- Apparatus and Method for In Situ Heat Processing of Hydrocarbonaceous Formations
- The disclosure describes a technique for uniform heating of relatively large blocks of hydrocarbonaceous formations in situ using radio frequency (RF) electrical energy that is substantially confined to the volume to be heated and effects of dielectric heating of the formations. An important aspect of the disclosure relates to the fact that certain hydrocarbonaceous earth formations, for example raw unheated oil shale, exhibit dielectric absorption characteristics in the radio frequency range. In accordance with the system of the invention, a plurality of conductors are inserted in the formations and bound a particular volume of the formations. The phrase "bounding a particular volume" is intended to mean that the volume is enclosed on at least two sides thereof. Electrical excitation is provided for establishing alternating electric fields in the volume. The frequency of the excitation is selected as a function of the dimensions of the volume so as to establish a substantially non-radiating electric field which is substantially confined in the volume. In this manner, volumetric dielectric heating of the formations will occur to effect approximately uniform controlled heating of the volume, Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

- Enhanced Vision System for Construction Safety (Semester Unknown) IPRO 355
- The purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan., Deliverables

- Kalleidos (Spring 2011) IPRO 303
- “Over the last few years there has been an explosion of different websites that allow average person to contribute different content such as pictures, comments, stories and reviews about places around them. While there are many companies that focus on aggregating such data into common stream - complexity of interpreting such data in a meaningful actionable way remains a challenge for many companies including NAVTEQ.” [Appendix B] Identify new content from real time feeds which include 1. Points of Interest and their attribution (e.g. Hours of Operation, Languages Spoken at locale, etc…) 2. Any associated content (e.g. events, relationships to other Points of Interest (e.g. same owner, etc…) Create visualizations based on this content - some basic examples could include 1. Hot/Not So Hot real estate areas (new construction, sales) based on agent and broker social media updates 2. High/Low crime areas based on social media stream 3. Hot/Not city zones based on number of people tweeting/updating Facebook/checking in/etc… in certain areas, parties, POIs., Sponsorship: NAVTEQ, Deliverables

- Comparison of Brake Pedal Frictional Characteristics (Spring 2001) IPRO 313: Comparison of Brake Pedal Frictional Characteristics IPRO313 Spring 2001 Final Presentation
- This project will develop new ideas for materials that can be used to improve the safety, performance and appearance of accelerator pedals used in automobiles. The team will investigate the range of feasible materials and mechanical design alternatives, as well as their economic viability. Selected concepts will be tested through a carefully designed testing program so that the performance of alternatives can be compared with confidence. The results of this project will provide important information to Daimler-Chrysler that can be used for follow-up design work; and can lead to other projects that explore new concepts for automobile components and systems. This project continues the work of a Fall 2000 IPRO team., Sponsorship: Daimler-Chrysler Corporation, Project Plan for IPRO 313: Comparison of Brake Pedal Frictional Characteristics for the Spring 2001 semester

- Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery and Compositions Therefor
- A method is provided for microbial enhanced oil recovery, wherein a combination of microorganisms is empirically formulated based on survivability under reservoir conditions and oil recovery efficiency, such that injection of the microbial combination may be made, in the presence of essentially only nutrient solution, directly into an injection well of an oil bearing reservoir having oil present at waterflood residual oil saturation concentration. The microbial combination is capable of displacing residual oil from reservoir rock, which oil may be recovered by waterflooding without causing plugging of the reservoir rock. Further, the microorganisms are capable of being transported through the pores of the reservoir rock between said injection well and associated production wells, during waterflooding, which results in a larger area of the reservoir being covered by the oil-mobilizing microorganisms., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent
