Originally constructed as a hotel for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, the 96-unit Mecca building became an apartment building after the fair. The building was acquired by Illinois Tech around 1941, and was demolished in 1952 to make way for the construction of S.R. Crown Hall. The building was also known as Mecca Apartments, and The Mecca.

At the far right of the photograph, the buildings are believed to include the Alpha Sigma Phi house, the Triangle House, and the Pi Kappa Phi house. These buildings were all demolished between ca. 1959-1963 as the block was cleared for the construction of new Illinois Tech dormitories.
