- Dynamic and Contemporary Science Fair Projects for Chicago Public Schools (Semester Unknown) IPRO 330
- The primary purpose of the Interprofessional Project (IPRO) 330 team is to promote the study of mathematics and the sciences amongst Chicago Public School (CPS) students. We intend to achieve this goal primarily by enhancing the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu and by interacting directly with CPS students, educators, and administrators. The website, entitled Science Fair Extravaganza, is already fully functional thanks to the efforts of previous IPRO 330 groups. Our team aims to further improve and publicize this website. To improve the website we will be addressing suggestions given by CPS teachers and students as well as outside education professionals in an effort to provide a high quality and useful project. The success of our IPRO will be assessed by increasing the number of daily hits received by Science Fair Extravaganza and by positive direct interaction with CPS students., Deliverables

- Innovating Process Improvements in Manufacturing Operations (Semester Unknown) IPRO 304
- The purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company., Sponsorship: A. Finkl & Sons Co., Deliverables

- Designing Affordable Housing and Olympic Village out of Shipping Containers for Chicago (Semester Unknown) IPRO 339
- As the deadline for determining which city will host the 2016 Olympics draws near, Chicago, along with Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo is trying to prove that it should be selected as the Host City. If on October 2nd Chicago is chosen as the Host City for the 2016 Olympics, it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympics and Paralympics participants, including athletes, coaches, organizers and media reporters. Building upon the previous two semesters, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards all over the Chicago-land area and convert them into a more cost effective alternative to traditional housing units. Since Chicago’s motto for the 2016 Olympics is “the Blue Green Olympics,” which references the way Chicago prides itself in creating sustainable I P R O 3 3 9 solutions, our proposal would only enhance our chances of being selected as the Host City in addition to being a city that thinks “outside of the box.”, Deliverables

- Aqueous Flooding Methods for Tertiary Oil Recovery
- A method of aqueous flooding of subterranean oil bearing formation for tertiary oil recovery involves injecting through a well into the formation a low alkaline pH aqueous sodium bicarbonate flooding solution. The flooding solution's pH ranges from about 8.25 to 9.25 and comprises from 0.25 to 5 weight percent and preferably about 0.75 to 3.0 weight percent of sodium bicarbonate and includes a petroleum recovery surfactant of 0.05 to 1.0 weight percent and between 1 and 20 weight percent of sodium chloride. After flooding, an oil and water mixture is withdrawn from the well and the oil is separated from the oil and water mixture., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

- Controlled Nucleation of Protein Crystals
- A method for the non-photochemical laser induced nucleation in which short high-intensity laser pulses are used to induce nucleation in supersaturated solutions including protein solutions. The laser induces nucleation only in the area where the beam is focused or passes through, resulting in fewer nuclei than would be achieved by spontaneous nucleation. In addition, the laser reduces nucleation time significantly., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Doing What Others Do: Norms, Science, and Collective Action on Global Warming
- Does rhetoric highlighting social norms or mentioning science in a communication affect individuals’ beliefs about global warming and / or willingness to take action? We draw from framing theory and collective-interest models of action to motivate hypotheses that are tested in two large web-based survey-experiments using convenience samples. Our results show that attitudes about global warming, support for policies that would reduce carbon emissions, and behavioral intentions to take voluntary action are strongly affected by norm-based and science-based interventions. This has implications for information campaigns targeting voluntary efforts to promote lifestyle changes that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

- Harvesting & Beneficial Use of Condensate from Air Conditioning Systems, Summer 2011, IPRO 346: GanttChart34
- In an age where sustainability and “going green” have reached an all time high in both the media, and in politics, new initiatives are being explored more than ever before. Many of these initiatives would require drastic changes both in the way corporations do business, and in the way average citizens live their lives. However, there are initiatives which require very little change in lifestyle and business practice, and potentially represent great savings to those who choose to implement them. Like its predecessors, IPRO 346 aims to raise public awareness of the recycling and reuse of condensate produced by air-conditioning systems. This condensate is a byproduct of all AC units, and is currently sent straight to the sewer. Studies conducted by previous IPROs have not only indicated great potential for this initiative, but have also shown a great deal of public interest. Unfortunately, they have also revealed government policies and city codes which greatly restrict the use of this abundant resource. The aim of IPRO 346 is to work towards a change in these policies through the demonstration of a viable system. Members of the team equipped with a model of the systems we propose will meet with public officials, and others interested in the system, demonstrating its potential in hopes of getting policies in place which would allow such a system to be implemented. The IPRO has two main objectives: the development of a prototype and model for demonstration, and the marketing of the idea through the use of both social networks, and presentations to anyone interested. It is the aim of this team, that the accomplishment of these goals will result in both public demand for AC condensate recycling systems, and public policies which allow their use., Harvesting & Beneficial Use of Condensate from Air Conditioning Systems, Summer 2011, 346

- Single Well Stimulation for the Recovery of Liquid Hydrocarbons from Subsurface Formations
- Water is vaporized in an annular upper region of a subsurface formation into which borehole extends from the surface. This creates a substantially nonconducting dielectric in such region extending outwardly from the borehole. Such vaporization is preferably achieved by the application of electrical power to an electrode disposed in the borehole. Liquid is produced through the borehole from a lower region of the formation to cool the lower region near the borehole and maintain an electrically conductive path between the formation and the electrode in such lower region through which electrical power is applied to the formation., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent
