Show moreThis article demonstrates the use of a diary technique in a construction setting. The advantage of a diary study over other methods for capturing subjective experience is its ability to capture the thoughts, decisions, actions, and emotions of individuals in situ – while they are working in their natural setting – at multiple points in time during an individual’s workweek. Hence, the diary method is uniquely designed to answer questions about group-level trends as well as individual behavior. The specific goal of the study reported in this article was to derive an understanding of the types of fast decisions and actions that are made following a workflow disruption and how the disruption impacts the worker’s state of mind. The analyses revealed that there was a group-level positive correlation between experiencing a disruption and initiating a fast improvised decision and action. However, some workers tended to improvise frequently when disrupted while others did not. The analyses also revealed that the workers’ emotions fluctuated throughout the week, and two emotions – determined and interested – tended to decline following a disruption. But, some of the workers also experienced increases in their negative emotions while others did not, suggesting that not all workers react in the same way to disruptions. Consequently, the diary technique provides a novel way to identify the impact of disruptive events on worker decision-making and performance.

Show moreThe primary purpose of the Interprofessional Project (IPRO) 330 team is to promote the study of mathematics and the sciences amongst Chicago Public School (CPS) students. We intend to achieve this goal primarily by enhancing the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu and by interacting directly with CPS students, educators, and administrators. The website, entitled Science Fair Extravaganza, is already fully functional thanks to the efforts of previous IPRO 330 groups. Our team aims to further improve and publicize this website. To improve the website we will be addressing suggestions given by CPS teachers and students as well as outside education professionals in an effort to provide a high quality and useful project. The success of our IPRO will be assessed by increasing the number of daily hits received by Science Fair Extravaganza and by positive direct interaction with CPS students.

Show moreThe IPRO 347 team intends to seize the opportunity given by Robbins Community Power (RCP) to improve the efficiency of the power plant. RCP plans to convert the facility from its original role as an incinerator into a wood biomass electricity plant. Working with RCP, the team will look at thermodynamic values to determine how to best utilize the excess heat generated from the boiler that currently radiates out the cooling towers. Additionally, the team will research and discuss possible solutions to be implemented on the 22 acre site. The intricacies that arise from the nontraditional nature of our plan require we split into two groups. One sub-team will look into exactly where the waste heat exists and the values of viable energy available in the form of steam or hot water. This team will seek interdisciplinary advice as part of the energy analysis. The second, but most influential, sub-team will predominantly be researching feasible outlets for the recovered energy. Some solutions they will pursue include supplying nearby greenhouses with CO2, providing on-site and local heat, and increasing the efficiency of the plant through drying processes.

Show moreThrough analyzing data from posts and about users, we describe how one particular Facebook group helps immigrants to the U.S. use social media to build a local community. As a preliminary study in intercultural communication through social media, we analyze one case, the Asian American Chicago Network (AACN) Facebook group, and uncover common topics users discuss and relationships between user tenure and various indicators of leadership and interaction. Our small finalized results from this preliminary project suggest that members of AACN likely use it (1) to build a professional network in the U.S.A., and (2) to reinforce and affirm their Asian culture and identities.

Show moreThis invention provides various biquinone and trimeric quinone derivatives. The invention also provides a method for synthesis of a multi-quinone compound including reacting a hydroxyquinone anion with a first quinone possessing a first directing group at a C-2 of the first quinone and a second directing group at a C-3 of the first quinone and obtaining a biquinone having one of the first and second directing groups at a C-3 of a first quinone monomer and a hydroxyl group at a C-3' of a second quinone monomer. The biquinone can be further reacted to obtain various biquinone derivatives or with a second hydroxyquinone anion to obtain trimeric quinone derivatives, including trimeric naphthoquinone derivatives. The biquinones and trimeric quinones of this invention demonstrate antiviral activity and can be used to treat viral infections, particularly HIV infections.

Show moreThis community center was designed to make connections between the different generations to create a truly united community, not just a neighborhood. Each generation has something that they can bring to others, but this rarely happens because each generation normally congregates together, which isolates themselves from the others. The community center provides opportunities to create these connections. These opportunities will be through Music, Fitness, Art and Education.

Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab is to get the fourth level of machinery hall off the electrical grid. The IPRO is moving towards transforming the space into a research space for future energy and lighting technologies. Since the end goals of the Zero Energy Lab are ambitious for one semester we are proposing to address solar hot water, a golf cart used as a mobile battery bank, and window efficiency this semester. We are also hoping to learn some tuck-pointing techniques to make the space more presentable. We would like for the team to learn new things about the technologies we are researching and using. We hope to have a good hands-on experience with energy efficiency and green technologies. The team is a collaboration of students from various majors including architecture, political science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and biophysics. Together we believe we will be able to create a cohesive end product and work well together along the way.

One sub-team will create a passive device, which uses a mechanical device to provide tactile feedback to the swimmer. The other sub-team will create an active device which uses special electronic devices such as a sonar based device to help guide the swimmer. These devices will be repeatedly tested and updated to help increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals exercise and further improve their quality of life.
