Show moreA tip on a catheter is bent to steer the distal end of the catheter by displacing a control fluid within an elongated fluid conduit to stretch one longitudinally extending side of the tip relative to an opposite longitudinally extending side of the tip. The stretched side bends about the shorter side with a radius of curvature larger than the radius of curvature for the shorter side of the tip. A longitudinal restraining means may be applied to the tip to assure that the tip always bends in the same direction with the fluid displacement. On the other hand, other catheters may be bent in several and predetermined directions by providing a plurality of discrete fluid control conduits and by establishing a fluid pressure differential in at least one of the conduits to cause its associated side to lengthen and bend relative to a portion of the tip associated with another control conduit. The catheter may be small in dimension, made inexpensively and restrained against expanding in diameter by a circumferential restraining means.

Show moreStroke survivors often experience long-term upper extremity impairment. This can greatly impair activities of daily living. The eXtension Glove (X-Glove) is a soft robotic device to aid hand therapy. It uses cables serving as external extensor tendons to assist digit extension and control digit flexion. Load cells are located on each motor to detect the force value of fingers. This paper provides a way to add a biofeedback function on the X-Glove and update the microprocessor to a PIC32MX795. So the X-Glove can establish a wireless communication transmit data with terminals, like PC. In order to display the biofeedback, a graphic user-interface is also developed so that therapists can optimize the therapy for each individual patient in real time.

Show moreLarge-scale spatially distributed systems provide a unique and difficult control challenge because of their nonlinearity, spatialdistribution and generally high order. The control structure for these systems tend to be both discrete and distributed as well and contain discrete and continuous elements. A layered control structure interfaced with complex arrays of sensors and actuators provides a flexible supervision and control system that can deal with local and global challenges. An adaptive agent-based control structure is presented whereby local control objectives may be changed in order to achieve the global control objective. Information is shared through a global knowledge environment that promotes the distribution of ideas through reinforcement. The performance of the agent-based control approach is illustrated in a case study where the interaction front between two competing autocatalytic species is moved from one spatial configuration to another. The multi-agent control system is able to effectively explore the parameter space of the network and intelligently manipulate the network flow rates such that the desired spatial distribution of species is achieved.

Show moreThere are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back.

Show moreSpring semester 2007, the Manhattan Group came to IIT seeking advice regarding the improvement of their paper shredder. The paper shredders are manufactured in China and sold across the world, including the United States, under the Royal brand name. Each year, over a million paper shredders are sold. Consumers want paper shredders that are quiet and long lasting and are available at the lowest possible price. The Manhattan Group has asked us once again, the students of IPRO 321 and Professor Maurer, for the fourth straight semester to seek potential methods and problems in their shredder. These include improving the sound reduction, the gear optimization, and other features. The MMAE lab and machine lab will be used extensively for gear, sound, and material testing and design. Software resources, sound measuring equipment, and EE equipment will be used as well. Potential legal and/or ethical issues will involve patents and idea ownership. Since this a sponsored IPRO, all discoveries will be property of Mr. Seth Lewis and the Manhattan Group. This potentially could be an issue where this IPRO will be unable to provide necessary information to the IPRO office regarding work and progress due to ethics.

Show moreSalmonella enterica has been frequently linked to the major foodborne disease outbreaks. The molecular mechanisms underlying this pathogen survival on the fresh fruit surface remain largely unexplored. In this study, the environmental factors that affect the survival of Salmonella strains on the surface of selected fruits were studied. Grape tomatoes (or cantaloupe peels) were inoculated in three separate trials with 1 mL Salmonella enterica serotypes Enteritidis or Typhimurium (approximately 1010-11 CFU/mL). Storage of grape tomatoes at 4 ℃ resulted in significant decrease in populations of S. Enteritidis; this trend was observed at both of the tested relative humidity with the D-value as 7.25±1.05 d and 7.28±2.34 d, respectively. At different temperatures, relative humidity only had marginal effects on the bacterial survival on the surface of grape tomato and cantaloupe. In addition, S. Typhimurium apparently survived better than S. Enteritidis on the surface of grape tomato. Furthermore, a transposonmutagenesis library with random transposon insertion mutants of S. Enteritidis and high-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the expression of genes rcsB and nlpD were hypothesized to be associated with the survival of S. Enteritidis on grape tomatoes. Inframe deletions of the two genes in S. Enteritidis were constructed by lambda red recombinase system and respective complementation mutants were also obtained for identification of the contribution of the two genes to the bacterial survival on the surface of grape tomato. Thus, this study provided microbiological and molecular microbiological basis to probe the roles of putative genes in Salmonella enterica survival on the surface of fresh fruits.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 348 is to first find a use for the condensate produced by air conditioners, and then to create a product that will recycle the condensate for said use. The first task for IPRO 348 is to collect information on how condensate is formed, its purity, and the amount that is produced by a central air conditioning system. The end goal of the IPRO is to have a marketable system that will collect and store the condensate produced by the air conditioning units and will then proceed to use the condensate in the form of cleaning water, irrigation water, and possibly various plumbing purposes such as flushing toilets. After creating a viable product, the IPRO team is determined to make the product scalable, expanding its market from residential to commercial industries. To fulfill this goal, the IPRO team has been broken down into subgroups which are each responsible for a different objective. The first subgroup is responsible for the creation of a device that will allow for the condensate to be collected and stored. The second subgroup is responsible for analyzing the collected sample’s composition and checking for bacterial growth. The third subgroup is responsible for setting the parameters and methods for condensate collection. The fourth subgroup is responsible for obtaining the condensate samples from various sites, as well as collecting environmental data. The fifth subgroup is responsible for beginning the marketing aspects of the project. As a whole, the IPRO team will determine how the project should progress.

Show moreThe goal of this project was to determine the feasibility of using the heated waste water from the Braidwood Generating Station for use in greenhouse applications. Though extremely efficient, the Braidwood Generating Station, like all nuclear power plants, still wastes two-thirds of all energy generated and pumps 1.5 million gallons per minute of warm waste water into its cooling lake. All of this thermal energy pumped into the cooling lake is wasted. IPRO 342 was looking to change that.
