Show moreMalingering is an important issue in neuropsychology. A person can malinger both cognitive and psychological symptoms and it is important for a clinician to assess for this possibility as malingering invalidates test findings. Several embedded and standalone effort tests exist for the purpose of malingering classification. This study looked to assess the effectiveness of embedded cognitive effort measures as compared to standalone effort measures. Additionally, the effectiveness of a smaller set of measures versus a larger set was analyzed for both cognitive and psychological measures. The likelihood of a person malingering both cognitive and psychological symptoms was assessed. Lastly, exploratory analyses were conducted to assess for differences between malingerers and non-malingerers. It was discovered that the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition-Forced Choice and the Victoria Symptom Validity Test were poor estimators of malingering classification. Therefore, the cognitive effort measures included in the analyses were the Reliable Digit Span, Rey 15-Item Test, Word Memory Test, and the Test of Memory Malingering. Psychological measures included the F and FBS indices from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 and the Negative Impression Management and Malingering Index scales from the Personality Assessment Inventory. Findings revealed that stand-alone tests add a significant amount of variance to malingering classification over and above embedded measures in a cognitive test battery. The most effective set of cognitive effort tests included the Reliable Digit Span, Rey 15-Item Test, and Word Memory Test. The Test of Memory Malingering did not add significant additional variance to the classification of malingering. Results showed that a vii person is not likely to malinger both cognitive and psychological symptoms. Lastly, the F and Negative Impression Management indices were just as effective at classifying malingering as when the FBS and Malingering Index scales were also used. Future research should further assess the actual sensitivities of the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition-Forced Choice and the Victoria Symptom Validity Test. Also, research should assess whether different cut off scores for the Test of Memory Malingering lead to increased efficiency of the measure for malingering classification.

Show moreMuscular dystrophies are a group of genetic disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting. Most of the dystrophies are due to the anomalies in dystrophin or its associated proteins. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) is a vasodilator localized to the sarcolemma that acts in response to the increased metabolic rates during muscle contraction. nNOS localization is impaired in most Duchenne muscular dystrophies (DMD) cases. The nNOS is localized by both dystrophin and syntrophin acting together. The D16/17 spectrin repeats is the part of dystrophin that binds to nNOS. It was found that restoring the dystrophin nNOS interaction could ameliorate the effects of dystrophy in mdx mouse (mouse model for DMD). The goal of this project was to crystallize D16/17 in order to study the structural details of this polypeptide and its binding site to nNOS. The BL21 clones of D16/17 gene with a GST tag were cultured and lysed. Affinity chromatography was used to isolate the protein with the GST tag. The tag was enzymatically cleaved using thrombin and was purified from GST and other proteinsusing ion-exchange chromatography. Highly pure protein was obtained. The solution was stored in -800 C. Optimum well conditions for crystallization was found using the PEG ION-II crystallization kit from Hampton. Three well conditions were varied to find the conditions that yield best crystals.

Show moreThe transit station at IIT is mono-functional, lacking connections to place or programs that engage flows of people passing in and out of the neighborhood. Due to this fact, campus areas around the transit station become desolate and lackluster giving no motivation for people to remain at the station other than just to take train and bus. IIT’s campus lacks engagement with Bronzeville, although both the institution and neighborhood share the transit station. My proposal for these problems is to design a transit station and cultural complex that provides a social condenser for the larger community of Bronzeville. This will create a rich mixture of programs and amenities to be shared by both audiences

Show moreElectric power systems have evolved over the past century to the largest and the most complex cyber-physical systems. With the development of Smart Grid, cyber security has become an area of growing concern. False data injection attack has recently attracted wide research interest. This thesis develops the concept of load redistribution attack, a special type of false data injection attack. The physical and economic impact of load redistribution (LR) attacks is quantitatively analyzed in this thesis. Since LR attacks can successfully bypass bad data detection and manipulate the state estimation outcome, security constrained economic dispatch (SCED) based on the false state estimation would lead the system into a non-optimal or insecure operation state. Based on the consequence analysis, two different attacking goals are differentiated from the adversary’s perspective, i.e., immediate attacking goal and delayed attacking goal. For the immediate attacking goal, a max-min attacker-defender model is proposed to identify the most damaging immediate LR attack. Two different algorithms are used to solve this bi-level optimization problem. For the delayed attacking goal, a tri-level model is proposed to identity the most damaging delayed LR attack. This thesis studies the economic impact of LR attacks on power market operation. A convex model is proposed under the mechanism of virtual bidding to compute the optimal injection of LR attack, which gains the most profit from the attackers’ perspective. The quantitative analysis of LR attacks provides an in-depth insight on effective attack prevention with limited protection resource budget. This thesis proposes a new protection strategy, which intends to mitigate the most damaging effect of LR attacks on power system operation. The criterion of determining effective protections against the most damaging LR attack, considering the existence of stochastic measurement errors, is deduced.

Show moreThe quantum properties of a helix-like shaped QCD string are studied in the context of the semi-classical Lund fragmentation model. It is shown how simple quantization rules combined with the causality considerations in the string fragmentation process describe the mass hierarchy of light pseudoscalar mesons. The quantized helix string model predicts observable quantum effects related to the threshold behaviour of the intrinsic transverse momentum of hadrons, and of the minimal transverse momentum difference between adjacent hadrons.

