Show moreBackground: Transdiagnostic emotional vulnerabilities are suspected to underlie psychopathologic comorbidity but have received little attention in adolescent emotional pathology literature. We examined distress tolerance, anxiety sensitivity, and anhedonia as concomitant transdiagnostic mechanisms that account for (i.e., statistically mediate) the covariance between adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms. Method: Data on MDD, OCD, and the three aforementioned transdiagnostic vulnerabilities were collected from a community-based sample of 3,094 9th graders in a large metropolitan area and analyzed using mixed effects modeling to evaluate mediation effects. Results: Individually and when controlling for each other, all three transdiagnostic vulnerabilities mediated the relation between OCD and MDD symptoms both before and after adjusting for demographics. Conclusions: Distress tolerance, anxiety sensitivity, and anhedonia may be unique mechanisms accounting for comorbidity between OCD and MDD symptoms in youth. Longitudinal evaluation of these candidate transdiagnostic emotional vulnerabilities in adolescent OCD-MDD comorbidity is warranted.

Show moreOne intrinsic property of foods, pH, can affect Salmonella survival in high-moisture foods, but its effect in low-moisture foods is unknown. In this study, the effect of pH on desiccation and persistence of Salmonella was explored using two approaches. First, the pH range that affects survival in low-moisture environments was explored. The effect of acid adaptation in acidic low-moisture environments was also explored. Salmonella Anatum was grown on trypticase soy agar with 0.6% yeast extract (TSAYE). After harvest, cells were divided and one portion treated independently at pH 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 for 30 min. Both portions were then desiccated on a cellulose filter in a biohazard cabinet (23±2°C) overnight (24±2 h). After desiccation, cells not previously pH treated were resuspended in buffers at pH 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 for 30 min, and cells previously pH treated were resuspended in buffered peptone water (BPW). All suspensions were plated on TSAYE with ammonium iron citrate and sodium thiosulfate to determine surviving populations. In addition, S. Anatum was grown on TSAYE adjusted to pH 4, 5, 7, and 8. Cells were either harvested with buffer with the same pH of the growth media or with saline then treated at pH 4, 5, 7 and 8. All were desiccated as indicated before. Desiccated cells were stored at 20% RH at 25°C for up to 29 days. To determine the effect of prior acid adaptation on survival in acidic environments, Salmonella Anatum and Salmonella Agona were grown on agar with or without 1% glucose, harvested, then suspended in buffer at pH 4, 5, and 7. Each culture was desiccated on cellulose filters and stored at 30% RH at 25°C for up to 29 days. Harvested cells were also stored in buffers at the same pH held stored at 25oC for the same time periods. In addition, acid-adapted cells were harvested with saline, desiccated and stored as indicated for each type of cells on wheat flakes. Results from pH range finding experiments indicated pH did have an effect on the survival of Salmonella during desiccation. Desiccation prior to treatment will affect survival at different pH levels. However, prior pH adaptation did not result in increased survival under different pH conditions once cells were desiccated. Acid adaptation prior to desiccation at low pH adversely affected survival for S. Agona but not S. Anatum. Survival after desiccation at different pH levels was greater than survival in the same pH buffers. No advantage or differences in survival was observed with a commercial wheat flake product indicating results obtained in a model environment may be reduced or eliminated when food components are present.

