Show moreThis article describes China’s century-long concern with the professional ethics of engineers, especially a succession of codes of engineering ethics going back at least to 1933. This description is the result both of our own archival research and of “philosophical history”, the application of concepts from the philosophy of professions to the facts historians (or we) have discovered. Engineers, historians, social scientists, and philosophers of technology, as well as students of professional ethics, should find this description interesting. It certainly provides a reason to wonder whether those who write about codes of professional ethics as if they were an Anglo-American export unlikely to put down roots elsewhere might have overlooked many early codes outside English-speaking countries. While code writers in China plainly learned from Western codes, the Chinese codes were not mere copies of their Western counterparts. Indeed, the Chinese codes sometimes differed inventively from Western codes in form (for example, being wholly positive) or content (for example, protecting local culture).

Show moreAbstract A Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is an extra-curricular opportunity for science or engineering students in the sophomore, junior, or senior year to participate in academic research in much the way graduate students do. It is a way to introduce undergraduates to the excitement of real research. Because it also seems an easy and attractive way to integrate ethics into undergraduate education, working out how professors of engineering or science might actually incorporate professional ethics into an REU seems desirable. This paper describes one effort to do that with engineering students.

Show moreVinesh Kannan (CS '19) shares his experiences working as a data science fellow at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Vinesh worked on the team that produces occupation and wage data used by policymakers, hiring staff, job seekers, and researchers across the country. He helped improve machine learning systems at the BLS: automatically identifying problematic training data and classifying rare jobs. Vinesh offers advice for students who may be interested in applying for the 2020 Civic Digital Fellowship, a program that recruits university students at all levels to spend a summer working on civic technology projects with various federal agencies.

Show moreThis is a copy of a dataset - in English and Chinese - completed in 2018 looking at concepts of professionalism. Following on the Davis, Zhang survey of 2016, this study continues to evaluate the claim that China has a profession of engineering (as defined by Davis) with a larger, better educated, demographically different pool of two hundred and twenty-nine Chinese engineers, using more specific and deeper questions about “profession”, for example, by adding the investigation of competence (the discipline of engineering)—the perceived knowledge, skill, and judgment of the interviewees as evidence of one aspect of profession. The dataset includes a copy of the questionnaire in Chinese and English, as well as both the entire dataset of surveyed individuals as well as the data from individuals who were deemed to have enough experience in engineering to be included in the final data set analyzed.

Show moreOrganizations are organically grown, and it can be very satisfying to see them thrive under the right conditions and treatment just like their botanical equivalents. But, at some stage, if you're not cautious, they can uncontrollably sprout and spread out until one day they've begun strangling themselves and even others. Organizations are strangling by not responding to development. As new people enter, procedures that worked perfectly in the beginning with only one participant often get unsuccessful, sometimes painful. It's easy to spot the signs of stressful processes; increased stress, constant yet insufficient coordination, low levels of effort and resources, bottlenecks, e-mail congestion, repeated progress updates, expired tabs, dysfunctional rules, low productivity the list continues. With Business Improvement it becomes very critical on how we plan & what are the facts which we have derived from the initial analysis. In this article, we will try to cover different tools that can be used for analyzing & planning.

Show moreEffective use of the Requirement gathering is our greatest and most critical role. We need to communicate with stakeholders to make the best of it. The techniques mentioned here are mixed and for each project, the mix shall be different. This technique for gathering requirements is perhaps the most common way to obtain requirements from all the required techniques. This article also looks at how to run a Delphi session, Creating Affinity Diagram & Mind maps.

Show moreA flowchart or Process Flow is a powerful business tool. With proper design and construction, it communicates the steps in a process very effectively and efficiently. There are a variety of ways to make a flowchart. Initially, flowcharts were made by hand using a pencil and paper. Until the advent of a personal computer, drawing models made of plastic flowchart form outlines helped flowchart designers work faster and gave their diagrams a more detailed look. Flowcharts were initially used by industrial engineers to organize work processes such as assembly line output. Today, flowcharts are used for several purposes in manufacturing, architecture, engineering, industry, technology, education, research, medicine, government, administration, and many other fields. In this article, we will be looking at different types of Flowchart & their usages
