The method is illustrated by monitoring the operation of a pasteurization plant and diagnosing causes of abnormal operation. Process data collected under the influence of faults of different magnitude and duration in sensors and actuators are used to illustrate the use of HMM in the detection and diagnosis of process faults. Case studies with experimental data from a high-temperature-short-time pasteurization system showed that HMM can diagnose the faults with certain characteristics such as fault duration and magnitude.

Show moreThis paper provides an example of the application of Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) to complex internal suspersonic flows and demonstrates the relationship between ejector wall pressure and aerodynamic performance. Details of such jet mixer-ejector nozzles are relevant to jet noise reduction programs. Several ejector configurations with straight, convergent, and divergent side walls were used in our experiments. The side-wall that was painted with PSP was also instrumented with an array of 156 pressure taps connected to Electronically Scanned Pressure (ESP) modules, enabling simultaneous measurement of "true" reference pressures. The PSP results agreed very well with the "true" reference pressures and also provided a detailed map of the complicated pressure patterns that could not be detected using the pressure taps. Finally, we also demonstrated the direct relationship between ejector side-wall pressure distribution and ejector performance characteristics such as exit mean flow uniformity, pumping, and thrust augmentation.

Show moreThis paper provides a unique, detailed evaluation of the acoustics and aerodynamics of a rectangular multi-element supersonic jet mixer-ejector noise suppressor. The performance of such mixer-ejectors is important in aircraft engine applications for noise suppression and thrust augmentation. In contrast to most prior experimental studies on ejectors that reported either aerodynamic of acoustic data, the present work documents both types of data. Information on the mixing, pumping, ejector wall pressure distribution, thrust augmentation and noise suppression characteristics of four simple, multi-element, jet mixer-ejector configurations is presented. The four configurations included the effect of ejector area ratio (AR = ejector cross-sectional area/total primary nozzle area) and the effect of non-parallel ejector walls. The configuration that produced the best noise suppression characteristics has also been studied in detail. The present results show that ejector configurations that produced the maximum pumping (secondary (induced) flow normalized by the primary flow) also exhibited the lowest wall pressures in the inlet region, and the maximum thrust augmentation. When cases having the same total mass flow were compared, one found that noise suppression trends corresponded with those for pumping (per unit secondary area). Surprisingly, the mixing (quantified by the peak Mach number, and flow uniformity) at the ejector exit exhibited no relationship to the noise suppression at moderate primary jet fully expanded M-j (the Mach number that would have been attained under isentropic expansion). However, the noise suppression dependence on the mixing was apparent at M-j = 1.6. The above observations are justified by noting that the mixing at the ejector exit is not a strong factor in determining the radiated noise when noise produced internal to the ejector dominates the noise field outside the ejector. A network of more than five reactors hosting cubic autocatalytic reactions may potentially have more than 101 steady states and many distinct dynamic regimes, all for the same parameter set. This paper discusses how the static complexity of such systems can be measured to give a holistic picture. To achieve this, stochastic simulations were performed to statistically determine the bifurcation structure of the system, and the gathered information is summarized using a measure akin to fractal dimension. With this measure, the growth of static complexity is investigated as a function of the network size.

Show moreTwin jet plumes on aircraft can couple, producing dynamic pressures significant enough to cause structural fatigue. For closely spaced jets with a moderate aspect ratio (e.g. 5), previous work has established that two coupling modes (antisymmetric and symmetric) are kinematically permissible. However, the dynamics of twin-jet coupling have remained unexplored. In this paper a more fundamental assessment of the steady and unsteady aspects of twin-jet coupling is attempted. While we document and discuss the nozzle spacings and Mach numbers over which phase-locked coupling occurs, our concentration is much more on answering the following questions: (a) What mechanism causes the jets to couple in one mode or the other? (b) Why do the jets switch from one mode to another? (c) Are the two modes mutually exclusive or do they overlap at the transition point? Our results reveal, among many things, the following. (i) For very closely spaced twin jets in the side-by-side configuration phased feedback based on source to nozzle exit distance of adjacent jets does not fully explain the coupling modes. However, the 'null' phase regions surrounding the jets where the phase of an acoustic wavefront (arriving from downstream) does not vary appears to correlate well with the existence of the symmetric mode. When the 'null' regions of adjacent jets do not overlap antisymmetric coupling occurs and when they do overlap the jets couple symmetrically. We provide a simple correlation using a parameter (a) that can be used as a simple test to determine the mode of coupling. (ii) The switch from the antisymmetric to the symmetric mode of coupling appears to occur because of an abrupt shift in the effective screech source from the third to the fourth shock, which in turn causes the 'null' phase region surrounding the jets to grow abruptly and overlap. (iii) The two modes are mutually exclusive. Our results provide considerable insight into the twin-jet coupling problem and offer hope for designing twin-jet configurations that minimize damage to aircraft components.

The concept of phase plane analysis is generalized to include all orders of reaction rate expressions, a broader range of system parameters, and is extended to the case of autothermal reactors. An industrial hydrocarbon oxidation reactor model and an autothermal CO oxidation reactor model have been used to illustrate and to evaluate the analysis method. The approach presented here is appealing since the region of safe inlet temperatures is determined explicitly and the region of safe operation can be optimized with respect to the reactor design parameters.

Closing the glucose control loop with a fully automated electro-mechanical pancreas will improve the quality of life for insulin-dependent patients. An adaptive control algorithm is proposed to keep glucose concentrations within normoglycemic range and dynamically respond to glycemic challenges. A model-based control strategy is used to calculate the required insulin infusion rate, while the model parameters are recursively tuned. The algorithm handles delays associated with insulin absorption, time-lag between subcutaneous and blood glucose concentrations, and variations in inter/intra-subject glucose-insulin dynamics. Simulation results for simultaneous meat and physiological disturbances are demonstrated for subcutaneous insulin infusion.