Show moreDibenzothiophene (DBT) is an organosulfur compound found in petroleum that is refractory to the current hydrodesulfurization (HDS) method in refineries and raises the need for alternative methods such as biodesulfurization. Rhodococcus erythropolis strain IGTS8 naturally contains a dszABC operon, which encodes enzymes that can desulfurize DBT through the 4S pathway. Desulfurization-negative Rhodococcus opacus was transformed with plasmids pRESXdszABC and pRESXdszAS1BC, conferring the ability to desulfurize DBT. pRESXdszAS1BC had been modified from pRESXdszABC by placing a synthetic “sulpeptide gene” (S1) within the operon between dszA and dszB; S1 encodes a short polypeptide with high methionine and cysteine content, which puts additional sulfur demands on the 4S pathway when DBT is the only source of sulfur. Here we performed directed evolution on the two transformed R. opacus strains for 50 passages in a minimal (CDM) medium with DBT as the sole sulfur source in an attempt to drive evolution of greater DBT desulfurization activity. Desulfurization specific activity experiments were performed every 4 to 10 passages to compare the specific activities of these strains through the production of 2-HBP as measured by the Gibbs assay. Desulfurization positive strain Rhodococcus erythropolis IGTS8 was used as the control culture. R. opacus/pRESXdszABC demonstrated a maximum increase of 28-fold in desulfurization specific activity after 40 passages to a level as high as that of the control culture R. erythropolis IGTS8. Thereafter (passages 41-50), there was a 7% decrease from the maximum of desulfurization activity level (passage 40). R. opacus/pRESXdszAS1BC, however, showed only a maximum increase of 4-fold in specific activity after 37 passages. Moreover, there was a 61% decrease from the ix maximum of desulfurization activity level (passage 37) thereafter (passage 38-50). These could be due to the unexpected mutations and/or epigenetic changes in the pRESXdszAS1BC plasmid or host genomic sequences. Further DNA sequence analysis will be helpful in identification of these possible mutations.

Show moreIncorporation of iron into ferroelectric lead titanate with ABO3 perovskite structure is widely utilized to fabricate materials with ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order. These solid solutions exhibit room temperature ferromagnetic properties at iron concentration as low as 1 mole%. Iron (Fe3+) is highly compatible with titanium (Ti4+) in ionic radii and obviously incompatible in the valence state. Magnetoelectric coupling has been observed in 50 mole% Fe substituted lead titanate. The molecular mixing of precursor materials in wet chemical synthesis such as sol-gel has advantage over conventional solid state sintering in achieving higher solubility of the substituent. A series of Pb(FexTi1−x)O3− solid solution in the composition range x = 0 to 1 has been synthesized using sol-get route, followed by a moderate temperature (700 C) calcination. The structure and properties of samples were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), dielectric spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. SEM results indicated a gradual change in sample morphology, changing from individual particles to nano-aggregates with Fe concentration. EDX confirmed uniform distribution of dopants when Fe concentration x 0.3 and Fe concentration close to nominal composition with possibility of lead loss. XRD results indicated a rapid reduction of tetragonal distortion upon Fe substitution, Fe solubility limit of 10 mole%, and PbFe12O19 impurity phase formation at compositions x 0.4. XAS clearly indicated that Ti prefers a 6 coordinated distorted oxygen octahedra and Fe is surrounded by 5 oxygens situated at a similar distance. Other measurements suggested that ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ordering may arise in Ti-rich and Fe-rich phases, respectively. None of the samples below x = 0.2 was found to be ferromagnetic at room temperature.

Show moreAirfoils subject to unsteady freestream velocity as in the case of helicopter rotor blades and vertical axis wind turbines have been observed to exhibit very interesting lift behavior. Depending on the frequency of the oscillating freestream velocity, the uctuating lift amplitude can reach values as much as twice of that predicted by a quasi-steady approximation or as low as only one-half of that. Experimental data and analysis presented in this study provide the exact relationship between surging ow frequency and amplitude of the uctuating lift force for a range of reduced fre- quencies between k=0.1 and k=1.5. Furthermore, surface pressure measurements on the suction surface of the airfoil are used to supplement the measured lift force data and provide a measure of the level of unsteady ow e ects. Finally, experimental particle image velocimetry ow eld data is presented for the two surging ow cases corresponding to the maximum and minimum uctuating lift amplitude and is used to extract coherent ow eld structures which are related to the respective lift be- havior. Both the experimental lift force data and ow eld structures are compared to corresponding, low Reynolds number numerical simulation results.

Show moreThe accurate prediction of risky driving behaviors or possible accident and injury involvement contains several benefits as even minor increases in detection may result in possible avoidance of accidents and loss of life. This study examined the relationship between both broad and narrow personality traits and risky driving behaviors and the role of the bandwidth-fidelity dilemma. Based on archival data, 680 adults from a community sample in the Pacific Northwest completed the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) and a daily behavior inventory of act frequencies. Results indicated that broad and narrow personality traits are equally predictive of risky driving behaviors, but there are some appreciable differences at the primary factor level. Previous research, implications, and limitations to this study are also discussed.

Show moreThis work is an experimental study of high subsonic jet impingement tone suppression. We begin by documenting the characteristics of the impingement tone for various Mach numbers and standoff (nozzle exit to ground plate) distances. The results revealed frequency staging and the presence of two types of impingement tones. A novel feature of our work is the use of four miniature high-frequency actuators known as powered resonance tubes that were located circumferentially around the main jet nozzle. The powered resonance tubes were capable of producing high amplitude acoustic excitation over a range of frequencies, up to 17.5 kHz. Our target excitation frequency range was about 3-5 times that of the natural flow instability. Using high-frequency excitation, tonal suppression levels as high as 20 dB and broadband suppression levels as high as 5-10 dB were obtained. The mass addition rate from the powered resonance tubes was of the order of 2% of the mass flow rate from the main jet. Mass flow reductions could be obtained under conditions when the powered resonance tube resonated strongly. Our results suggest that appropriately designed miniature powered resonance tube actuators have potential for use in flow control applications.
