- Robotic Cane Devices
- A robotic cane may include a grip handle, a cane body extending from the grip handle at a first end, a motorized omni-directional wheel coupled to a second end of the cane body, a balance control sensor, and a controller module. The balance control sensor provides a balance signal corresponding to an orientation of the robotic cane. The controller module may receive the balance signal from the balance control sensor and calculate a balancing velocity of the motorized omni-directional wheel based at least in part on the balance signal and an inverted pendulum control algorithm. The controller module may further provide a drive signal to the motorized omni-directional wheel in accordance with the calculated balancing velocity. The calculated balancing velocity is a speed and direction of the motorized omni-directional wheel to retain the robotic cane in an substantially upright position., Sponsorship: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Multi-Resolution Depth Estimation Using Modified Census Transform for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
- A computer-implemented depth estimation method based on non-parametric Census transform with adaptive window patterns and semi-global optimization. A modified cross-based cost aggregation technique adaptively creates the shape of the cross for each pixel distinctly. In addition, a depth refinement algorithm fills holes within the estimated depth map using the surrounding background depth pixels and sharpens the object boundaries by exerting a trilateral filter to the generated depth map. The trilateral filter uses the curvature of pixels as well as texture and depth information to sharpen the edges., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- BP Whiting Refinery Expansion: Developing Lake Michigan Wastewater Cleanup Options (Semester Unknown) IPRO 346
- IPRO346 will focus on familiarizing itself with British Petroleum’s (BP) wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for its oil refinery in Whiting, IN. Specifically, this IPRO will analyze the current permits and their stipulations regarding the amount of ammonia and total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater being dumped in Lake Michigan. Ultimately, possible methods and designs will be devised to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS remaining in treated wastewater. These designs will take the form of a process flow sheet with a computer simulation to model the designs. At the culmination of this IPRO we will have several different models for possible upgrades to the Whiting refinery wastewater treatment plant to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS in the wastewater entering Lake Michigan as well as a cost to implement each solution., Deliverables

- A Greener IIT (Semester Unknown) IPRO 326
- IIT’s core vision is built around the principle that no matter how good we get, we can always improve. As the University seeks to assert itself as a member of the top tier of academic institutions in the U.S., there are many ideas for improvement up for implementation. Among these ideas is the goal to make IIT the most sustainable, urban university campus in the United States. IPRO 326 (“A Greener IIT”) is based upon the idea that in order to accomplish this, we must improve the sustainability of IIT’s main campus landscape., Deliverables

- Green Building (Semester Unknown) IPRO 335
- The teams’ task is to demonstrate the interdisciplinary cooperative requirements as needed to fulfill a mission of sustainability. This IPRO simulates an actual building development within the Chicago City limits. Specifically a green building development, which means that there is an increase in efficiency of the resources used while the building is constructed, operative, and removed., Deliverables

- Sustainability Planning of IIT Buildings (semester?), IPRO 320
- The objective of IPRO 320, Sustainability Planning of IIT Buildings, is to contribute to the problem solving necessary to implement energy efficiency improvements in existing buildings and to the central steam and electric systems. Alternate possibilities for energy use in context with their building type and surroundings will be discovered through research of other university buildings at the University of Chicago, Loyola University, and IIT. This research will then be used in finding alternate forms of energy generation to secure the sustainability of the IIT campus., Deliverables for IPRO 320: Sustainability Planning of IIT Buildings for the Fall 2006 semester

- Modeling, monitoring and control strategies for high temperature short time pasteurization systems - 3. Statistical monitoring of product lethality and process sensor reliability
- Statistical process monitoring (SPM) is used in food processing industries to improve productivity and product quality. SPM can also provide information to operators on how close a process is to non-compliance to product safety limits, and carry out periodic checks of sensor accuracy at high frequency. Traditional SPM tools such as Shewhart charts are not appropriate for continuous food processes because of autocorrelation in data. Four alternative SPM techniques are presented and applied to high temperature short time (HTST) dairy pasteurization. The study attempted to achieve compliance of the HTST process operation with the recommended Pasteurized Milk Ordinance by providing a margin between the alarm limits of the monitoring chart and the safety limits. Monitoring of residuals and parameter change detection techniques ave used for monitoring processes with autocorrelated variables. Hotelling's T-2 and residuals of canonical variates techniques are used for monitoring multivariable processes., Endnote format citation

- Hadronic final states in high-pT QCD at CDF
- The heavy quark content associated with gauge boson production is of great interest to studies of QCD. These events probe the gluon and heavy-quark parton distribution functions of the proton, and also provide a measurement of the rate of final state gluon splitting to heavy favor. In addition, gauge boson plus heavy quark events are representative of backgrounds to Higgs, single top, and supersymmetric particle searches. Recent work with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron has measured the cross-section of several gauge boson plus heavy flavor production processes, including the first Tevatron observation of specific charm process p͞p → W + c. Results are found to be in agreement with NLO predictions that include an enhanced rate of g → c͞c =b͞b splitting. Lastly, a new analysis promises to probe a lower pT (c) region than has yet been explored, by fully reconstructing D* → D^0 (Kπ)π decays in the full CDF dataset (9:7 fb^1)., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory

- Project InfoMoto (Summer 2011) IPRO 308
- Currently, some motorcycles have the ability to collect information about the performance of the vehicle. However, this information may not be easily accessible to the rider or mechanic of the bike and may also not be presented in an easily understood format. The equipment used to gather this data is generally not inexpensive as well. IPRO 308 intends to develop an affordable device called motoPro which firstly, will gather and record important information during a motorcycle trip and secondly, display that data in a user-friendly, understandable format. This data can be described as a rider profile. The rider profile will not only be useful for improving the safety and performance of the rider, but will also benefit the mechanic and also possibly the manufacturer of the motorcycle. Team motoPro completed initial technological and consumer research during this 2011 summer semester. The team investigated current technology to see what solutions it may provide, began obtaining some hardware components for prototype research and also began interviewing members of the motorcycle community in order to gain valuable insights to use for the device. Some members of the team also completed the Basic Riding Course offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in order to become more familiar with riding a motorcycle. The project will continue into the 2011 fall semester and the team will continue consumer and technology research, create a compelling story with which to attract a sponsor and continue prototyping., Sponsorship: IIT Inter Professional Collaboratory, Project Plan for IPRO 308: Project InfoMoto for the Summer 2011 semester

- Longitudinal Scan Magnetic Recording and Reproducing System for Color Television Signals
- The present invention relates to the magnetic recording of televisions signals. The source of video signals is a television receiver. Adapter circuitry is disclosed which includes a detachable cable for coupling the magnetic transducing heads with the video output of the receiver for the purpose of recording the broadcast signal or the display of the reproduced video signal derived from the tape. Detachment of the cable places the television receiver in a condition to allow the display of the broadcast video instead of recording the broadcast video signal., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent
