Show moreForced periodic operation of tubular reactors can increase conversion and yield if proper operating conditions and forcing policies are selected. A numerical approach is proposed for computing the effects of periodic input forcing by a shooting algorithm. Such computational tools permit the assessment of the benefits of forced periodic operation of a specific reactor system and the identification of the ranges of operating conditions where forced periodic operation is beneficial. This information provides valuable insight for planning detailed experimental studies. Determining the influential input variables and bracketing the ranges of the operating conditions for improving reactor performance will reduce significantly the experiments needed for selecting the most favorable reactor operation policies. The application of the numerical algorithm is illustrated by assessing the benefits of forced periodic operation to a CO oxidation reactor model. The results reveal substantial improvement in performance with slow cycling in feed concentration. Endnote format citation Show less

Show moreThe invention disclosed is a process to allocate channels in a sectorized cellular network. A system of allocating cellular frequencies (channels) to the sectors among the cells within a tile is disclosed which maximizes channel set usage within the tile while avoiding co-channel interference between cells. According to the present system, no infrastructure rebuild is required. The disclosed approach further supports all currently used cellular technology. By alternating and rotating the channel assignments across sectors, what is a seemingly locally poor algorithm utilizing additional local channels is actually a globally good algorithm which is efficient in terms of the total number of channels used owing to short reuse distance and low number of cell types. Show moreBy refashioning the design and programmatic use of an offshore oil rig into a luxury hotel for ecotourists, a new age of responsible travel may emerge. By twisting the symbol of oil dependency into an ecologically preserved, environmentally accountable and revenue-producing prototype, the ideals of reuse, energy and environment can be viewed through a new lens. This design creates interesting and innovative living spaces and environments aided by sustainable integrations to create a “living machine” that establishes connections between all building systems as well as inhabitant inputs and outputs resulting in an energy independent habitat. Show moreUsing the sample of Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV generated by the AMPT with string melting model, the anisotropic amplitudes of azimuthal distributions of total transverse momentum, mean radial (transverse) momentum, and multiplicity are first presented and compared. It shows that the azimuthal distribution of mean radial momentum well characterizes the radial expansion. So a measurement of the azimuthal distribution of mean transverse (radial) rapidity of final state particles is suggested. We further show that the isotropic part of the suggested distribution is the combination of isotropic radial expansion and thermal motion. The anisotropic amplitude characterizes the anisotropic radial flow, and coincides with the parameter of anisotropic radial flow rapidity extracted from a generalized blast-wave parametrization. Show moreMadison, WI is dominated by two main forces; the state government and the University of Wisconsin. These two institutions are linked by State Street, a pedestrian and bike corridor that serves as the main public gathering space for the city. The new Central Public Library along this strip will provide a free, democratic space for all Madison citizens. Beyond collecting books and storing media, the Madison Library offers opportunities for gatherings and informational exchanges 24 hours a day. Show less

Show moreThe disclosure describes a technique for uniform heating of relatively large blocks of hydrocarbonaceous formations in situ using radio frequency (RF) electrical energy that is substantially confined to the volume to be heated and effects of dielectric heating of the formations. An important aspect of the disclosure relates to the fact that certain hydrocarbonaceous earth formations, for example raw unheated oil shale, exhibit dielectric absorption characteristics in the radio frequency range. In accordance with the system of the invention, a plurality of conductors are inserted in the formations and bound a particular volume of the formations. The phrase "bounding a particular volume" is intended to mean that the volume is enclosed on at least two sides thereof. Electrical excitation is provided for establishing alternating electric fields in the volume. The frequency of the excitation is selected as a function of the dimensions of the volume so as to establish a substantially non-radiating electric field which is substantially confined in the volume. In this manner, volumetric dielectric heating of the formations will occur to effect approximately uniform controlled heating of the volume Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute United States Patent Show less
