Show morePhotograph of the Mecca Flats, located at 3360 South State Street and constructed in 1891. The apartments were designed by Edbrooke & Burnham, and were demolished in 1952. Originally constructed as a hotel for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, the 96-unit Mecca building became an apartment building after the fair. The building was acquired by Illinois Tech around 1941, and was demolished in 1952 to make way for the construction of S.R. Crown Hall. The building was also known as Mecca Apartments, and The Mecca.

At the far right of the photograph, the buildings are believed to include the Alpha Sigma Phi house, the Triangle House, and the Pi Kappa Phi house. These buildings were all demolished between ca. 1959-1963 as the block was cleared for the construction of new Illinois Tech dormitories. Once known as Cudahy mansion, this building was purchased in 1939 for graduate students. It served as one of IIT's Naval housing quarters from approximately 1943-45. After World War II, the building housed graduate students and, from 1948-61, the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Formerly known as Cudahy Mansion (1880s-1919) , Chicago Motor Club (1919-1929), Quarters 2 (1943-1946), Graduate House (1939-1943, 1946-1948), Brown House (1950s), Brown Hall.

These three fraternity houses were designed by the architecture firm Mittelbusher & Tourtelot and constructed in 1960. The Alpha Epsilon Pi house (foreground) was demolished in 2007. The former Theta Xi house (middle) became the Alpha Sigma Alpha house ca. 2000, and the former Tau Epsilon Phi house (rear) was the law house for a brief period, and became the Kappa Phi Delta house in 2004. Show morePhotograph of Chapin Hall and the Physics Building, located at 3333 South Federal Street. Chapin Hall was designed by the firm Patton & Fisher. It was constructed in 1888, renovated in 1937 and demolished in 1968. Built as part of Armour Flats. In 1907, six sections of the building were christened Chapin Hall for Armour Institute use. When Armour Flats was demolished, these units left on Federal St. to the south of the Armour Mission building were left standing. When Chapin Hall was remodeled in 1937, two of its northern sections became the Physics Building. Photographer unknown.
