Show moreDesign Direction was Mary Henry's 1946 thesis for her graduate degree at the Institute of Design. The project, completed in collaboration with Emerson Woelffer, was based on a class for beginning students taught by Woelffer at ID. The course consisted of 18 exercises exploring the basic elements of design, each of which is represented in Henry's Design Directions. Book 1 consists of the design exercises themselves, Book 2 contains the textual component of the project. Show less

Show moreNek5000 is a highly scalable spectral element code used in a broad array of problems in computational fluid dynamics. In this thesis, we focus on applying the code to a model problem of an accelerating Couette flow, or a hydrodynamic flow between two plates, of which the top plate is accelerating and the bottom plate is stationary, and verifying the numerical methods as applied to this problem. We obtain an analytical solution to the hydrodynamic flow problem, and use this to analyze the effects of changing time step length, the size of the computational mesh, and the computational polynomial order on the accuracy and stability of Nek5000. Additionally, we discuss the addition of an applied magnetic field to the hydrodynamic Couette flow, and provide a formulation for an exact solution to this magnetohydrodynamic problem that can be used to further verify Nek5000 in a similar fashion to the hydrodynamic problem. A number of the greystone buildings visible served as Illinois Tech fraternity houses, including, at the far left of the photograph, Brown Hall, the Delta Tau Delta House, and the Phi Kappa Sigma house. At the far right of the photograph, the buildings are believed to include the Alpha Sigma Phi house, the Triangle House, and the Pi Kappa Phi house. These buildings were all demolished between ca. 1959-1963 as the block was cleared for the construction of new Illinois Tech dormitories.
