Show moreThe project team will be organized into a technology development group and a business group to follow through on the accomplishments of two Spring 2003 IPRO teams (IPRO 327 and EnPRO 357). The SMS Technology Group will continue developing the SMS Strategic Management System, Versions 2.0 and 3.0, with significantly enhanced functionalities over Version 1.0, and with each targeted to different application environments. The computer architecture and software code has been written by a cross-functional, interdisciplinary team of IIT students based upon a commercialization model developed by Stuart GSB Entrepreneurship Professor George Kalidonis. Versions 2.0 & 3.0 will be parallel developed and will add significant levels of different functionalities. The SMS Business Group will continue developing a commercialization and financing plan for SMS Version 1.1: a web-based strategic management system designed for micro-businesses and individual entrepreneurs. This project supports a serious effort to raise private equity capital for a start-up that will be staffed by IIT students.

Show moreIn the construction industry, safety is obviously a big concern. Companies take many precautions to reduce the number of incidents that occur to reduce costs and save lives. As one of these precautions, construction companies purchase extra safety equipment to save the lives of workers to supplement regular required products such as hard hats. However, despite all of the safety equipment that is used, accidents still occur. For example, there was a flood in Chicago in 1992 which cost more than two billion dollars in reparations because a worker placed a wooden piling into the wrong place. Tyche Technologies will solve this problem by providing accident prevention technologies that use augmented reality (AR) to enhance the awareness of the construction worker. This additional information will let the worker know where key construction hazards are, such as the location of pipes and cables that run underground. Our team will develop a business plan and a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of this project and attract potential sponsors/investors. The business plan will outline the market and financial feasibility of this product as well as any other problems/concerns that we foresee. The prototype will demonstrate how an AR environment can be created and relevant information uploaded and displayed to a user.

Show moreGibson USA, Nashville, Tennessee, is a recognized leader in the design and manufacture of acoustic and electric guitars for the entertainment industry. Gibson has a rich and respected history that began with the design and manufacture of mandolins in 1894. Its innovations in guitars have generated tremendous market loyalty, and have helped to transform the music industry in partnership with generations of musicians. A great deal of interesting information about Gibson USA is available at http://www.gibson.com. Gibson USA is also a prominent manufacturer and marketer of aftermarket guitar strings and accessories through its dedicated facilities in Elgin, Illinois. At this time, the Gibson Strings & Accessories division of Gibson USA is interested in supporting an IIT IPRO team that would study the complex relationships between its products, manufacturing operations, marketing strategy and competitive position. Gibson Strings & Accessories, located in Elgin, Illinois, manufactures strings, amplifiers, pickups and other accessories. This IPRO project will concentrate on issues related to the acoustic and electric guitar strings manufactured under the Gibson or Epiphone brand names. This initial IPRO project for Gibson will give students great experience in working closely with its young and energetic management to review current operations and select an appropriate initial focus for the project. This may include developing test and measurement methods and equipment to analyze string performance across product lines and competitive offerings, observing manufacturing operations to identify factors that affect product performance, evaluating marketing and competitive issues that offer opportunities or challenges, and developing an understanding of the user purchase decision process associated with the aftermarket for guitar strings. Projects could also include fine-tuning an integrated Internet strategy for marketing guitar strings and accessories and supporting the dealer network.
