Show moreThe IPRO team was successful in designing a process that converts biomass into liquid fuels for transportation. The biomass chosen was cow manure because of two main reasons. The abundance of cows in southern Wisconsin provides an ideal place for the process to be built. Also, because most other types of potential biomasses currently have uses, manure was favorable. The process was split into three sections: gasification, gas clean-up and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor.

Show moreVoIP is increasingly becoming an alternative to the traditional PSTN for Telephony this is as a result of certain advantages and services offered by VoIP. VoIP will be considered able to fully replace PSTN if it can provide same or better Quality of Service and Security guaranty as PSTN. Delivering telephony services over (best-effort and connectionless) IP data network faces two main issues not experienced in PSTN, security and quality of service; security in the sense that telephone calls will be susceptible to attacks that are known in the Internet, quality of service in the sense that voice packets now have to compete with packets of other traffic for a limited bandwidth. Researches are ongoing in these two fields to make experience on VoIP similar to the traditional telephone. The focus of this thesis work is in the security aspect. SIP protocol has become one of the most popular signaling protocols used for VoIP, SIP architecture is an open architecture originally developed for trusted communications among trusted partners, and therefore much thought was not given to security. Adopting SIP as a main protocol used in VoIP in the Internet where there are where there are lots of hostile users calls for more ways to properly secure its use. The thesis work involves setting up of a SIP based VoIP network based on open source SIP telephony platforms to study various security issues in a SIP-Based VoIP network and experiment some proposed detection mechanism. The contribution of this work is to develop a graphical user interface in the UNIX environment using Java that makes the execution of the attack scenarios easy to carry out and observe.

Show moreHamid Arastoopour in Chemical Engineering has developed and patented technology for processing scrap rubber from tires in an extruder. This technology breaks the chemical bonds that result in the rubber being vulcanized. This allows the rubber to be reformed into new shapes and re-vulcanized resulting a true recycling of the material into new rubber parts. Most other rubber recycling technology only grinds up the rubber. These technologies allow the rubber to be used as a filler but does not allow true recycling of the rubber. There is a tremendous supply of used tires are a significant environmental problem as well as waste of a potential resource. This technology could provide the means to effectively use this waste. This EnPRO will look at the issues and opportunities associated with commercializing this exciting technology. This will include an assessment of additional technology development that is needed, an analysis of the cost of implementing this technology, sources of scrap rubber, as well as the market for the recycled rubber. It will also look at possible ways to fund the development. The EnPRO will be supported by a business representative in addition to technical faculty.

Show moreA method for improving searches in a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing system that includes a plurality of server computers. A content file, identified by a descriptor including at least one metadata term and a mathematical identifier that uniquely identifies the content file in one of the server computers, is selected for searching. Other server computers are searched to find one or more matching content files; one that has a descriptor with a mathematical identifier matching the mathematical identifier of the first content file. The descriptors of the matching content files are returned to the searching server computer and used to expand the local descriptor.

Show moreConventional approach in acquisition and reconstruction of images from frequency domain strictly follow the Nyquist sampling theorem. The principle states that the sampling frequency required for complete reconstruction of a signal is at least twice the maximum frequency of the original signal. This dissertation studies an emerging theory called Compressive Sensing or Compressive Sampling which goes against the conventional wisdom. Theoretically, it is possible to reconstruct images or signals accurately from a number of samples which is far smaller than the Nyquist samples. Compressive Sensing has proven to have farther implications than merely reducing sampling frequency of the signal. Possibility of new data acquisition methods from analog domain to digital form using fewer sensors, image acquisition using much smaller sensors array, to name a few. This novel theory combines sampling and compression methods thereby reducing the data acquisition resources, such as number of sensors, storage memory for collected samples and maximum operating frequency. This dissertation presents some insights into reconstruction of grey scale images and audio signals using OMP and CoSaMP algorithms. It also delves into some of the key mathematical insights underlying this new theory and explains some of the interactions between Compressive Sensing and related elds such as statistics, coding theory and theoretical computer science. viii

Show moreEfficiency in parking facilities has been set to low standards since self-parking was introduced in the 1950s1. As technology has developed, parking has been left in the past. Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National
