Show moreIon exchange resins contaminated with a radioactive component are treated by exposing the contaminated ion exchange resins to a bound radio frequency electric field for uniformly heating them to drive off water. The dried ion exchange resins are then uniformly heated by a transversely uniform bound radio frequency electric field to a second higher temperature which chemically inactivates the functional groups of the ion exchange resins to destroy their hydrophilic property and convert them to a stabilized product for long-term safe storage.

Show moreAn apparatus for generating odor upon electronic signal demand using a disk having an aroma-impregnated adsorbent and a substrate. The disk is inserted into a disk drive that receives signals from a user and/or a server computer. A controller within the disk drive supplies an electric, mechanical or thermal signal to the disk, resulting in the heating of the adsorbent. The controller may also activate a blower to distribute the scent produced by the heated adsorbent and to cool the adsorbent at the end of the scent distribution cycle.

Show moreA method for the construction and utilization of a medical records system capable of providing a continuous data stream of epidemiological data to the records system via kits provided to the symptomatic population to obtain and record an epidemiological profile in a searchable database by applying data mining or automated intelligence techniques whereby, when a valid epidemiological profile is established in the database, automated diagnosis and prescription of treatment may be had for patients presenting similar symptoms. Knowledge discovery techniques may further operate on the database to provide suggested courses of treatment for a virtual class of patients, epidemic threat awareness, and knowledge of drug resistance mutations by a pathogen without direct query of the database.

Show moreA water-containing region at or near the surface of the earth, such as a landfill, that is contaminated with hazardous materials is decontaminated by heating the region with bound radio frequency energy from a bound-wave transmission line excitor array disposed outside the region to a temperature to boil water and thereby increase the permeability of the region. The heating is continued by dielectric heating after water has boiled from at least a portion of the region to heat the portion to elevated temperatures substantially above the boiling point of water. The materials may then be rendered innocuous in situ in a number of ways, as by pyrolysis, thermally assisted decomposition, or reaction with an introduced reagent, such as oxygen. The materials may also be driven from the region, as by distillation or by evaporation and steam drive and then collected and disposed of, as by incineration.

Show moreModified scrap rubber particles, a method for forming the modified rubber particles and compositions including the modified rubber particles. The rubber particles are impregnated with at least one polymerizable monomer and polymerized to impregnate the rubber particles with a polymer. The impregnated polymer provides the modified rubber particles with improved properties which increase the potential uses for recycled scrap rubber. The modified rubber particles are useful in surface coatings, such as latex paint or powder coatings and can be used as a soil substitute.

Show moreA method and apparatus for spectrochemical analysis of a gas is provided in which the subject gas is mixed with a carrier gas and introduced into an analysis space between two electrodes. A continuous direct current discharge between the electrodes is produced which sustains a plasma formed from the carrier gas so that components of the subject gas are excited to luminescence. Characteristic radiation emitted by the components is then detected. The carrier gas has a higher ionization potential than components of the subject gas and, for example, may be a noble gas. The method is operable at atmospheric pressure. The electrodes may be either solid wires or tubes through which the gas mixture enters and leaves the analysis space.

Show moreThe invention disclosed is a process to allocate channels in a sectorized and tiered cellular network. A system of allocating cellular frequencies (channels) to the sectors among the outer tier of cells within a tile is disclosed which maximizes channel set usage within the tile while minimizing co-channel interference between cells. Any unused, or remaining, frequencies for the outer tier of that cell may then be allocated to an inner tier of the cell that has not had a channel allocated thereto. No additional infrastructure or maintenance set-up is required under this technique for allocating the channel to the additional transceiver and a very high degree of channel utilization is achieved.

Show moreAn implantable drug delivery apparatus including a housing that has a housing chamber. An outer deformable body having a reserve chamber is mounted within the housing chamber. An inner deformable body having a dispensing chamber is mounted within the reserve chamber. A dispensing valve is actuated to an open position to allow a fluidic drug to flow from the dispensing chamber, through the dispensing valve and through a catheter into a body of a patient. The fluidic drug is discharged from the dispensing chamber at a dispensing mass flowrate which is greater than a refilling mass flowrate of the fluidic drug passing from the reserve chamber to the dispensing chamber, when the dispensing valve is in an open position. When the dispensing valve is in a closed position, the fluidic drug is prevented from discharging from the dispensing chamber while a recharging amount of the fluidic drug is capable of flowing from the reserve chamber to the dispensing chamber, until the dispensing chamber is at least partially filled. The outer deformable body is normally forced or urged in a direction or manner that tends to reduce a volume of the reserve chamber.

Show moreA method for detecting a mass density image of an object. An x-ray beam is transmitted through the object and a transmitted beam is emitted from the object. The transmitted beam is directed at an angle of incidence upon a crystal analyzer. A diffracted beam is emitted from the crystal analyzer onto a detector and digitized. A first image of the object is detected from the diffracted beam emitted from the crystal analyzer when positioned at a first angular position. A second image of the object is detected from the diffracted beam emitted from the crystal analyzer when positioned at a second angular position. A refraction image is obtained and a regularized mathematical inversion algorithm is applied to the refraction image to obtain a mass density image.
