Show moreIPRO 313’s objective is to develop a data ticker plant for our sponsor Townsend Analytics which needs to meet or exceed certain performance requirements. The data ticker plant has to have a sustained optimal throughput of three million price quotes per second and minimize latency while maintain specific constraints. The ticker plant aggregates streaming data for numerous global financial markets and disseminates the data to thousand of users in real time. The data is used in Townsend Analytics’ RealTick® Execution Management System (EMS), its flagship institutional product for the financial services industry. Thus, timely and accurate data delivery is a critical component to Townsend’s product and competitive position. Through research and development, the group will have a concept of design, prototype development and benchmark testing. Additionally, the groundwork will be laid for future development of the ticker plant and additional trading-platform components.

Show moreManhattan’s expansion is limited by its context; for decades its growth has been upward and inward. It fills the remaining gaps and leftover spaces in its own fabric. As time presses on, this layered context grows in density, accumulating a thickness around the alley, the fire escape, and the rooftop. By resisting the city’s tendency to stifle, one can gather these moments of Manhattan’s past, and channel the interplay of space and narrative.

Show moreOne of the most common energy conservative measures used is designing an air-tight and a well-insulated envelope. While there is an abundance of high-efficiency building envelope designs in the market which offer low thermal conductivity and high R-values as well as various studies on the thermal performance of various wall constructions, the results were often based on simplified study model and are not incompliance with the current building code. Most studies also focus on only one particular climate zone and one type of wall construction. This research aims to examine the thermal performance of different types of wall construction based on the traditional building envelope design materials in various climate zones based on insulation and air cavity placements on a non-simplified reference model that is used for construction. Study models developed are incompliance with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers [ASHRAE] 90.1-2010 based on U.S. Department of Energy [DOE] Commercial Prototype Building Model. The thermal performance of the wall will be determined using two different methods. The first method will be using Building Energy Modeling [BEM] software where the exterior wall construction will be modified based on DOE reference models where the results for the overall annual energy consumption [AEC] will be compared. AEC results showed small differences between study models which are negligible. The second method is the Total Thermal Constant [TTC] method, where the thermal lag will be compared. The building structures that will be used are a steel-framed structure which represents a medium office and a wood-framed structure which represents a quick service restaurant. TTC results were able to determine the least favorable study model.

Show moreThe team of IPRO 339’s main objective is to assist Burgess-Norton Manufacturing Company with eliminating a persisting problem that has been affecting the company for many years. Burgess-Norton Manufacturing Company is the world’s largest manufacturer of piston pins, as well as the leading producer of powder metal parts. Supplying many major car companies across the world, Burgess-Norton thrives on maintaining a high standard of quality in both their products and services. Recently there has been a change in the automobile industry that has affected the way piston pins are manufactured. These changes have brought on difficulties for the company as they must now change their product specs and adapt to the evolving market. Their main problem is the existence of nicks on the piston pins. The main goal of this IPRO team is to find a way to eliminate these nicks that occur throughout the company’s manufacturing process. This document will outline the main objectives and tasks that the team has been assigned with. Team structures, time lines and other plans are included. Also, a further company history and description of Burgess-Norton will be provided in order to make the objectives more clear.

Show moreAn integrated online multivariate statistical process monitoring (MSPM), quality prediction, and fault diagnosis framework is developed for batch processes. Batch data from I batches, with J process variables measured at K time points generate a three-way array of size I x K x J. Unfolding this three-way array into a two-way matrix of size IK x J by preserving the variable direction is advantageous for developing online MSPM methods because it does not require estimation of future portions of new batches. Two different multiway partial least squares (MPLS) models are developed. The first model (MPLSV) is developed between the data matrix (IK x J) and the local batch time (or an indicator variable) for online MSPM. The second model (MPLSB) is developed between the rearranged data matrix in the batch direction (I x KJ) and the final quality matrix for online prediction of end-of-batch quality. The problem of discontinuity in process variable measurements due to operation switching (or moving to a different phase) that causes problems in alignment and modeling is addressed. Control limits on variable contribution plots are used to improve fault diagnosis capabilities of the MSPM framework. Case studies from a simulated fed-batch penicillin fermentation illustrate the implementation of the methodology.

Show moreThe team working on this project has set itself three major objectives. Firstly it strives to create a comprehensive and in-depth database containing valuable information concerning sustainability. This database should be user-friendly and intuitively presented so people who are interested in sustainability are quickly educated with the key points and have easy access to relevant and high quality references and further readings. The second objective of this project essentially consists of creating a roadmap and master plan on how to make Illinois Institute of Technology’s (IIT) Main Campus sustainable. This will be done by auditing and then benchmarking IIT to other similar projects. This roadmap and master plan will be developed with the vision that once implemented IIT will be a leader in sustainability and encourage many others to follow our track. Lastly the third objective is to create a house of the future. The house of the future has many objectives for itself. It should incorporate current design possibilities and make use of various available technologies to be sustainable and energy efficient among other things. This house should attract the public and educate them how easily sustainability can be achieved using current technology and knowledge at a competitive price.

Show moreThis thesis proposes a unified boundary control law for DC-DC converters (Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost) which improves both the transient and steady state response in comparison to boundary control laws using first or second order switching surface. A new set of switching zones on normalized state plane are defined to decide switching behavior every sample period. Additionally, non-ideal operations and a parameter self-adaptive algorithm are proposed and verified in simulation. The parameter self-adaptive algorithm enhances the system robustness and reduces the parameter sensitivity. The transient bandwidth for the load disturbance rejection and command tracking approaches the physical limits of DC-DC converters. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the major benefits of the proposed uni ed boundary control law.

Show moreHowell Mountain is a distinct and unique location in the heart of Napa Valley California. The 45 acres site rests on the mountain’s south west slopes and is planted with high quality grapes used in the production of red wine. When the fog rolls off the ocean and into the Napa Valley, the weather on Howell Mountain is generally sunny and cool. The appellation owes its distinctive climate to the fact that it is positioned high above the valley floor. The program includes both the wine production facilities and the hospitality facilities for visitors. The driving concept of the project is to merge those two, often opposing, programmatic elements. From west to east, the site has a 43% grade change. By designing a gravity flow winery, this facility can take advantage of that significant slope.

Show moreIPRO 340 (The Idea Fermentors) is working with Rock Bottom Brewery to determine alternative uses for the spent grain the brewery produces. Over 1,000 pounds of spent grain are produced at each of the three area locations weekly. Spent grain has many applications because of its high content of protein and fiber. Applications range from production of bio-plastics and bio-fuel, to agricultural uses as animal feed and compost material, to reuse as food for people. A major issue that Rock Bottom Brewery faces is that spent grain spoils very quickly, so alternative uses of spent grain must happen within a matter of days. IPRO 340 will determine what will be the best use of Rock Bottom Brewery’s spent grain in terms of logistics, cost, practicality, and environmental impact. The Idea Fermentors will lean and understand the brewery process and various applications for spent grain, as it pertains to Rock Bottom Brewery. The team will work together to accomplish project requirements as set forth by the IPRO office at IIT on time as well as satisfy the sponsor company’s needs.
