Show moreRetroreflective glass or plastic beads have fluorescent properties when irradiated with ultraviolet light and are emplaced in signs in patterns indicative of alphanumeric characters, or embedded in a hot melt comprising road stripes or embedded in the road asphalt or aggregate during construction of the road, to provide effectively bright and clear indications of signs or the extent and direction of the road. The glass beads comprise spherodized soda lime, borosilicate, phosphosilicate or aluminosilicate glasses with low levels of rare-earth dopants mixed therein, such as compounds containing one of the rare earths, or lanthanides. The plastic beads may have fluorescent materials mixed therein, typically organic pigments or dyes based on coumarin and rhodamine or the like.

Show moreThe Communication Design Workshop is an IPRO and is cross-listed with this main campus program. The sponsor is Pace, a successful and forward looking suburban Chicago bus company serving a six county market the size of Rhode Island. The focus of the workshop is to identify factors that will help Pace retain riders. Retention is a significant issue as it has direct financial implications and Pace does not know why they lose riders. Communication issues may be part of the retention problem. Pace will share existing research with us — we will extend and supplement this work.

Show moreTwitter use has evolved from status updates to a broad range of uses from personal broadcasting to information sharing and conversations. A study was conducted to determine how Twitter is used for informal learning purposes. It was examined what kind of questions with a learning objective are asked, and under which circumstances these questions are answered. Questions were categorized according to question topic, type, structure and audience. According to the analysis, users most frequently asked for definitions and procedural information about technology, web, software and Twitter use. The questions with the highest answer rate were questions directed at individual users via @replies, and asked about definitions and other factual information.

Show moreIPRO 342 aims to create a workable test bed for a hybrid electric school bus. The initial work will include the planning and design of the test bed (carried out this semester), followed by the implementation and testing of the test bed (most of which will be carried out next semester). The goal will be to create a scaled model of the bus with correctly modeled electrical and mechanical systems. A parallel HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system with a permanent magnet electric motor will be used, and research by previous student teams will be utilized and expanded upon.

Show moreDuring the milling operations at an industrial steel producer like A. Finkl & Sons (Chicago, IL), a substantial amount of time and money is lost due to the fact that cutting inserts break and without warning. The goal of this project is to devise an effective means by which a cutting insert breakage event can be quickly and reliably detected, thereby minimizing damage to the steel and other cutting inserts, and also freeing technicians to attend multiple machines at a time. This increases the productivity of their operations, and it has the potential to save A. Finkl & Sons substantial costs per year in time lost in rework and prematurely broken cutting inserts.

Show moreThe purpose of this project is to show how a team committed to helping people help save the world can leapfrog today's best designs. As opposed to the tradition of minimum design standards that just meeting the building code, highest practical design standards are the focus. True sustainability is the goal of this project, including; Zero Carbon Emissions, Net Zero Energy, 100% Solar Power, 10 times the traditional design life, 1/10th the maintenance, rot proof, termite proof, fire proof, hurricane and earthquake resistant. The project team, using cutting edge technology, will develop all aspects of a start-up design and build company to promote High Performance Green Homes. This project will provide a great opportunity for IIT students to experience a challenging and interesting project and to significantly contribute to a better world.

Show moreGPS modules and tracking devices have influenced many advances in modern technology. The data GPS provides has replaced the map and compass, and can be crucial in many situations. Its current platform for use however requires the user to utilize a handheld device and direct his/her frame of view to a screen. In many situations there is a need to have eyes on and full awareness of surroundings, something that simply can't be done while holding and viewing a handheld device. To solve this dilemma, team Smart Specs has integrated ideas of GPS, heads-up displays, and datalink technology to form a design that will give the user full hands free capabilities. This device, worn like glasses, allows the user to track objects and even designate objects to be tracked, which are all shown through heads-up display.

Show moreAnion exchange membrane (AEM) stability is a long-standing challenge that has limited the widespread development and adoption of AEM fuel cells. It is essential to understand the mechanism of AEM degradation during fuel cell operation. There are multiple modes of AEM degradation, broadly classified as chemical, mechanical and thermal degradation. Chemical degradation is among the most destructive modes, and can be further sub-divided into nucleophilic degradation (induced by the hydroxide ion), and oxidative degradation (induced by reactive oxygen species). While the former has been extensively studied, there is minimal work on oxidative AEM degradation. The reactive oxygen chemical species produced during the operation of an AEM fuel cell have hitherto not been detected during operation. Given the high pH, it is postulated that superoxide anion radicals (𝑂2∙−), as opposed to hydroxyl radicals, are primarily involved in the degradation progress. The objective of this study was to confirm the 𝑂2∙− formation during AEM fuel cell operation and to monitor in real-time the rate of 𝑂2∙− generation in an operating fuel cell using in-situ fluorescence spectroscopy. 1,3-diphenlisobenzofuran (DPBF) was chosen as the fluorescence probe, the sensitivity of which towards 𝑂2∙− was evaluated by performing ex-situ experiments in a semi-batch reactor. We demonstrate that the fluorescence intensity of this dye selectively decreased upon exposing 𝑂2∙−. DPBF was then incorporated into an AEM (membrane was solution cast after mixing the dye with the casting solution), which was assembled into a fuel cell. 𝑂2∙− generation in an operating AEM fuel cell was then monitored via in-situ fluorescence spectroscopy using a bifurcated optical probe, when the cell was operated in H2/O2 mode. To confirm the impact of 𝑂2∙− on AEM degradation, independent experiments (without dye) were performed under identical conditions, under both H2/O2 and N2/N2 modes, and the ionic conductivity and ion exchange capacity were monitored to estimate degradation extent. From our in-situ fluorescence studies, we were able to estimate the rate constants and activation energy for oxidative AEM degradation in an operating AEM fuel cell.

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.
