Cartridge Transducer Machine and Cartridge Therefor
A tape cartridge transducer machine compatible with existing tape cartridges but provided with a cartridge ejection leverage mechanism which is actuated manually or by a solenoid to overcome the cartridge-biasing spring and shift the cartridge to an inactive standby position in the cartridge receiving space of the machine, after which the cartridge is manually removable with minimum effort. The machine preferably provides a balanced cartridge-biasing means to safeguard the cartridge against binding., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

PLS, balanced, and canonical variate realization techniques for identifying VARMA models in state space
This paper demonstrates the application of PLS regression, balanced realization, and canonical variate (CV) state space modeling techniques in identifying stationary vector autoregressive moving average (VARMA) type of time series models in state space. An example VARMA process model is used to generate data, carry out modeling activities, and compare the three model development techniques. All realization methods provide equivalent state space models. Balanced realization can not handle singularities in the covariance matrix of past observations while all other methods can accommodate such singularities. Balanced realization and classical PLS do not provide minimal state variables that are orthogonal. 'Orthogonal states' PLS and canonical variate state space realization give orthogonal state variables that provide robust parameter estimates from real data, however the PLS method requires an additional singular value decomposition step., Endnote format citation

Aging in Place (Semester Unknown) IPRO 360
The purpose of this IPRO 360, Spring 2011, is to research and identify the significant problems encountered by the elderly in their everyday lives. This IPRO will create a foundation for the development and refinement of possible solutions for future IPRO semesters in conjunction with the Chamberlain Group. To be successful, this IPRO must create a simple, meaningful problem statement that can guide Chamberlain Group and future IPROs toward actually providing solutions for helping the elderly age in place., Sponsorship: The Chamberlain Group, Deliverables

Partner Experience Management for Multioperator and Warehouse Counting Systems (semester?), IPRO 349E
Located in Krakow, Poland, IPRO-349 is different from any other IPRO that has been implemented to date. Unlike its Illinois Institute of Technology counterparts, IPRO-349 is a study abroad, an internship and a partner project with students from Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza (AGH). Rather than separating into sub teams as a normal IPRO would, IPRO 349 is broken into completely different project groups. Each group could and should be considered a separate IPRO group. This project plan is from the perspective of Group 3.1 within IPRO-349 and adapted to fit the requirements of the company Comarch. This report deals with the reasoning behind IPRO-349 Group 3.1 and explains how the problems presented will be solved. It is divided into four sections. Section 1 assists in the understanding of the project by providing a brief introduction of Comarch and the project’s background, as well as a high level list of objectives. Section 2 expands on Section 1’s objectives by going into what type of work and how Group 3.1 will need to work in order to complete the objectives. Section 2 also explains what exactly is expected to result from their work. Section 3 goes into the most detail as it deals with the more specific aspects of the project such as its budget and the task list, designating who does what. The human resource assignment of the project is then discussed in Section 4, further identifying the individuals in Group 3.1 and what special skills they contribute to the project, Sponsorship: Comarch, Deliverables for IPRO 349E: Partner Experience Management for Multioperator and Warehouse Counting Systems for the Summer 2007 semester

Planning for Human Implantation of a Cortical Visual Prosthesis (sequence unknown), IPRO 334 - Deliverables: IPRO 334 Project Plan F09
The Intracortical Visual Prosthesis is based upon that concept that by implanting a large number of subminiature electrodes within the human visual cortex, coordinated temporal-spatial image information can be artificially communicated to the human visual cortex in the form of electrical currents, acting as a sensory substitute for normal vision., Sponsorship: IIT Laboratory of Neural Prosthetic Research, Deliverables for IPRO 334: Planning for Human Implantation of a Cortical Visual Prosthesis for the fall 2009 semester

Helping in Orthopedic and Prosthetic Education, Sponsorship: H.O.P.E., The overall goal of our IPRO team is to create a curriculum and a program that helps all practitioners and employees better understand how to utilize and build upon their knowledge and talents in the medical work setting. This will be achieved by promoting the awareness of treatments available, organizing demonstrations and lectures to help educate others, developing a course load for an accredited student. By achieving the aforementioned, our IPRO team hopes to increase the availably of funding to help create public awareness as well as to increase the quality and durability of the products we produce. In addition, we hope to expand on the QR Code invented by the Japanese. With this invention, we hope to develop a low cost solution for developing nations to be able to have quick and easy access to maintenance instructions, use instructions, and contact information of medical professionals. With the QR Code, we hope that potential problems will be able to be solved on site, wherever one may be.
MODE SPECTRA OF NATURAL DISTURBANCES IN A CIRCULAR JET AND THE EFFECT OF ACOUSTIC FORCING
A modal spectrum technique was used to study coherent instability modes (both axisymmetric and azimuthal) triggered by naturally occurring disturbances in a circular jet. This technique was applied to a high Reynolds number (400,000) jet for both untripped (transitional) and tripped (turbulent) nozzle exit boundary layers, with both cases having a core turbulence level of 0.15%. The region up to the end of the potential core was dominated by the axisymmetric mode, with the azimuthal modes dominating further downstream. The growth of the azimuthal modes was observed closer to the nozzle exit for the jet with a transitional boundary layer. Whether for locally parallel flow or slowly diverging flow, even at low levels of acoustic forcing, the inviscid linear theory is seen to be inadequate for predicting the amplitude of the forced mode. In contrast, the energy integral approach reasonably predicts the evolution of the forced mode.

Method for In Situ Heat Processing of Hydrocarbonaceous Formations
The disclosure describes a technique for uniform heating of relatively large blocks of hydrocarbonaceous formations in situ using radio frequency (RF) electrical energy that is substantially confined to the volume to be heated and effects dielectric heating of the formations. An important aspect of the disclosure relates to the fact that certain hydrocarbonaceous earth formations, for example raw unheated oil shale, exhibit dielectric absorption characteristics in the radio frequency range. In accordance with the system of the invention, a plurality of conductors are inserted in the formations and bound a particular volume of the formations. The phrase "bounding a particular volume" is intended to mean that the volume is enclosed on at least two sides thereof. Electrical excitation is provided for establishing alternating electric fields in the volume. The frequency of the excitation is selected as a function of the dimensions of the volume so as to establish a substantially non-radiating electric field which is substantially confined in the volume. In this manner, volumetric dielectric heating of the formations will occur to effect approximately uniform controlled heating of the volume., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

Intranet Mediator
An intranet mediator for obtaining direct answers to natural language questions allowing users to search both a data warehouse of integrated/structured data sources and unstructured data sources. The intranet mediator allows the user to obtain an answer to a natural language question without having to surf the data sources in which the answer might be contained, or without being limited to one specific factual item return. The intranet mediator operates on the supposition that most answers to business queries are contained within structured data sources which have been integrated into the data warehouse thereby having common schema and known contents. Preselection of the most relevant data source(s) is thus possible before query output. Search of unstructured data is also performed for additional context surrounding either the question or the answer. A direct answer is given in response to the question. If desired, the intranet mediator may also display a list of data sources where additional relevant information may be found., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent
