Following the death of Frank Gunsaulus in 1921, Howard Monroe Raymond was appointed acting president. He accepted the permanent role 14 months later and became Armour Institute's second president. Raymond was an instructor and professor in the Physics department, having arrived on campus in 1895, and he served as Dean of Engineering for 19 years before becoming president - a role he continued while president until 1927. The building to the north of the field, a former residence, served as a cafeteria in the early 20th century before being converted to a fieldhouse in 1933, then an Armour Research Foundation magnetic recording laboratory in 1947. Show morePhotograph of the Main Building, designed by Patton & Fisher and constructed 1891-1893, and the other buildings on Federal Street (looking south). Main Building is located at 3300 South Federal Street, and was made a Chicago landmark in 2004. The campus' original heating plant was housed in the extension to the south of the Main Building. This extension has had its smokestacks removed, and now serves as a buildings and grounds storage space. Photographer unknown.
