The apartments were designed by Edbrooke & Burnham, and were demolished in 1952. Originally constructed as a hotel for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, the 96-unit Mecca building became an apartment building after the fair. The building was acquired by Illinois Tech around 1941, and was demolished in 1952 to make way for the construction of S.R. Crown Hall. The building was also known as Mecca Apartments, and The Mecca.
