Show moreElevated ambient concentrations of fine and ultrafine particulate matter are consistently linked with adverse health effects in epidemiological studies. However, because people spend most of their time indoors (particularly at home) and outdoor particles can infiltrate into buildings with varying efficiencies, much of human inhalation exposure to outdoor particles actually occurs inside residences. Consequently, relying on ambient measurements of particulate matter can result in a significant exposure misclassification in epidemiological studies. To address the range of this misclassification in U.S. residences, this work predicts the statistical distribution of long-term average size-resolved indoor proportions of outdoor particles (from 0.001 to 10 μm) across the entire U.S. single-family residential building stock by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Best available data was used for distributions of important building-related model inputs (e.g., air exchange rates, penetration factors, deposition rates, and others). Overall, results suggest that infiltration factors (i.e., the indoor-outdoor particle concentration ratio in the absence of indoor sources) vary highly among residences across the U.S. residential building stock. Long-term average size-resolved infiltration factors are estimated to vary by a factor of 20-100+ from the least protective of single-family homes in the U.S. (99th percentile) to the most protective (1st percentile), depending on particle size. Long-term average infiltration factors are predicted to be within a factor of 2-4 in the majority of homes (between the 25th and 75th percentiles of homes). A regression analysis further shows that parameters such as deposition rates, air exchange rates, penetration factors, and filter removal efficiencies are the most influential parameters for predicting infiltration factors. xiii Finally, the predicted distributions of size-resolved infiltration factors were used to map to archetypal outdoor particle size distributions to estimate absolute concentrations and ultimately inhalation doses of both ultrafine particles (UFPs) and PM2.5 in an adult male. Inhalation doses of UFPs and PM2.5 were estimated to be 43-49 and 21-22 times higher, respectively, in the least protective homes (99th percentile) versus the most protective homes (1st percentile). Taken together, these results suggest that a wide variability in size-resolved infiltration factors among U.S. residences leads to large variations in the dose of particles inhaled in indoor environments, which should be accounted for in future epidemiological studies.

Show morePost-earthquake fire ignition (PEFI) can lead to severe structural damage following an earthquake. Estimating the risk of such ignitions in buildings and identifying methods to abate it are essential steps in an overall effort to mitigate the impact of post-earthquake fires in urban areas. While several models have been developed for areas with available historical PEFI data, such as the Western United States, no such models have been developed for areas with little or no data specific for post-earthquake fires. Examples of such areas are seismic regions in the Midwestern United States. The lack of PEFI data for these areas is due to the fact that at the time of several significant earthquakes in the early nineteenth century, most earthquake-stricken communities where rural. With the growth of urban areas in the region, a need exists for a methodology that can be effectively used in estimating PEFI risks when no or little historical data is available. In this research, it was found that models for PEFI risk estimation may indeed be developed using available data on ignitions for normal conditions as a basis and then using some type of a modification factor to account for the significance of future earthquakes. This modification factor depends on the characteristics of the region in terms of seismic activities and the type and distribution of buildings and their potential in promoting ignitions. The term “normal condition ignition” (NCI) refers to an ignition that occurs due to everyday activities and routine operations in a building. In a residential building, such activities include, for example, operating heating units and burners, cooking, and mechanical malfunction of appliances. In this research, it was found that four factors specifically affect PEFI risk and can be used to develop models for risk estimation. These are (1) spatial characteristics such as geographic concentration of particular building types; (2) ignitability characteristics, such as the sources of ignitions in a particular building type, (3) earthquake characteristics (such as the peak ground acceleration); and (4) temporal characteristics, such as the time of the earthquake and seasonality. Accordingly, models for estimating the risk of post-earthquake fire ignition occurrence are developed. These models are tested, and the model parameters calibrated, using information in areas for which both the NCI and PEFI data are available (such as in the Western United States). To illustrate the applicability of the models developed and proposed in this study, St. Louis City is considered. This constitutes a major urban area vulnerable to potential future seismic activities because of proximity to the New Madrid Fault Zone. Using the NCI data for this area, PEFI risk values are estimated based on probable future seismic activities in the region. The results are presented in terms of estimated annual risk of post-earthquake fires for the area specifically for residential buildings (such as single or multifamily dwellings). The study further discusses the significance of PEFI models, their limitations and also provides suggestions for the future continuation of the research.

As a part of the urban traffic network, the safety of the intersections in the urban area also reflects the efficiency and quality of the integrated urbanization level. Red light running at intersections has been a major safety concern in the United States. Because the red light running at intersection often results in a disproportionally higher percentage of injuries. From this point of view, the safety improvement of the urban intersections is imperative. The red light running photo enforcement has been designed to increase safety on streets by reducing the head-on, rear-end, and sideswipe crashes at intersections. Meanwhile, methods for intersection signal timing optimization in urban areas have been developed to reduce intersection delays. As a result of delay reductions, it is also important to analyze changes in vehicle crashes in order to gain a holistic understanding of traffic mobility and safety impacts. This study introduces an Empirical Bayesian (EB) before and after analysis method to evaluate the safety impacts of signal timing optimization on urban intersections with some intersections involved with red light running photo enforcement. Data on 842 signalized intersections are collected to calibrate the safety performance functions and to quantify the crash reduction effects before and after the signal timing optimization. Base on the EB method application, it is reviewed that a certain extent of safety enhancements is achieved as measured by crash type and severity level after intersection signal timing optimization and red light photo enforcement treatments.

In this thesis project, the investigation was performed on two real bridges named “Yale” Bridge, and “Valleyfield” Bridge. They were owned by the CN, one of the largest railway in the North American railroad industry. First, field testing of the bridges was performed by CN. Strain gauges (devices for indicating the strain of a material) and displacement transducers (devices for indicating movement) were placed on specific points on desired elements. Then the strain and displacement data for these specific points were recorded during the time trains were passing through the bridge. These devices record the data in voltage, so calibration constants must be applied to convert the data to stress & displacement units. After that, the bridges were modeled in “SAP2000” software, and the results were compared to the data recorded in the field. In the real world, these types of bridges are behaving something between the “Truss Model” and the “Frame Model”. Our aim is to know how they exactly behave and which model they are closer to. Results are showing that although the bridges are considered “Truss Bridges”, both of them are behaving more like a “Frame” Model than a “Truss” Model. In addition, the effect of the collision strut on L0U1 was investigated. Results shows that having this collision strut leads to the larger bending moment on L0U1 in comparison to lack of this member on the bridge. Finally, with respect to our results, “Adjustment Factors” for three different groups of diagonal, horizontal, and vertical members were provided in order to improve load rating analysis in the future.