Show moreThis study evaluates a measurement tool for public stigma of adults with autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability affecting individuals’ sensory experiences, behaviors, and social interactions (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Current literature has examined public stigma of ASD through qualitative methods and select attitude and social distance scales, consistently reporting lower levels of negative attitudes when disclosure of ASD diagnosis is provided (Gray, 2002; Hennegan, 2010; Obeid et al, 2015). Other research suggests adults with ASD frequently experience stigma and discrimination in their daily lives across settings (MacLeod, Lewis, & Roberson, 2013; Nicolaidis et al, 2015; Thibault, 2014). Previous research has not examined whether known processes of stigma (i.e., Attribution Theory, Danger Appraisal models) are applicable to understanding the stigma reported by this population. In the current study a commonly used measure of the stigma of mental illness (Attribution Questionnaire 27) was administered to determine its psychometric properties when applied to adults with ASD. Examination of a previous measurement model for this questionnaire on a sample of participants (N = 160) indicated lack of model fit. A larger sample (N = 306) was collected to determine the data-driven factor structure of this measure. A series of exploratory factor analyses indicates a three-factor, 24-item solution that displays strong psychometric properties, as well as convergent validity with other measures of attitudes towards disabilities and ASD. Results of this study suggest additional need to research the topic of stigma towards adults with ASD.

Show moreThe enacted curriculum and classroom artifacts of a full unit of instruction from three subject areas (biology, chemistry, and physics) at two levels of instruction (regular and advanced) were analyzed for the presence and degree of mathematics and critical thinking. These characteristics were selected from a review of the literature on college science faculty’s views of best student preparation. Classes were grouped and compared by subject area and by level of science class. Varying degrees of critical thinking and mathematics were found to be present in the six observed classes, but both characteristics were found in all of the observed units of instruction. Comparisons of the statistical and practical differences found the greatest differences when comparing mathematics by subject area. These differences were not due to within subject area differences. Comparisons found the greatest similarities when comparing critical thinking by level of instruction. It was found that classroom pedagogy was a more important factor than subject area or level of instruction in determining the degree of alignment of classroom instruction with respect to the presence and inclusion of mathematics and critical thinking. Overall, there was a common lack of explicit instruction in both mathematics and critical thinking among all observed units of instruction. These findings support the need for more explicit mathematics and critical thinking instruction within science classes. Also, it is recommended that pre-service and practicing science teachers are prepared with the knowledge and methods of best mathematics instruction to better incorporate these strategies within and alongside their science instruction.

Show moreSince 1991, the National Science Foundation has made three large grants to the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions at the Illinois Institute of Technology to offer workshops to help faculty integrate ethics into technical courses across the curriculum. We called what we were doing "ethics across the curriculum". This paper seeks to to explain what ethics across the curriculum represents, and what it does not represent. Namely, it is not morality across the curriculum, moral theory across the curriculum, social ethics across the curriculum, or professional ethics across the curriculum.

Show moreThe author discusses why he believes that Hurricane Katrina, which is certainly the biggest engineering disaster in the history of the United States, is not a good case for teaching engineering ethics. This is for three major reasons. First, there is the question of what happened. Second, there is the question of what part engineers had in what happened, which decisions were theirs and which belonged to elected or appointed officials who were not engineers. Third, there is the question of what part engineering ethics had, or should have had, in the decisions engineered did make. We lack any dramatic moment such as the Challenger Disaster provided, a moment when ethics mattered in a way that is both precise and interesting.

Show moreThis talk looks at how engineering societies can promote ethical practice and discussion about ethics among their members. After some remarks about how engineers commonly handle ethical issues that come up within organizations, especially in instances when raising ethical issues with managers such as the Challenger Shuttle Explosion, the author goes on to discuss how engineering societies can promote continuing education in ethics, hold roundtable discussions between engineers and managers, and promote open communication in workplaces.

Show moreThis is a copy of a dataset - in English and Chinese - completed in 2018 looking at concepts of professionalism. Following on the Davis, Zhang survey of 2016, this study continues to evaluate the claim that China has a profession of engineering (as defined by Davis) with a larger, better educated, demographically different pool of two hundred and twenty-nine Chinese engineers, using more specific and deeper questions about “profession”, for example, by adding the investigation of competence (the discipline of engineering)—the perceived knowledge, skill, and judgment of the interviewees as evidence of one aspect of profession. The dataset includes a copy of the questionnaire in Chinese and English, as well as both the entire dataset of surveyed individuals as well as the data from individuals who were deemed to have enough experience in engineering to be included in the final data set analyzed.