Show moreUnder certain conditions, shock-containing jets produce an intense tone referred to as screech. Screech was discovered about half a century ago by Alan Powell in England. Here I recount developments in supersonic jet screech - from Powell's first observation in 1951 to now. During this period more than 200 papers have been published - many offering only incremental advances. This paper provides a concise screech resource including a historical perspective, a summary of recent developments and a critical assessment of the state of the art. Topics include modulation of instability waves by shocks, shock-cell models and screech frequency prediction models, unsteady shock motions and clues about their role in shock noise generation. also. detailed nearfield measurements and computer simulation methods now available are discussed. However, despite the advances, screech amplitude prediction remains an elusive but increasingly important goal not only due to concerns about sonic fatigue failure of aircraft structures but because knowledge gained by the study of screech can be applied to a variety of resonant flow situations, including jet impingement, cavity resonance, and closed-loop active flow control. Show moreThis paper examines a supersonic multi-jet interaction problem that we believe is likely to be important for mixing enhancement and noise reduction in supersonic mixer-ejector nozzles. We demonstrate that it is possible to synchronize the screech instability of four rectangular jets by precisely adjusting the inter-jet spacing. Our experimental data agree with a theory that assumes that the phase-locking of adjacent jets occurs through a coupling at the jet lip. Although synchronization does not change the frequency of the screech tone, its amplitude is augmented. The synchronized multi-jets exhibit higher spreading than the unsynchronized jets, with the single jet spreading the least. We compare the near-field noise of the four jets with synchronized screech to the noise of the sum of four jets operated individually. Our noise measurements reveal that the more rapid mixing of the synchronized multi-jets causes the peak jet noise source to move upstream and to radiate noise at larger angles to the flow direction. Based on our results, we have grounds to believe that screech synchronization is advantageous for noise reduction internal to a mixer-ejector nozzle, since the noise can now be suppressed by a shorter acoustically lined ejector.

SPM can also provide information to operators on how close a process is to non-compliance to product safety limits, and carry out periodic checks of sensor accuracy at high frequency. Traditional SPM tools such as Shewhart charts are not appropriate for continuous food processes because of autocorrelation in data. Four alternative SPM techniques are presented and applied to high temperature short time (HTST) dairy pasteurization. The study attempted to achieve compliance of the HTST process operation with the recommended Pasteurized Milk Ordinance by providing a margin between the alarm limits of the monitoring chart and the safety limits. Monitoring of residuals and parameter change detection techniques ave used for monitoring processes with autocorrelated variables. Hotelling's T-2 and residuals of canonical variates techniques are used for monitoring multivariable processes.

It has been previously shown that vibrational control of an exothermic reaction in a CSTR, introduced via oscillations in the input flow rate, modifies the dynamic behavior of the reactor and enables its stabilized operation in the unstable steady-state region. In the present paper it is shown that simultaneous vibrations in input flow rate and concentration lead, in addition to a reduction of the amplitude of oscillations in reactor temperature and/or increase in reactant conversion. It is also shown that the phase shift between the vibrations of the two input variables affects the behavior of the system as well as the amplitude, the frequency and the form of forcing functions.

Show moreA knowledge-based system (KBS) was designed for automated system identification, process monitoring, and diagnosis of sensor faults. The real-time KBS consists of a supervisory system using G2 KBS development software linked with external statistical modules for system identification and sensor fault diagnosis. The various statistical techniques were prototyped in MATLAB, converted to ANSI C code, and linked with the G2 Standard Interface. The KBS automatically performs all operations of data collection, identification, monitoring, and sensor fault diagnosis with little or no input from the user. Navigation throughout the KBS is via menu buttons on each user-accessible screen. Selected process variables are displayed on charts showing the history of the variables over a period of time. Multivariate statistical tests and contribution plots are also shown graphically. The KBS was evaluated using simulation studies with a polymerization reactor through a nonlinear dynamic model. Both normal operation conditions as well as conditions of process disturbances were observed to evaluate the KBS performance. Specific user-defined disturbances were added to the simulation, and the KBS correctly diagnosed both process and sensor faults when present.

Process monitoring, quality estimation, and fault diagnosis activities are automated and supervised by embedding them into a real-time knowledge-based system (RTKBS). Interpretation of multivariate charts is also automated through a generic rule-base for efficient alarm handling and fault diagnosis. Multivariate statistical techniques such as multiway partial least squares (MPLS) provide a powerful modeling, monitoring, and supervision framework. Online process monitoring techniques are developed and extended to include predictions of end-of-batch quality measurements during the progress of a batch run. The integrated RTKBS and the implementation of MPLS-based process monitoring and quality control are illustrated using a fed-batch penicillin production benchmark process simulator.

Show moreFundamental issues about the coupling of twin supersonic jets of complex geometry are examined. It is shown that screech tones from twin rectangular nozzles with double-beveled exit geometries can couple. Unlike coupling of twin rectangular jets of uniform geometry, the coupling here is more intricate because simultaneous multiple frequencies with a different spanwise modal structure are present. The coupling produces two frequencies, one of which is lower than the screech frequency of either jet. Although many coupling modes are kinematically permissible, the twin jets prefer two specific modes, and in some cases these two coupling modes coexist at different frequencies. Despite the geometric complexity we can effectively predict frequencies of tones from both single and twin coupled jets using the waveguide approach. It is hoped that these results and insights will assist those simulating screech for the purpose of tailoring shock-containing complex twin jets that minimize sonic fatigue failure of aircraft structures.
