By creating key room components, existing homes can expand outward to provide additional rooms for current family members, for older generations moving back home and/or for additional rental spaces as a way to supplement income. The end result creates unique spaces and courtyards that places the resident much closer to nature.

In contrast to earlier research, we found that constituents do use Twitter to try to engage their officials and not just as a “soapbox” to express their opinions.

Show more12 legal research training modules. The following are brief summaries of short legal research lessons that the library can offer. This takes a modular approach where faculty can pick and choose and even combine modules. For example, one instructor may ask a librarian to come in for Getting Started and Case law on the same day, while another may want a librarian to come in and teach only Terms and Connectors. For each module, I give the name, student learning outcomes, suggested pairing of assignment/time in the semester, a summary of teaching activities, and the time I expect the module to take. In general, these class sessions take the form of a short talk and/or discussion to introduce the topic and teach some basic concepts, followed by group or individual work to practice researching while the instructor and the librarian walk around in the room, and some time to discuss the results as a group. Although the librarian takes the lead, faculty can expect to participate in the discussion. The librarians have found that the students are more engaged in research sessions when their instructor participates.

Yet. determining copyright status, articulating rights statements, and providing access while protecting rights holders can be complicated, time-consuming tasks. Investigating rights is especially daunting for archives, given their great amount of unpublished materials and orphan works. As a result, there is a strong temptation to “blanket” digital collections with restrictive access and use statements. Show moreOur subject is how the experience of Americans with a certain funding criterion, “broader impacts” (and some similar criteria) may help in efforts to turn the European concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) into a useful guide to funding Europe’s scientific and technical research. We believe this comparison may also be as enlightening for Americans concerned with revising research policy. We have organized our report around René Von Schomberg’s definition of RRI, since it seems both to cover what the European research group to which we belong is interested in and to be the only widely accepted definition of RRI. According to Von Schomberg, RRI: “… is a transparent, interactive process by which societal actors and innovators become mutually responsive to each other with a view to the (ethical) acceptability, sustainability and societal desirability of the innovation process and its marketable products (in order to allow a proper embedding of scientific and technological advances in our society).” While RRI seeks fundamental changes in the way research is conducted, Broader Impacts is more concerned with more peripheral aspects of research: widening participation of disadvantaged groups, recruiting the next generation of scientists, increasing the speed with which results are used, and so on. Nevertheless, an examination of the broadening of funding criteria over the last four decades suggests that National Science Foundation has been moving in the direction of RRI.

Show moreThis year, Illinois Tech's Institutional Repository was given it's first significant visual upgrade since its creation in 2012. The application of a new theme harmonized the repository's look with that of the university and library web sites, added more fluid and natural mobile responsiveness, and brought the repository up to contemporary standards in terms of style and functionality. This poster highlights some of the new features of the new theme, and identify some of the challenges that arose when modifying this theme for use at IIT.
