Show moreThis project is a Major League Soccer stadium in Phoenix, AZ. It is built with the intention to provide both a place for sports entertainment and a landmark unique to a neighborhood of Pheonix. It incoporates local architectural practices, cultural references, and Olympic stadium design standards in order to create a site-specific architecture for sport. Show less

Show moreA method of electromagnetic heating in situ recovers liquid hydrocarbons from an oil shale formation containing kerogen in an inorganic matrix where the formation is substantially impermeable to fluids under native conditions. A block of the oil shale formation is substantially uniformly heated in situ with electromagnetic power to a temperature of about 275.degree. C. where there is pyrolysis of a portion of the kerogen to gas and shale oil at a pressure sufficient to overcome the capillary pressure of the shale oil in the matrix, thereby providing substantial fluid permeability to the formation. The gas thereupon escaping from said block and the shale oil driven thereby are recovered, thereby further increasing the permeability of the formation. The magnitude of the electromagnetic power is controlled to raise the temperature of the block relatively slowly to increase the rate of pyrolysis of the kerogen as the permeability of the formation increases to produce gas at pressures above the necessary to overcome the capillary pressure and below that at which there is substantial escape of the gas bypassing shale oil within the formation rather than driving the oil before it. Show moreA spirometer for measuring fluid flow, particularly associated with exhalation of respiratory patients. The spirometer of this invention preferably has a fluidic oscillator wherein the fluid oscillates within a chamber of the fluidic oscillator. An oscillation frequency of the fluid flow within the chamber is correlated to a flow rate. A computer is used to process input data, such as data representing frequency of the oscillatory flow within the chamber, to a flow rate passing through the spirometer. The spirometer of this invention may have no moving parts, which results in the need for only a design calibration and no periodic calibrations throughout use of the spirometer. Show moreAn apparatus and method for coating micron-sized or sub-micron-sized particles such as living cells. The coating apparatus includes an encapsulation chamber enclosing a two-layer water-oil system for coating each islet cell with an aqueous polymeric coat. Islets together with an aqueous polymer solution are fed by a feed device that utilizes the principle of hydrodynamic focusing in order to ensure encapsulation of individual islets. The polymer in the aqueous coat is subsequently crosslinked by being exposed to laser light to produce structurally stable microcapsules of controllable thickness of the order of tens of microns. Encapsulated islets are removed from the encapsulation chamber by a valveless pump and recovered by filtration or centrifugation. Show moreMONUMENTAL ADAPTATION: REIMAGINING THE OLD CHICAGO POST OFFICE Built in 1932, the Old Chicago Main Post Office was the largest post office in the world at three million square feet. It was designed to accommodate the extension of Congress Parkway and in 1953 the Eisenhower Expressway cut a void through the center of the building. Finally the Post Office was vacated in 1997 and remains unused to this day. This project proposes the adaptation of the Post Office into a hybrid fieldhouse that contains public recreation and retail space. This proposal keeps the Post Office public, utilizing income generated through retail to maintain the building for Chicagoans. Recreation program is inserted into voids carved out of the original building. Retail occupies the peripheral space, surrounding the voids. Show less

Show moreAn information display system is provided which comprises a body of material serving as both a substrate for thin film components and a medium for the propagation of Rayleigh acoustic waves along its surface. The thin film components include elements responsive to the Rayleigh waves to provide information at selected locations on the surface of the body. These components may be either the control elements or the output elements of the display system. Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute United States Patent Show less

Show moreA method of analyzing odors is provided in which an odorant sample is passed through a plurality of gas chromatographic columns having stationary phases of differing chemical polarity. The numerical value of various subjective odor dimensions of the odorant sample which otherwise would involve subjective test panel analysis, may be determined from the retention times of the odorant sample with respect to the various stationary phase materials. Show moreThis paper explores the phenomena of environmental coordination within Northeast Asia. I initially frame the discussion around claims that China is a pollution haven for its neighboring countries, and I look for evidence in the domestic and regional environmental institutions which challenge China’s pollution haven status. I find that that there is a science and technology-based epistemic community in Northeast Asia which provides an important theoretical response to counter the pollution haven hypothesis. As well, given its strong science and technological output, Japan is poised to assume leadership of the Northeast Asian environmental regime for at least the short- to medium-term. Show less

Show moreInfectious medical materials is rendered innocuous by heating heterogeneous medical materials having wet and dry portions with a radio frequency electric field. The medical materials are exposed to the radio frequency electric field in order to heat the medical waste. The medical waste may include sorted medical or veterinary waste which after heat treatment may be shredded and recycled. Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute Sponsorship: Held, Jeffery S. Show moreA video tape cartridge of endless loop configuration capable of tape speeds suitable for longitudinal scan television recording while providing one hour or more of continuous playing time on one-quarter inch width tape. In an illustrative embodiment tape guides within the cartridge are shiftable from a loading position to an operating position without a substantial change in the length of the tape path to accommodate scanning of the tape at a tensioned loop closely adjacent the capstan.
