors (mammogram improvement) and see problems in soft tissue, such as cartilage. He collaborates with Brookhaven National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Rush Medical College, and several other universities. The potential for enhancement of public health and quality of life through this technology is significant. The team will have the opportunity to analyze and help IIT pursue one or two different paths to commercialization. The current state of development of the technique limits its application to a high-energy beam line at Argonne. Thus, Project Path One involves developing a business plan for a service that would be created in conjunction with Argonne and accessed through the Advanced Photon Source. Project Path Two involves developing equipment that could be installed in a clinic or hospital. The first project can be implemented without significant technology extension, while the second project requires a technological breakthrough to reduce the size and cost of the equipment. The long-term impact will be greater for the second project, because of the potential diffusion of a system throughout the healthcare industry. The scope of the two project paths involve: (1) Understanding the capability relative to current technology; (2) Relating that technical advantage to a patient benefit; (3) Developing understanding of the economics of the alternatives; (4) Preparing commercialization strategies; (5) Performing market research; (6) Developing a business plan; (7) Creating an implementation plan for Project Path One; (8) Developing an equipment development alliance for Project Path Two; and (9) Developing a financing plan and product development strategy for Project Path Two. It is anticipated that the scope of this project may require it to continue over more than one semester. This IPRO team will find this experience highly rewarding, because of its potential for benefiting many people who require medical diagnostic imaging procedures.

Show moreThe IPRO 311 Team’s overall objective is to create a conceptual design and branding of IIT as an eco-friendly campus, promoting sustainability to students, faculty and visitors. IPRO 311 is sponsored by IIT Marketing and Communication Department which seeks to portray a message of the university’s accomplishments in the area of sustainability and future capabilities. Furthermore, this project is driven by the interests of two IIT trustees with an interest to enhance the visibility of the IIT Main Campus from the I-94 expressway and other challenging vantage points (US Cellular Field, Sears Tower, McCormick Place, 2016 Olympics venues, etc.) Disney Imagineering is project partner participating with the Team through brainstorming discussion assisting the Team in building the IIT Brand. Initially, the focus of the IPRO was the development of signage that could represent sustainability and be situated at a prominent location on campus visible to the public. After several class discussions, the vision of the IRPO broadened, to develop an overall campus sustainable conceptual design, incorporating signage as one of the elements. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable concepts. There are several interrelated objectives: (1) Build IIT brand awareness and campus visibility in ways that are aesthetically pleasing, exciting and memorable. (2) Create an eco-friendly, self-sustained project that promotes general awareness of activities within the university among students, staff, faculty and the community. (3) Play a leadership role in supporting Mayor Daley's vision for creating a ultra-green Chicago by 2020. (4) Create an IIT campus sustainability plan for future IPROs to build upon.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 320 is to create an online professional network for school teachers at the kindergarten through twelfth grade level to allow for the sharing of ideas, lesson plans and other professionally relevant information. This is a continuing project which saw limited success in the previous semester in that a functioning web site was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers but it saw very little use. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the research generated last semester by performing additional market research with teachers. Following that, IPRO 320 will rework much of the previous web site by refining some of the features, adding additional ones as the research indicates and improving the website in general, both functionally and aesthetically.

Show moreIn an age where sustainability and “going green” have reached an all time high in both the media, and in politics, new initiatives are being explored more than ever before. Many of these initiatives would require drastic changes both in the way corporations do business, and in the way average citizens live their lives. However, there are initiatives which require very little change in lifestyle and business practice, and potentially represent great savings to those who choose to implement them. Like its predecessors, IPRO 346 aims to raise public awareness of the recycling and reuse of condensate produced by air-conditioning systems. This condensate is a byproduct of all AC units, and is currently sent straight to the sewer. Studies conducted by previous IPROs have not only indicated great potential for this initiative, but have also shown a great deal of public interest. Unfortunately, they have also revealed government policies and city codes which greatly restrict the use of this abundant resource. The aim of IPRO 346 is to work towards a change in these policies through the demonstration of a viable system. Members of the team equipped with a model of the systems we propose will meet with public officials, and others interested in the system, demonstrating its potential in hopes of getting policies in place which would allow such a system to be implemented. The IPRO has two main objectives: the development of a prototype and model for demonstration, and the marketing of the idea through the use of both social networks, and presentations to anyone interested. It is the aim of this team, that the accomplishment of these goals will result in both public demand for AC condensate recycling systems, and public policies which allow their use.

Show moreTo improve the wear resistance of titanium and extend its service life, coating boron nitride thin films on the surface of titanium matrix was studied in this work. To obtain surface property enhancement, the samples were coated by isothermal sintering at 1000°C – 1400°C in a vacuum furnace for 2h, 4h or 6h. The microstructure of the thin film was investigated employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). To identify the composition of interlayers between BN and Ti, EDS analysis was run through the whole reaction zone. It showed that the BN was being consumed, titanium borides (TiB and TiB2), titanium nitride (TiN1-x), and solid solution of nitrogen in titanium (α-Ti (N)) layers formed at the interface between the BN coating and Ti matrix. Correspondingly, the XRD analysis indicated that TiB, TiB2, TiN, and α-Ti(N) phases were presented in good agreement with the EDS result. The layers grew fast in the sintering process which benefited from the fine grain size and highly oriented layers grown in the reaction zone. However, the well-known parabolic diffusional growth is only part of mechanisms for explaining the reactiondiffusion kinetics. The diffusion paths were obtained from the phase sequences at the interface between BN and Ti and thus could be represented on the isothermal section of the B-N-Ti ternary diagram. Moreover, the influence of the sintering temperature and the length of the actual sintering period on the layer sequences and thickness of the reaction zone were investigated. The micro-hardness test results showed that the Ti matrix with deposited BN thin films exhibited significant increased surface hardness. Obviously, the surface hardness xiii rose along with sintering temperature and holding time, and the hardness could be improved over 50%.
