Show moreThis project concerns design of a two-story building plus a basement to be constructed on a 60 feet wide by 120 feet long lot. The structure is located in Carbondale, Illinois subject to moderate-high seismic activities. The structure will serve as a museum of contemporary art. Our client is especially interested in having a design that would protect museum artifacts during a potential seismic activity. The suggested method is to use a base isolation system for the building. As a minimum, the following tasks are required: overall design layout for the building, architectural design of the building, structural design of the building, electrical and lighting, plumbing, fire protection and HVAC design, and addressing any serviceability issues.

Show moreThe IPRO team will continue to work with the staff from the Museum of Science and Industry to develop a prototype of a cardiovascular- mechanical function display of the changes in pressure and flow that occur at the moment of birth. The team will refine the previously developed computer-based display of the physiological functions in the pre-natal and neo-natal experience. The bench-top working model that demonstrates the closure of one of the fetal cardiovascular aspects will be refined as well. Students will work with museum staff to understand how the public interacts with displays and then field test the display in the Museum for feedback and further refinement. Multiple skill areas are required to carry out this project: fluid mechanics, materials, physiology, control systems, interactive design capabilities, all of which will enhance the learning experience of this interdisciplinary group. The team will turn over both displays to the museum curator at the end of the semester

Show moreMidwest Steel & Services, a growing company, needs assistance in expanding its business software and/or creating the means to provide a better real-time information. Improved cost controls, purchasing capabilities and job tracking are among the specific issues the company faces. Accessing and sharing the information emanating from these activities will enable the companies’ management practices to make better decisions and significantly contribute to business growth. The company's present software and internal processes are not sufficient to meet their current and future business needs. The company has asked for the assistance of IPRO 342 to improve this issue. The IPRO team will review the present situation and try to assess it. This assessment will come from both a systems review as well as interviews of Midwest Steel staff. We will periodically travel to the company to gather information about them and present our findings.
