Show moreThe Daya Bay reactor antineutrino experiment is designed to measure the last unknown neutrino mixing angle to less than 0.01 in sin2 2 13 at the 90% con dence level after 3 years of running. The fully commissioned experiment consists of three experimental halls, measuring the antineutrino ux from six reactor cores. The various subsystems of the Daya Bay experiment involved in reaching this ultimate sensitivity are discussed. With full physics running not scheduled until summer 2012, a fully functional near site with 40 tons of target mass can be used to measure sin2 2 13 to 0.08 at the 90% con dence level in less than 6 months of data taking beginning in summer of 2011. Early physics at the Daya Bay hall does not bene t from the a near detector to measure the reactor antineutrino ux. Understanding and predicting the reactor antineutrino ux is therefore extremely important for early physics. A method of predicting the time-dependent antineutrino spectrum at the Daya Bay near site using publicly available information is presented. Using the antineutrino ux predictions, early physics measurements involving fuel cycles and refueling shutdowns are explored.

Show moreThis qualitative study examined student, parent, and teacher responses to disclosure of mental illness experiences by middle- and high school-aged youth. Results will be used to guide programming designed to help youth with mental illness facilitate disclosure decisions, as well as to assist their peers, parents, and teachers in creating effective support systems. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) directed this study; CBPR teams formed from relevant stakeholders: middle- and high school-aged youth (with and without mental illness), parents, teachers, and other youth leaders created the focus group interview guide. Nineteen focus groups were completed with 103 participants, with six homogeneous groups; four were youth divided into high school and middle school cohorts with and without experience with mental illness, parents of youth with mental illness, and teachers. Themes were generated from verbatim transcripts using a grounded theory approach. Independent raters open coded responses and crafted a framework to organize responses based on response type. A summary of themes and concepts was provided to the CBPR teams for feedback, yielding the final set of themes. Positive responses were grouped into: Listening/Response Characteristics, Personality/Response Characteristics, Support/Solidarity, Acceptance, Confidentiality, Problem-Solving, Strategies to Create Openness, Asking for Help, Child Independence/Disclosure, Self-Disclosure, and Understanding. Negative responses were grouped into: Response Characteristics, Misperceptions/Misattributions, Harmful Behaviors, Disregard, Topic Avoidance, and Judgment/Blame/Punishment. Supportive and unsupportive responses varied among groups; however, negative responses to disclosure were scarcer than positive responses, suggesting a more positive environment for mental health discussions. Recommendations to aid in the effective support of youth who disclose their mental illness are provided.

Show moreV. cholerae is a gastrointestinal pathogen which causes extreme watery diarrhea and results in over 120,000 deaths per year worldwide. It is especially prevalent in developing countries that lack proper water treatment and in areas struck by natural disasters such as hurricanes. P. aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that is ubiquitous in nature, and increasingly found in hospitals burn wards, sinks, catheters and other surgical equipment. Both bacteria are developing increased antibiotic resistance through several mechanisms, with one of the most common ones being the formation of a complex exopolysaccharide matrix known as a biofilm. In this study, using metabolic inhibition, we determined that Na+-NQR is essential for the growth of V. cholerae and P. aeruginosa in both nutrient rich and physiological conditions. We were also able to confirm that inhibition of this enzyme, in both growth conditions, resulted in decreased biofilm production, subsequently eliminating one of the main mechanisms for antibiotic resistance of these bacteria.

Show moreIPRO 310 is continuing into its fourth semester of creating devices to assist the millions of blind and visually impaired people in the United States to swim independently and without sustaining injuries. Due to the size of the team, now and in the past, IPRO 310 divides itself into 3 subteams. The three sub‐teams are the passive sub‐team, the active sub‐team, and the research sub‐team; which this year has become the business plan/EnPRO sub‐team. Though we meet as a single IPRO several times a week, most of the work done outside of class will be in separate teams. Because of the great differences between each segment of the project, each sub‐team has devised their own plan. The passive team will first present their plan to create a large device that can be installed into a pool to assist blind and visually impaired swimmers. Following that, the active team will present their plan to create a small device that can be worn by a blind and visually impaired swimmer to warn them about obstacles. Lastly, the business team will present their plan to devise a business plan to start a successful start‐up business by using the device that the passive team is working on.

Show moreThe objective of IRPO 323 is to find and optimize a system to deliver drinkable water to communities that do not have easy access to water. Mainly in locating a water source accessible to the region based on geographical limitations. From there, creation of a system to draw out the water in order to meet the demands of the people based on their lifestyle. The system has to be easy to maintain, fulfill the water requirement, and is cost effective in the life of the design. However, in order to fully understand the system and its limitations a test model will be used. In order to accomplish this project in a timely manner each individual will have to learn, develop, and apply interpersonal skills, research methods, and coordination. The set objectives, therefore, are: Evaluate water sources and water demands of the target community Design a system for this community Research products and costs for system components Create a test model to better understand the system components

Show moreDr. Ophir Frieder and Dr. David Grossman have completed a draft manuscript for an introductory book on Computer Science. The impulse behind this book is dissatisfaction with the way introductory computer science is currently taught. To our knowledge, there has yet to exist a text that focuses on semantic and algorithmic issues, rather than purely syntactical. Most students get bogged down by the intricacies of the programming language itself, which hinders their problem solving development. This book, in contrast to its many predecessors, will use the Ruby programming language. The language offers some good pedagogical aspects and this is couple with the fact that it is also becoming extremely popular in industry (e.g. 37Signals, as featured in BusinessWeek). By using Ruby, the team aims to aid students in learning semantic and algorithmic issues rather than the syntactical problems they face when learning other languages such as C++ and Java. In Fall 2007, the IPRO developed problem sets with solutions for the book, improved its examples, and developed sidebars. This semester, the IPRO will focus on testing the book with students new to computer science
