Show moreAn apparatus and method for precise angular positioning of an object. A first pivot arm and a second pivot arm each is pivotally mounted with respect to a base. A pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the first pivot arm and allows the first pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, within a particular plane. A second pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the second pivot arm and allows the second pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, and also within either the same plane or a different plane as the plane within which the first pivot arm pivots. Support structures maintain each of the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm within the particular plane or planes. An interconnect flex member connects the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm. With a relatively small base and thus overall apparatus, an input movement, such as a linear input of about 10 mm can be translated into an output movement of about 7200 radians.

Show moreAn energy-efficient method for killing noxious biological organisms (bacteria, insects, etc.) in contaminated materials ranging from liquid, semi-liquid, and solid foods pharmaceuticals and hospital wastes comprises passing the contaminated material through an exposure chamber; screening, comminution, addition of fluid or foam, limited heating, or other pretreatment steps may be required. As it flows through the exposure chamber the contaminated material is subjected to a nonuniform, high-intensity electric field; in that chamber, excessive current flows, including arcing and current "streamers", are suppressed by limiting the current density. The amplitude of the applied current density and the electric field in the exposure chamber are controlled, in accordance with the conductivity and/or dielectric constant of the contaminated material, so that the electric field intensity is of the order of 3,000 volts/centimeter or more.

Show moreSpam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) is a form of un-solicited communication whereby an attacker sends automatically pre-recorded phone calls to several subscribers for purposes such as advertisements of product and services etc. In the near future, SPIT is expected to become a threat inhibiting the delivery of voice services over INTERNET because of its technical and economic characteristics. In this report, we purpose a detection mechanism to identify SPIT callers. This mechanism transforms the problem of identification of SPIT callers to a data clustering one by mapping callers to data points based on some characteristics. These characteristics (features) are gathered based on signaling characteristics, caller reputation and call metrics. These features include modified SymRank, termination coefficient, strong tie coefficient and average call duration. These features distinguish between a normal caller and SPIT caller but cannot stand alone as shown in the Results section. The data clustering was done by an un-supervised learning algorithm known as k-means which clusters closely related data points. To test our model, we simulated a testbed since we could not obtain real traffic. The testbed was generated in java, while the actual clustering algorithms were written Octave. The results gathered clearly showcased the high efficacy of our model, as it had accuracy (>95%) in all tests. After comparing our model with other models proposed by fellow researchers, we realized that our model either surpassed or was comparable to the other models considered.

Show moreThis work consists of two separate projects unified by the idea to extend the Discrete Slip-Link Model, which has been being successfully developed in this group to predict rheological behavior of entangled flexible polymers, to new applications. The first project was dedicated to application of the Discrete Slip-Link Model to dielectric relaxation in order to simultaneously predict linear rheology and dielectric relaxation experiments of entangled polyisoprenes. Linear monodisperse, linear bidisperse and star-branched monodisperse systems were studied. It was found that all circumstances save one are well described. Namely, dilute long chains in a sea of short chains can be predicted rheologically, but dielectric relaxation data show a reduction in the relaxation time of long chains greater than that predicted by either the DSM or the expected Rouse motion. The second project was focused on the derivation of the exact free energy expression for semiflexible chains in the presence of entanglements in order to implement the DSM for semiflexible polymers. The special cases of chains with one, two and three strands are examined. An additional implementation of obtained results for one and two strands to buckling instability was performed. It is believed that in two dimensional case the critical buckling force is increased by thermal fluctuations in comparison to classical Euler buckling. However, how the critical buckling force is influenced by thermal fluctuations in three dimensions remains unclear. Some research groups calculate the critical buckling force approximately and conclude that, in opposite to 2D case, in 3D the force is decreased by thermal fluctuations. In this work the critical buckling force for semiflexible chain under compression was calculated exactly. It was shown that thermal fluctuations significantly increase the critical force over classical Euler buckling force in both two and three dimensions.

