Show more Evaluate and incorporate previous presentation feedback into new methods of addressing the scientific aspect of global warming. This primarily includes subdividing the issue into four major aspects that contribute to this effect. Present material to a larger and more diverse audiences, including schools, community centers, libraries, non-profit organizations, and other possibilities. Focus on solid, scientific data from credible sources that define why and how global warming is occurring, rather than discussing the politics and economics that surround the issue. Create a platform for this IPRO to continue in the future, using resources and feedback received from the current semester.

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester are to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research. The research conducted this semester will help us transform the space into a more sustainable working environment. Since the ultimate goal is rather ambitious, our goal for this particular semester is to implement an energy plan which will become the basis off of which the future IPRO’s will continue towards the ultimate goal. We also intend to clear the space so that the developed plan can be tested.

Show moreThe objective of this semester’s IPRO 309 will be to incorporate three seminars into the framework proposed by last year’s IPRO 309. Fall 2010’s IPRO 309 proposed an educational curriculum that helped train individuals in Orthotics and Prosthetics in Categories I, II, and III. The goal is to improve on last year’s IPRO proposal and bring it closer to completion. Although the awareness of medical advancements is central, the well-being of patients is also of equal importance. Compatibility of medical devices and their psychological impacts on patients need to be understood by people involved in orthotics and prosthetics. Also related to a better patient care, it is beneficial to create a feasible way of tracking patient information. To emphasize these, seminars will be introduced consisting of materials compatibility, patient well-being, and electronic medical record keeping. Material compatibility will explore aspects such as patient-device interaction and minimizing negative reactions due to the orthotic and prosthetic devices, which includes rashes or other sorts of discomfort. Patient well-being will evaluate the psychological impact of said devices on the patient and help them incorporate the devices into their daily lives. Electronic medical record keeping will introduce technology that will enable practitioners to gather and track the patient’s medical records with ease. The main technology to explore for this course would be the Quick Response (QR) Technology that is incorporated in many smartphones today. These seminars will help increase awareness that orthotics and prosthetics are not just medical fields, but instead a series of professional relationships with patients to help them endure the difficulties and pains they are going through. The goal is that medical professionals will be able to provide the best care possible to patients, both physically and mentally. Additional improvements will also be made on the capstone design course, introduced in previous IPROs, by incorporating methods being used in capstone courses at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Show moreAn adaptive robust M-estimator for nonparametric nonlinear system identification is proposed. This M-estimator is optimal over a broad class of distributions in the sense of maximum likelihood estimation. The error distributions are described by the generalized exponential distribution family. It combines nonparametric regression techniques to form a powerful procedure for nonlinear system identification. The adaptive procedure's excellent performance characteristics are illustrated in a Monte Carlo study by comparing the results with previous methods.

Show moreA process for recycling rubber, elastomers, and thermoset materials in which the material to be recycled is pulverized in a manner which maintains the chemical composition of the material, producing a powder. The powder is introduced into a mold which is heated to a temperature of at least about 200.degree. C. and a compression force of at least about 10 tons is applied to the powder for a period of at least one hour, resulting in formation of a single piece of the rubber, elastomeric, or thermoset material, with no change in chemical structure.

Show moreAt one time the Michael Reese Campus was a thriving mix of famous architecture and medical centers. Recently planned to be the home of the 2016 Olympic Village, with the loss of the bid the land has been abandoned. IPRO 356 is tasked with the challenge of designing a plan to redevelop the site. Building on previous work established by IPRO’s 359 and 356, we will use the first winning anchor and master plan created for the site and develop a second anchor. This second anchor and updated master plan aims at meeting the needs of the surrounding neighborhood while bringing life back to the area.

Show moreThe team working on this project has set itself three major objectives. Firstly it strives to create a comprehensive and in-depth database containing valuable information concerning sustainability. This database should be user-friendly and intuitively presented so people who are interested in sustainability are quickly educated with the key points and have easy access to relevant and high quality references and further readings. The second objective of this project essentially consists of creating a roadmap and master plan on how to make Illinois Institute of Technology’s (IIT) Main Campus sustainable. This will be done by auditing and then benchmarking IIT to other similar projects. This roadmap and master plan will be developed with the vision that once implemented IIT will be a leader in sustainability and encourage many others to follow our track. Lastly the third objective is to create a house of the future. The house of the future has many objectives for itself. It should incorporate current design possibilities and make use of various available technologies to be sustainable and energy efficient among other things. This house should attract the public and educate them how easily sustainability can be achieved using current technology and knowledge at a competitive price.

Show moreThe use of an automated system integrating data conditioning, statistical methods, and artificial intelligence tools to summarize and interpret high-frequency physiological data such as the electrocardiogram is investigated. The development of a methodology and its associated tools for real-time patient monitoring and diagnosis is accomplished by using the commercial programming environments MATLAB and G2, a real-time knowledge-based system (KBS) development shell. Data interpretation and classification is performed by integrating statistical classification methods and knowledge-based techniques with a graphical user interface that provides quick access to the analysis results as well as the original data. A KBS was developed that incorporates various statistical methods with a rule-based decision system to detect abnormal situations, provide preliminary interpretation and diagnosis, and to report these findings to the healthcare provider

Show moreImproved methods and apparatus are disclosed for confining ohmic heating currents to a subsurface formation in the use of in situ ohmic heating for recovery of volatile and semi-volatile materials, such as hazardous waste, hydrocarbon-like materials, and valuable minerals having thermally responsive properties. Spacing between emplaced electrodes and the number of electrodes employed are controlled to cause coupling between electrodes for more uniform and higher temperature heating. Electrode designs are disclosed which suppress spurious earth currents which would heat other formations not of interest. Suppression of electrode end currents is accomplished by the use of distinct rings of insulation, control of the applied potential along the electrode, and injection or withdrawal of fluids at distinct locations along the electrode.

Show moreThis study (thesis) predicts out of sample one to five year quarterly credit default swap spread curves for subsets of a population comprised of 308 companies via the linear Bayesian Random Coefficient Model (RMC) with balanced panel construction, capturing over 80% of reference entities with liquid CDS term structures. The use of scoring, structural and reduced form model variations generates credit spread tenure points and curves at the company level. The Altman Z-score and classic Merton structural framework explain too little of the credit default swap spreads out of sample. However, The Merton structural framework works well in predicting out of sample credit default swap spreads when modified by deriving the implied leverage ratio via market spreads. The widely used, Bloomberg implemented, JPMorgan 2001(CDSW) model works well for the period the study covers. The Bayesian Random Coefficients model explains 87% of observed credit default swap spreads one quarter out of sample, substantially exceeding any published research on the credit spread forecasting subject.
