Show moreInsulin is a hormone released by pancreatic islet cells that interacts with cells to increase their permeability to glucose. Diabetes is an illness that is becoming more prevalent around the world and is linked with either abnormal insulin production, or utilization or both in the body. Diabetes may be classified into two groups: Type 1 and Type 2 In an individual with Type 1 diabetes, the pancreatic ß cells that normally produce insulin are nonexistent as they have been destroyed due to autoimmune response. In an individual with Type 2 diabetes there is tissue-wide resistance to insulin and usually some impairment of ß cells as well. Therefore, although insulin production may be present its functionality is impaired. Type 1 diabetes is typically treated with frequent extraneous insulin injections, depending on the prevailing blood glucose levels of the individual; however, in order to determine the glucose levels individuals subject themselves to periodic finger pricks throughout the day which is often uncomfortable and stressful. Mechanical devices for insulin delivery, also known as “artificial pancreases”, are currently available in the marketplace. However, these devices are not only highly invasive and painful, but also must be sanitized frequently to prevent infections. As a result, they are inconvenient and many diabetic patients choose not to use them. The goal of IPRO 308 is to develop an automated, non-invasive artificial pancreas that will be capable of determining blood glucose levels and administering an appropriate amount of insulin into the blood stream while causing minimal discomfort to the individual.

Show moreRecreational fishing is a sizable market, generating over a billion dollars of economic output and providing well over a million American’s with jobs. There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook, treble hook and the new “Trokar”, which is “surgically sharpened”. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook usually solves this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal process. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water.

Show moreThe primary purpose of the Interprofessional Project (IPRO) 330 team is to promote the study of mathematics and the sciences amongst Chicago Public School (CPS) students. We intend to achieve this goal primarily by enhancing the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu and by interacting directly with CPS students, educators, and administrators. The website, entitled Science Fair Extravaganza, is already fully functional thanks to the efforts of previous IPRO 330 groups. Our team aims to further improve and publicize this website as well as to look into sustainability options for the IPRO and the website. To improve the website we will be addressing suggestions given by CPS teachers and students as well as outside education professionals in an effort to provide a high quality and useful project. The success of our IPRO will be determined by completion of grant proposals for the intent of sustaining the IPRO.

Show moreThe studio focuses on a specific project, but in an investigative and experimental manner. This semester, the project is a University Campus of a medium size, located in Dubai, UAE, currently under design in the College of Architecture, Illinois Institute of Technology. The class will be divided into three working groups. Group 1 was assigned to the main University Building, Group 2 was assigned to the College of Engineering Building and Group 3 was assigned to the Student Center Building. Every group will develop energy conscious concepts for the design with special consideration to integrate PV, wind energy and other applicable technologies. Each group will survey and conduct extensive research on traditional architecture that is deeply rooted in the culture and religion. The end result of each project is expected to consist of cutting edge architectural solution, which will help provide insight into methods for integrating environmental concerns into architectural design process.