Show moreA system for producing variable amplitude pneumatic pulses, such as may be used to prevent flow separation on airfoil and diffuser surfaces to control stalling, utilizes a source of pressurized air which is regulated and fed to parallel outlet lines. Each outlet line has a control valve therein attached to a controller for activation of the valves. The first parallel line leads to an actuator which supplies the pulsed air to a desired surface. The second parallel line leads to the atmosphere. By cycling the valves at about ninety degrees out of phase, pneumatic pulses of large amplitude are obtained with a simple device capable of being transported on the aircraft.

Show moreThe powered resonance tube (PRT) actuator and its variants are new developments in active flow control (AFC) technology. The PRT is attractive because it has no moving parts and can produce acoustic tones that have amplitudes greater than 150 dB over a large frequency bandwidth. The first part of this paper deals with the resonance characteristics of the PRT as a function of the operating parameters such as jet-to-tube spacing (Sp), tube depth (d), and nozzle pressure ratio (NPR). It was found that: (1) at low NPR (3.33), the PRT resonates at discrete combinations of spacing and depth. (2) Using theoretical estimates for predicting shock cell lengths, one could observe a correlation between the theoretical prediction for shock cell length and the spacing at which the PRT resonates. (3) At high NPR (4.29), for a fixed depth, the PRT resonates at virtually all spacings. (4) The frequency at which the PRT resonates remains approximately constant, regardless of spacing. The second part of the study focused on examining the directivity of the acoustic radiation from the PRT-significant for developing orientation strategies of the PRT with respect to the target flow in the end application. The directivity of the fundamental PRT tone and that of its harmonics were studied for a variety of resonance frequencies, both separately as well as cumulatively. It was found that the fundamental part of the actuation signal radiated predominantly in the downstream direction of the jet for low resonance frequencies. As the resonance frequency was increased from 3 to 12 kHz, the directivity changed from downstream of the jet to vertically upward, and finally upstream of the jet at the higher frequencies.

Show moreSupervision of batch bioprocess operations in real-time during the progress of a batch run offers many advantages over end-of-batch quality control. Multivariate statistical techniques such as multiway partial least squares (MPLS) provide an efficient modeling and supervision framework. A new type of MPLS modeling technique that is especially suitable for online real-time process monitoring and the multivariate monitoring charts are presented. This online process monitoring technique is also extended to include predictions of end-of-batch quality measurements during the progress of a batch run. Process monitoring, quality estimation and fault diagnosis activities are automated and supervised by embedding them into a real-time knowledge-based system (RTKBS). Interpretation of multivariate charts is also automated through a generic rule-base for efficient alarm handling. The integrated RTKBS and the implementation of MPLS-based process monitoring and quality control are illustrated using a fed-batch penicillin production benchmark process simulator.

Show moreHigh initial cost is one of the major barriers for the nuclear power industry. Small modular reactors (SMR) may be a solution to this problem because they have a much smaller financial barrier. In this thesis, parametric cost estimation modeling studies have been performed for the SMR integrated reactor vessel (IRV) under a factory environment. Based on different prior fabrication experiences, three scenarios have been studied, and the corresponding possible manufacturing costs of the entire IRV and its subcomponents have been estimated. To explore the cost allocation, the total cost has been divided into five cost contributors: labor, material, tooling labor, tooling replacement, and other. The results have been analyzed and discussed.

Show moreIn one exemplary embodiment errors due to tape flutter are overcome by recording along with the analog signal clock pulses having a rate sufficient for sampling of the highest frequency component of the analog signal. Then on playback, the reproduced clock pulses control sampling and storage of samples of the reproduced analog signal. By reading out the samples from storage at a uniform clock rate, the effect of flutter on the reproduced signal is eliminated. In another example the recorded clock rate overcomes tape skew and other mechanical irregularities in recording and reproducing multiplexed analog or digital data.
